Osamu Nakajima's Fatal Crash @ Suzuka 2012 (Aftermath)

The accident that claimed the life of the experienced Japanese driver Osamu Nakajima, 54, occurred during the Super Taikyu GT Championship race. It was the supporting event to the World Touring Car Championship at their Japanese round held at Suzuka 2.244-kilometer East circuit, on Sunday, 21 October 2012.

On the 11th lap of the opening one-hour race, Osamu Nakajima lost control of his #63 Nissan Fairlady Z33 and was involved in a multiple car pile-up on the main straight. The car hit a safety barrier on the first turn and he sustained severe injuries. Nakajima was taken to a local hospital where he passed away shortly after admission. It is believed that Osamu Nakajima's car slid on an oil patch dropped by other competitors, causing him running off the road.

Osamu Nakajima was reported to be from Kyoto; it is unclear whether he was a native or a resident of that town. His family was not related to former Formula 1 drivers Satoru Nakajima and his son Kazuki Nakajima.

The Super Taikyu GT Championship race at Suzuka was the fifth round of the 2012 six-round series of endurance races for standard production vehicles, the other events being held at Fuji, Motegi, Sugo, Okayama and Autopolis.

The Suzuka weekend was overshadowed by another not-racing fatality. On Saturday, 20 October 2012 evening, a 48-year-old guest of Team SunRed Engineering fell down from the second floor of the stands, above the teams AON-Arena Motorsport and STR-Special Tuning Racing pit boxes. He didn't survive the fall; the name of the victim was not released. Team SunRed's took part in the World Touring Car Championship event with a Seat Leon driven by the Japanese star Hiroki Yoshimoto.
