Shahid Latif, mastermind behind the Pathankot attack and one of India's most wanted terrorists, was reportedly killed by unidentified assailants in Sialkot, Pakistan, on Wednesday. Shahid Latif, who was 41 years old at the time, was a confirmed member of the banned terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and considered the principal conspirator behind the Pathankot attack, which took place on January 2, 2016.

Latif was believed to have coordinated the attack from Sialkot and dispatched four JeM terrorists to Pathankot to carry out the operation. His criminal history includes an arrest in India in November 1994 on terrorism-related charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and was put to trial and eventually jailed. After serving his sentence in India, he was deported to Pakistan through the Wagah border in 2010.

Additionally, Latif was also accused in the hijacking of an Indian Airlines plane in 1999. According to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) investigation, Latif returned to Pakistan and became associated with extremist activities after his release in 2010. He was officially designated as a wanted terrorist by the Indian government.
