00:00 Back in January, in the year of our Lord, Optimus Prime 2020, Shayna Baszler was supposed
00:05 to win the Royal Rumble and go on to face Becky Lynch for the Raw Women's Championship
00:09 at WrestleMania.
00:11 It was the next chapter in a story that started at Survivor Series in 2019 and really was
00:16 the next logical step.
00:18 Put lol JK, Charlotte Flair won instead.
00:22 She faced and won against Rhea Ripley for the NXT Women's Championship at WrestleMania,
00:27 didn't really put anyone over down in the land of black and gold, lost the title without
00:32 being pinned and went back to Raw as Shoichi didn't really leave because she was still
00:37 on Raw and Smackdown while being on NXT at the same time, and before being written off
00:41 TV due to injury went straight into a feud with new Raw Women's Champion Asuka.
00:46 Meanwhile, Shayna Baszler was nowhere to be seen as she walked through her sunken dreams.
00:52 And because I'm in the seat with the clearest view and I'm hooked to the silver screen,
00:56 I have noticed the trend that Charlotte Flair + Rumble win + NXT title win + always being
01:02 on TV = bad.
01:04 A cursory glance at any YouTube video comment section where Charlotte Flair is the lead
01:08 topic would lead you to believe that Charlotte Flair is the worst thing to happen in WWE
01:14 in forever.
01:15 And really when you think about it, this isn't anything new.
01:18 Ever since Charlotte Flair came up to the main roster 5 or so years ago, she's been
01:22 labelled by internet critics and armchair bookers as the female Roman Reigns, someone
01:27 who has shoved down our throats because Vince McMahon really likes them and therefore we
01:32 have to like them as well.
01:34 That WrestleMania main event between Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey, the one that perfectly
01:38 made sense to be a singles match, had Charlotte Flair put in there because Vince McMahon wanted
01:43 the WrestleMania main event, the first women's WrestleMania main event, to have Charlotte
01:48 Flair in it.
01:49 And therefore, we don't really get a say in the matter.
01:51 It's just the way that it is.
01:52 Vince likes them, we have to like them.
01:55 But what if, and do hear me out comments, I can see you writing there, BigRuck42316,
02:00 I see you writing your comments, hear me out.
02:03 What if Charlotte Flair is actually good?
02:08 Now I could sit here and make arguments all day long, but I think to really prove a point,
02:13 I'm going to have to get scientific.
02:15 Right, okay, so to look at this scientifically, I need to...
02:24 Sorry, one second.
02:27 In order to look at this scientifically, what I've done is I've gone through the Wrestling
02:31 Observer newsletter to find star ratings for WrestleMania matches, Charlotte Flair's WrestleMania
02:36 matches, because typically it's the biggest night of the year for WWE.
02:41 It's when they put on their best matches.
02:43 It's when people put in the most effort, somewhat.
02:45 But I can't just look at Charlotte Flair's WrestleMania numbers to prove if she's actually
02:50 good scientifically.
02:51 I need to compare the data to something else.
02:55 I need to compare her to someone else.
02:57 The person that WWE themselves will tell you is one of the greatest of all time, Trish
03:02 Stratus.
03:03 Now I know what you're thinking.
03:07 I can see you starting to type already.
03:09 Why not Beth Phoenix?
03:11 AJ Lee?
03:12 Kelly Kelly, I don't know.
03:15 The simple fact is that WWE have only really just started to care about women's wrestling.
03:20 And when Beth Phoenix and AJ Lee were on top, so was Santino Marella.
03:27 Beth Phoenix didn't get a big WrestleMania title match.
03:30 AJ Lee didn't get a big one.
03:32 She had that match where she faced like 15 people, but really would you say that was
03:36 a big time WrestleMania match on the level that people like Charlotte Flair, Bayley and
03:40 Sasha Banks and Becky have had?
03:42 No, I don't think you really can.
03:45 Trish Stratus, on the other hand, had four WrestleMania matches for the title that had
03:51 storylines going into it and were given some semblance of time.
03:54 So that's the data we're going to look at.
03:57 Kicking off with WrestleMania X8 versus Jazz versus Lita minus one star.
04:06 It's not looking good.
04:10 Correct.
04:11 Versus Jazz again, this time versus also Victoria, two and a quarter stars.
04:16 So that's a bit better, right?
04:18 An absolute classic, an absolute WrestleMania classic versus Christy Hemme minus two stars.
04:28 Up next is an actual an actual WrestleMania classic and not just because of not just because
04:33 of that versus Mickie James, two and three quarter stars, although I think it should
04:39 have gotten more.
04:40 So that is Trish Stratus WrestleMania run and quick maths per average is half a star.
04:50 Let's compare that to Charlotte Flair's WrestleMania run.
04:54 Here she goes.
04:55 Whoo.
04:56 She goes there.
04:57 The women's championship match bringing back that belts versus Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks,
05:02 four whole stars.
05:03 Bayley, Sasha Banks and Nijax more losing for Sasha Banks, three and a quarter stars.
05:09 And we get an absolute belter of a match versus Asuka, four stars with a five star finish.
05:17 Nope.
05:18 Wait with a minus five star finish.
05:21 Am I right?
05:22 Am I right?
05:23 YouTube comments here.
05:25 Minus.
05:26 And then we've got the WrestleMania women's main event versus Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey.
05:31 She had no right being there, but it's still got three stars.
05:34 Then we have Rhea Ripley, four and a quarter stars.
05:38 Actually should be.
05:39 I should make reference now that some of these aren't all from Dave Meltzer because all of
05:44 the observers haven't been released.
05:45 And I think this one's from Larry Sonska.
05:48 Rest in peace, Larry Sonska.
05:50 But you get the idea.
05:51 This is, you know, an average star rating gives her a WrestleMania average rounded to
05:55 the nearest star rating.
05:58 That's important.
05:59 Three and three quarter stars, not four stars as I originally wrote.
06:06 And Adam corrected me.
06:07 I know what you're thinking.
06:08 I can see you typing.
06:10 It's not fair to compare Charlotte Flair to Trish Stratus.
06:12 After all, Charlotte Flair has never been asked to bark like a dog on TV or wrestle
06:19 in gravy or present a YouTube video wearing a suit jacket when it's really warm.
06:24 I am going to have to take this off actually.
06:26 I took my shirt and I'm on camera after all.
06:30 They care about women's wrestling here.
06:31 They don't care about it here.
06:32 I totally get that.
06:34 So what I did next is I compared Charlotte Flair's WrestleMania record to the other side
06:39 of her court.
06:40 Boom.
06:41 Becky Lynch left a gap in the middle for a reason.
06:44 You didn't see that one coming, did you?
06:46 Becky Lynch.
06:47 Let's have a look at her WrestleMania record.
06:49 Two of the big matches that she's had were against Charlotte Flair.
06:53 Both of those Charlotte Flair's, four stars, three stars.
06:55 We've already kind of covered that.
06:57 Here's one of my personal favorites.
06:59 All the Smackdown women had a little match.
07:02 A match that had more women in it than it got minutes.
07:07 Glad we got that on the main card rather than the pre-show where it would have got some
07:11 time.
07:12 Thanks Twitter.
07:13 She was then relegated to the Women's Battle Royal for another star and a half.
07:18 This year's match against Shania Baszler, three stars, when you do the maths and you
07:25 add it all up correctly, is two and a half stars compared to Charlotte Flair's three
07:32 and three quarter stars.
07:34 The science don't lie.
07:37 But I know what you're thinking.
07:39 I can see your comments.
07:40 I know what you're thinking.
07:41 It's not fair to compare Charlotte Flair's WrestleMania record with Becky Lynch's.
07:46 After all, Charlotte Flair's been given all the opportunities to have great matches.
07:50 Becky didn't get to have a match against Asuka.
07:53 She didn't get to have a match against Rhea Ripley.
07:55 She did not get the chances that Charlotte Flair was given.
07:58 So to really paint a picture, I went through their entire 2019 pay-per-view records, collated
08:04 all the star ratings that they got and came up with an average star rating for their year.
08:09 And 2019 was a big year for Becky Lynch, right?
08:12 That was the year of the man.
08:14 We had a full calendar year of her as the Raw Women's Champion, right?
08:18 So this should really paint the best picture as to whether or not Charlotte Flair is actually
08:22 good when compared to someone like Becky Lynch, who we as fans love, I for one, bloody love
08:27 Becky Lynch.
08:28 Becky Lynch's 2019 record is two and a half stars across 11 matches.
08:37 And this number, by the way, was massively brought up by that Hell in a Cell view that
08:42 she had with Sasha Banks and, ironically, Charlotte Flair.
08:47 Like her best matches last year were against Charlotte Flair, right?
08:50 Charlotte Flair's 2019 record across eight matches was three stars.
08:57 Half a star better than Becky Lynch.
08:59 So there you have it.
09:01 I have scientifically proven that Charlotte Flair is actually good.
09:07 With numbers and stars and sweating.
09:13 Science.
09:14 Charlotte Flair is actually good, according to science.
09:17 And while all that science is very good, perhaps we should look to other voices to answer this
09:22 question for a more complete argument.
09:25 Is Charlotte Flair actually good?
09:27 Charlotte Flair is incredible.
09:30 In the last several years that she's been in the company, she has done such tremendous
09:35 work.
09:36 I don't think she's beyond actually good.
09:38 I think she is legitimately one of the greatest performers WWE has right now.
09:42 I think she's by far one of the greatest female performers WWE has ever had.
09:46 She's just on a different level compared to everybody else, especially when she is in
09:51 the ring and she's showing off on the mic.
09:54 I mean, she's just incredible in backstage promos.
09:59 And I just don't think anybody really matches her level right now.
10:04 There are a lot of people that WWE pushed to the moon and there are people who like
10:08 failed to deliver.
10:09 You know, not everyone delivered 100% satisfaction, but I think Charlotte Flair delivers it every
10:15 time.
10:16 She has incredible athleticism.
10:18 Her in ring work is phenomenal.
10:21 She automatically exudes confidence when she's on the mic.
10:25 And there are just so many incredible moments that she has brought brought to women's history
10:30 in WWE.
10:32 The unfortunate issue is very rarely do those situations occur where somebody else capitalizes
10:39 off of the magnitude of stardom in which Charlotte Flair has.
10:44 But is she good?
10:45 Yeah, I think she's very good.
10:46 Huh.
10:47 I mean, that seems pretty conclusive.
10:49 If Sean Ross Sapp says it, then it has to be true.
10:52 So why do people think that Charlotte Flair is bad?
10:55 In order to answer this question with even more science, I went to the most scientific
11:00 place possible, Twitter.
11:03 I put up a poll asking if Charlotte Flair was actually good, and she won that quite
11:07 comfortably with 76.4% of the vote.
11:11 And I love this reasoning from David McKenzie, who says that everyone has their best match
11:15 against her.
11:16 That's Bret Hart levels of good.
11:19 And the replies that said she was good but they didn't like her all had the same argument.
11:23 "It's just her booking that sucks."
11:25 "She's really good, but the booking makes you hate."
11:28 "Good wrestler, massively overpushed."
11:31 "Very good performance, but being overpushed costs them."
11:34 "It's not a matter of good, it's a matter of overexposed."
11:37 "She's just overexposed.
11:38 If they didn't shove her down our throats, she'd get over a lot more in my opinion."
11:43 "Seriously best in the business, but shoved down our throats like Roman."
11:47 "Yes, as a wrestler.
11:49 Yes, as a character.
11:51 No, as an overexposed wrestler and character."
11:55 "Yeah, she's phenomenal.
11:56 Just booked very badly."
11:58 The oversaturation argument I guess stems from her post-Wrestlemania run where she was
12:03 on Raw, Smackdown and NXT seemingly every single week and also seemingly not putting
12:09 anyone over.
12:10 She beat Liv Morgan, she beat Ruby Riott, she beat Asuka twice, she beat Mia Yim in
12:15 NXT and even when she lost the title, really it was Io Shirai pinning Rhea Ripley so Charlotte's
12:20 entire NXT run was losing once and even then that was by DQ.
12:26 And it's funny when you look at those replies because no one's saying that about Banks
12:30 and Bayley and they've also been on Raw, Smackdown and NXT seemingly every week.
12:36 And part of me thinks that that comes down to the fact that Banks missed a good chunk
12:39 of 2019 and is now finally getting the heel push that we've been asking for since she
12:44 came up from NXT.
12:46 Same for Bayley whose main roster run has been full of wet fart of nothing.
12:51 Their tag act is really good and we as fans kinda wanna see them win all the gold and
12:57 be on every show.
12:59 While there are other arguments that Charlotte Flair only got her place in the company because
13:02 of her family name, she's had too many title runs etc etc they all feel a bit irrelevant.
13:08 Flair is pushed to the top because they made her a star and she's fan f***ing tastic in
13:12 the ring.
13:13 She had the best matches at both WrestleMania and NXT TakeOver In Your House this year
13:18 and that's not by accident.
13:20 But the constant pushing of Flair becomes problematic for some people when you look
13:24 at the depth of the WWE women's roster and you realise why are we only pushing Charlotte
13:29 Flair when you have Io Shirai, Toni Storm, Viper, Kay Lee Ray, Jinny, Candice LeRae,
13:35 Dakota Kai, Mia Yim, Mercedes Martinez, Tegan Nox, Charlotte Blackheart, Aria Ripley and
13:41 *cough* and that's just a casual glance at the NXT roster.
13:46 WWE has the best women's roster in the world that's not stardom.
13:50 So like that one twitter comment said, it's not a matter of whether she's good or not,
13:54 it's whether she's overexposed or not.
13:57 She's had 5 Wrestlemania programs when no one else was getting a spotlight, she was
14:02 put into that main event even though she had literally no business being there.
14:07 She was picked as Becky Lynch's avatar for Survivor Series 2018 even though we all knew
14:12 it should have been Asuka.
14:14 She beat Rhea Ripley and then didn't put anyone over in NXT.
14:17 She didn't even put anyone over when she lost the belt.
14:20 So perhaps this time off for Charlotte Flair is actually going to do her the world of good
14:25 in the eyes of WWE fans.
14:28 With her, Becky and Ronda now all out of the top picture, WWE has a chance to really build
14:34 their women's division around Sasha Banks, Asuka, Bayley, Naomi, Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan,
14:41 Shayna Baszler, Nia Jax and Bianca Belair.
14:45 All the women we've been crying to be on top of the division since 2018.
14:50 And Flair coming back feeling fresh and feuding with these new fresh faces will in turn make
14:55 her feel fresh and new too.
14:57 And then she can win all those feuds, win the Royal Rumble, main event Wrestlemania
15:01 again and we can all go back to hating her despite her having the best matches.
15:06 My favorite Charlotte Flair match.
15:12 That is difficult.
15:13 Definitely not that Lacey Evans match.
15:15 I'll have to say, oh, the match with Asuka at Wrestlemania.
15:20 Charlotte versus Becky, last woman standing match.
15:25 When she won the Divas title against Nikki Bella, that's a really good match too.
15:30 I don't think anyone really pays attention to that match.
15:33 There's a ton of them that I really like.
15:34 I think that she consistently delivers.
15:37 Rarely do I see her have a bad match.
