NewsClick's founder and Editor-in-Chief, Prabir Purkayastha, arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), has been remanded to 7-day police custody. Amit Chakravarty, NewsClick's Human Resources Head, has also been sent to police custody by the special court. Their arrests followed a Delhi police raid on the NewsClick office and residences of around 40 associated journalists and activists. Allegations of receiving funds for pro-China propaganda prompted the investigation. Digital devices and documents were seized, and 46 individuals were questioned, including notable figures like Urmilesh, Aunindyo Chakravarty, Abhisar Sharma, Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, Sohail Hashmi, Sanjay Rajoura, and D Raghunandan, who were later released. The Congress alleged that the Narendra Modi government has imposed an ""undeclared Emergency"" since 2014 which has been getting ""worse as it fears a loss in the 2024 elections"".
