The Architectural Designer Planning Climate-Friendly Buildings for a Resilient Future
Transcript
00:00 One of the reasons I love architecture and I always have is that it sits at this interesting
00:09 cross section between arts and science.
00:13 There's a super creative angle where, you know, the sky is the limit, literally.
00:19 But there's also this kind of underlying need for me, which is the building must serve whoever
00:25 is going to be dwelling in this space.
00:38 My career to this day is very heavily influenced by my childhood, my upbringing, living through
00:46 some hurricanes which directly hit or didn't directly hit in different places that I've
00:52 lived.
00:53 There's always this sense of preparation and kind of overwhelming anxiety, at least it
00:59 was for me growing up.
01:00 Just understanding that everything you have can be taken away, you know, in the snap of
01:05 a finger or in the gust of a wind.
01:13 Unfortunately, climate change is already being felt by so many of us, particularly in countries
01:20 like my own, you know, small island developing states who don't have access to huge sums
01:24 of money and resources.
01:27 A lot of my work has been driven by this idea that yes, we do need shelter, but as a community
01:33 of people, I want us to have this sense of relief almost that we don't just have to worry
01:39 about being safe.
01:40 We don't just have to worry about protecting ourselves from the next natural event or climate
01:45 change.
01:46 We spend 90% of our time as human beings in buildings.
01:51 Yes, we want beautiful spaces, but they also need to perform.
01:56 So really designing beyond this need to just survive, but designing for thriving as well.
