A police cordon remains in place at the scene of Tuesday's attack in Maple Terrace.
Police have named the victim as Emergency services attended the scene and the man, who can now be named as 54-year-old Ian Langley of Sunderland.
A man arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on police bail with conditions. Enquiries are ongoing.
