David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan got some (then) brand-new supercars: the 707-horsepower Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and Charger SRT Hellcat
Transcript
00:00 Three of the most powerful machines you can buy today
00:01 come from Dodge.
00:03 And we've got them all.
00:04 The Hellcat Twins and the Track Ready Viper SRT.
00:08 Today, Motor Trend's going to find out which one is king.
00:12 Hell no!
00:13 [TIRES SCREECHING]
00:15 This is roadkill!
00:17 [TIRES SCREECHING]
00:19 [GUNSHOTS]
00:21 [TIRES SCREECHING]
00:23 [ENGINE REVVING]
00:24 [GLASS SHATTERING]

00:33 [TIRES SCREECHING]
00:44 Can you believe it?
00:48 Roadkill is going to be sponsored by Dodge.
00:51 Yeah, like the guys who make these new Hellcat V8s
00:54 and the Viper, and they gave us these cars to play with.
00:57 Check it out.
00:58 First up is the Charger Hellcat, the most bitch
01:01 and family car ever.
01:03 The four-door with 707 horsepower and 650 pound
01:07 feet of torque, all from a supercharged 6.2 liter Hemi V8.
01:11 Then there's the Challenger Hellcat.
01:13 This car is actually a little bit slower in top speed
01:16 because of aerodynamics.
01:17 They say it'll run around 199, but we've
01:20 witnessed this car run 1080s in the quarter mile on drag
01:24 radials.
01:24 It'll run 1120s on street tires.
01:26 And again, it's got that 707 horsepower Hellcat motor.
01:31 And then at the top of the pile, the Viper GT,
01:34 Dodge's hand-built supercar.
01:37 Seriously, hand-laid carbon fiber,
01:39 hand-painted, hand-stitched interior.
01:41 We don't care about any of that because this thing
01:43 has an 8.4 liter, 645 horsepower V10,
01:49 and a claimed top speed of 206 miles an hour.
01:52 What's really funny is they also say that this Viper will
01:55 get 20 miles per gallon.
01:57 And I guarantee you, we will not find out
02:00 if that's true on this episode of Roadkill.
02:02 We're going to go wreck some junk before they figure it out.
02:17 Somebody at Dodge is going to watch the show at some point
02:20 and go, hey, wait a second.
02:22 No!
02:23 They're going to go, step out of my office.
02:25 Why?
02:25 Because you're fired.
02:26 What?
02:26 Why?
02:27 Why would you give those idiots three cars?
02:30 We're pretty far out of our league with these cars,
02:32 and so we called in some help.
02:34 Yep, our old friend, Larlos Cago from Motor Trend.
02:37 If I didn't know them, I'd say this is pretty intimidating.
02:40 There is Carlos.
02:53 Thanks for the proper Roadkill greeting.
02:55 And that's how it's done.
02:58 I almost killed the dog.
02:59 Come here!
03:00 We brought the real talent.
03:01 Of course.
03:02 I'm wondering what I'm doing at the middle of an abandoned
03:04 airport in Irvine.
03:05 I heard you're bringing the food.
03:07 This is like we want to get warmed up on the Motor Trend
03:10 head-to-head program.
03:11 The deal is we figured out Dodge is sponsoring us now.
03:14 Someone at Dodge is eventually going to watch Roadkill
03:17 and realize this is a bad idea.
03:19 So we've got to get the cars while we've got them
03:21 and derby the absolute wee out of them.
03:23 Before they figure it out.
03:24 Before they figure it out.
03:25 And we have to masquerade this as some form of head-to-head.
03:27 Exactly.
03:28 OK.
03:28 OK.
03:29 Well, your typical head-to-head uses performance tests,
03:33 subjective feedback, analyzing all the data,
03:36 somehow deciding a winner between the two cars.
03:39 Oh, no, we don't care.
03:39 That doesn't sound like Destroy All Tires.
03:40 No, that doesn't sound like Destroy All Tires.
03:43 Burnout for distance is what's going to happen right now.
03:45 OK, I'm up for that.
03:46 So there's three of us, three cars.
03:48 Rochambeau for which car you're going to take.
03:51 OK, ready?
03:52 Yeah.
03:54 Smash!
03:55 Last pick.
03:57 Ready?
03:58 God, it's like dodgeball.
03:59 Boom!
04:00 First pick.
04:00 Boom!
04:01 I'll take the Viper.
04:02 OK.
04:03 Challenger.
04:05 I'll take the station wagon.
04:07 Well, maybe you should set the pace with that.
04:10 You know, a bogey here.
04:11 We can do that.
04:13 I have no objection.
04:14 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:17 All right, right now, we are going to test
04:19 Freiberger's foot dexterity.
04:21 He's going to do a burnout for distance
04:23 with a dog and a small block Chevy
04:25 in the bed of the muscle truck.
04:27 Go for it.
04:27 Where does that rank on the all time list of--
04:39 Both bad and worse.
04:41 Because we've never done this before.
04:43 Pretty weak.
04:44 I have confidence in the Mopar's doing better than that.
04:48 Well, they're not carrying a motor in the bed either.
04:50 Well, yeah, that's for traction.
04:51 And a dog.
04:51 The dog was helpful.
04:52 For ballast, is that the standard right there?
04:55 Yeah.
04:56 Sure.
04:56 That sounds right.
04:57 All right, park this garbage and let's get
04:58 to some actual tire spin.
05:00 This point is going to be really good for you and me.
05:07 To be clear, when the tires stop spinning, you lose, right?
05:11 Yes.
05:11 There's no chance you can bank shift that thing fast enough
05:14 so that the tires spin all the way from first and second
05:16 and from second to third.
05:17 OK.
05:18 Yep.
05:18 OK.
05:19 That's what I'm saying.
05:20 We will look at the mark on the ground.
05:21 There will be a gap this long in between first and second.
05:24 Sure.
05:25 Don't lift.
05:27 Not your transmission.
05:28 I have a strategy.
05:29 Yep.
05:29 I have a strategy.
05:30 OK.
05:31 So the real secret here is I haven't told them how
05:36 to turn off traction control.
05:39 That's my big secret, big plan.
05:41 Very ineptitude dealing with modern electronics
05:44 should help me win.
05:45 Now if I can figure out how to move the seat forward.
05:51 I've written in my editorial column like four times
05:54 that I want a Hellcat.
05:56 Finally, they listened.
05:58 They're going to be sorry.
05:59 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
06:02 [ENGINE REVVING]
06:05 I am ashamed to admit it, but Carlos took me to school
06:18 on burnouts for distance.
06:19 I think this first session of the burnout drag race
06:22 is fairly definitive as to who won.
06:25 Would you mind saying that?
06:27 Oh, no.
06:27 You dominated.
06:28 I'll give it to you.
06:29 He cheated.
06:29 You dominated.
06:30 Yep.
06:31 That was completely stand up.
06:32 What's your strategy?
06:33 I left the thing in first manual and just
06:35 let it hit the rev limiter and keep in it.
06:37 And that actually gave me more distance
06:38 and shifting to second.
06:39 Now if you drag the brakes like he did,
06:41 you can go pretty much forever.
06:43 Yeah.
06:43 Well, I think we're going to have to go to the video
06:45 so that you can be wrong.
06:47 Did not drag the brakes even once.
06:48 I hole shotted it after I warmed up the tires.
06:51 I let off the brakes and let it go.
06:53 I did not use the brakes during the burnout.
06:55 So the best way to do a long burnout in a Viper,
06:58 if you're going for distance, put it in second,
07:00 red line the engine, clutch dump, and pray.
07:03 Yeah.
07:04 Now in the second competition, we're
07:06 going to do burnouts again.
07:07 But this time, it's an actual race
07:09 to see who can cross the finish line with the tires on fire
07:12 ahead of the other guys.
07:13 [MUSIC PLAYING]
07:16 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
07:23 [ENGINE REVVING]
07:26 [TIRES SCREECHING]
07:30 I beat Carlos.
07:52 Apparently, the technique in this car
07:53 is just leave it and drive and mad at it.
07:55 Because I got way more burnout distance that time.
07:58 Right, dog?
07:59 Victory donut.
08:00 [TIRES SCREECHING]
08:04 Oh, yeah.
08:04 That was quality.
08:05 Second place.
08:07 Dry burger won that one.
08:08 Absolutely.
08:09 I put it just in drive and mad at it.
08:11 Look how much farther my burnout went than on my initial run.
08:14 It's all strategy.
08:15 I know it.
08:15 I failed on the first time.
08:16 I think that might be further than your Viper burnout
08:19 in second gear.
08:20 I just got to say, the Viper has the least amount of power
08:22 here and the most amount of tire,
08:24 both in terms of size and compound.
08:27 So I'm working with a disadvantage here.
08:29 But your motor trend.
08:31 I'm hearing--
08:32 Motor trend numbers are always faster than reality.
08:34 And that's what we're seeing.
08:35 There's better drivers in reality.
08:36 I see.
08:37 Yeah.
08:37 I'll tell you what.
08:38 If you can open the hood of the Viper in less than 30 seconds,
08:41 I'll just trade you cars.
08:43 Does it open forwards or backwards?
08:44 I don't think about Vipers.
08:46 Is there a button inside?
08:47 He is an expert working with cars.
08:50 He built the Blast Wagon.
08:51 He should know how to do this.
08:53 I don't know.
08:54 How's it open?
08:54 It's the engine in the back.
08:58 That's what you got going on here.
09:00 It's exactly what it is.
09:02 I don't know.
09:02 How's it open?
09:03 If you ever see a Viper parking lot
09:07 and you want to screw the owner, you take that lever.
09:10 Wow.
09:10 And walk away?
09:11 Don't.
09:12 So as the technical advisor motor trend representative here,
09:17 I feel like we should talk about what
09:19 we've learned in the past test.
09:20 What I've learned is there's still tread on those tires.
09:24 We need to devise a much more efficient test
09:26 at destroying them.
09:27 We run a handling test, the figure eight.
09:29 You guys won't care about that at all
09:30 because we actually measure G-forces and lap times
09:33 and stuff.
09:33 What you guys probably care about is drifting.
09:35 It's smoke.
09:36 So we brought in a professional drifter, Tony.
09:38 Why don't you come on in?
09:39 What's up, guys?
09:40 What's happening?
09:41 He's going to teach us what to do.
09:42 We're looking to destroy a bunch of tires
09:44 recklessly as fast as possible, right?
09:46 That's sort of the goal.
09:46 Perfect.
09:47 Drifting is perfect for that.
09:48 Don't kill in a sentence.
09:49 I'm going to show you guys some tips,
09:50 and we'll throw you through a short course.
09:52 You'll get three turns each, and I will judge you
09:55 on your best single run.
09:57 We'll find a winner.
09:57 You're the judge?
09:58 I'm the judge, also.
09:59 You take cash?
10:00 No.
10:01 I do take cards.
10:02 I do take cards.
10:03 Oh, random tools.
10:04 So we're all--
10:04 Tools are good.
10:05 Tires need tires.
10:06 Tools are good, yeah.
10:06 We always need tires.
10:07 That's perfect.
10:08 So charger?
10:09 Yeah, you guys want to hop in, and I'll show you how it goes?
10:11 Dog, come here.
10:14 All right, so you want to use weight transfer
10:17 and the throttle, this thing.
10:19 You get the drift going, so you're going to go like this.
10:21 [ENGINE REVVING]
10:25 Back and front.
10:26 [ENGINE REVVING]
10:29 [MUSIC PLAYING]
10:31 [LAUGHTER]
10:33 So it's just one F?
10:35 So at the beginning, when you said,
10:37 so you're going to go like this, what did you actually do?
10:39 You turn the wheel so you get the suspension loaded one way,
10:42 and then cut it back and hammer on the gas
10:44 to get it to start to rotate.
10:46 You're going to roll up.
10:47 You're going to turn to the right
10:48 to put the weight on the outside, and then cut it back.
10:51 [ENGINE REVVING]
10:52 Steer it on the throttle.
10:53 Let it rotate back.
10:54 Let the wheel spin.
10:55 [ENGINE REVVING]
10:59 Cool.
11:03 Cool.
11:04 That was fun.
11:04 Piece of cake.
11:05 All right, your job.
11:06 [LAUGHTER]
11:07 That was pretty good.
11:08 The first guy out is going to be the first chump,
11:11 so naturally, I put my hand up for that,
11:13 and I'm going to go out in the Challenger.
11:15 Now, I proved the Challenger is capable of the ultimate burnout,
11:18 and I'm probably not going to show a whole lot of skill
11:21 in drifting, but I am going to give you a lot of tire smoke.
11:24 [MUSIC PLAYING]
11:26 [ENGINE REVVING]
11:29 Aggressive.
11:30 No weight transfer here.
11:31 Aggressive.
11:31 [ENGINE REVVING]
11:33 [CHEERING]
11:35 Bye-bye.
11:36 [LAUGHTER]
11:40 Well, he's got that forward 280 down.
11:42 [ENGINE REVVING]
11:45 So what do we give for taking out cones?
11:52 Is that an automatic DNF?
11:53 No, but let's have a sliding scale.
11:57 We saw that.
11:57 We're going to call that one.
11:58 Not going to improve this time.
11:59 Yeah.
12:00 Not going to.
12:00 Let's do better than that.
12:01 We should set the cone for him.
12:03 [ENGINE REVVING]
12:04 I don't think he cares, because he's probably
12:06 going to take him out again.
12:07 [ENGINE REVVING]
12:10 [LAUGHTER]
12:11 That weight transfer.
12:12 [CHEERING]
12:14 Wow.
12:15 All of them.
12:16 All of them.
12:16 Wow.
12:17 He knows we're not supposed to hit all the cones, right?
12:20 That's--
12:21 I give that a 7 out of 50.
12:24 Would you like to re-establish some cones?
12:26 So the goal isn't to hit the cones.
12:29 Oh, I thought we were supposed to wipe them all out.
12:31 You did that very well.
12:33 You want to go around them.
12:34 Try again, sir.
12:35 This time will be better, I'm sure.
12:37 So easy for you to talk now.
12:39 I know.
12:39 [LAUGHTER]
12:40 It's amazing.
12:41 Freiburger's last run.
12:42 [ENGINE REVVING]
12:44 Here we go.
12:45 Come on.
12:46 You can do it.
12:47 Good start.
12:48 [ENGINE REVVING]
12:50 Hey.
12:52 Yeah.
12:53 Not as much as I wanted.
12:54 Not too bad.
12:55 [ENGINE REVVING]
12:59 That's not going to go well.
13:01 I wanted to like it.
13:02 I did.
13:03 [ENGINE REVVING]
13:05 [ENGINE REVVING]
13:08 [CHEERING]
13:11 Now he's not even trying.
13:12 I really wanted to like it.
13:13 I thought, hey, you made it halfway through.
13:15 This is good.
13:16 It's pretty good.
13:18 At some point, you just revert to having fun.
13:21 You just go to full high school mode.
13:23 You had it in the first half.
13:24 That looked good.
13:25 That run was better than the first two.
13:28 Combined.
13:28 Yes.
13:29 No way.
13:30 Which is saying something.
13:31 The last run was best, for sure, because you were in a proper
13:34 drift through this turn.
13:36 If you'd have held that a little better,
13:38 you'd basically been in pretty good shape.
13:40 Drifting.
13:40 Drifting.
13:41 You would have been drifting.
13:42 Almost.
13:43 Carlos may have shown us up on the burnout contest in the Viper,
13:47 but all of a sudden, he's realizing his flaw,
13:49 because this car is super tail happy.
13:52 And I guarantee you he's going through this course bass
13:55 acrwards.
13:56 I not so secretly want him to fail.
13:58 10 years of motor trend testing right here.
14:00 [ENGINE REVVING]
14:03 [TIRES SCREECHING]
14:06 4, 5, 6 cones.
14:07 He's going to keep that one.
14:08 That's pretty good.
14:09 I suppose I should probably pick those up,
14:11 since he did it for me.
14:13 This part here was--
14:14 It was impressive.
14:14 It was solid.
14:15 Right here.
14:16 Yeah, right here.
14:17 Right up until the part where he had to make the tires spin.
14:20 Yeah.
14:20 It looked pretty good.
14:21 I would say the first eighth of a second looked solid.
14:24 Yeah.
14:25 All right.
14:26 Second shot.
14:28 Oh, boy.
14:28 [TIRES SCREECHING]
14:31 [TIRES SCREECHING]
14:33 That's a difficult car.
14:34 Yeah.
14:35 Yeah.
14:35 It's tough.
14:36 He initiated it super early, and I thought,
14:39 maybe that's the key.
14:41 But then, backwards.
14:44 I didn't finish.
14:45 Does that count?
14:46 It was a half gainer.
14:47 Is that a full run?
14:48 Yeah.
14:49 Not exactly.
14:49 You want to take 4, 5.
14:52 I don't think any of that's going to help.
14:54 I don't envy his car choice.
14:56 No.
14:57 The Rochambeau, backfiring on him right now.
14:59 I want to do more.
15:00 Just three runs is impossible to perfect.
15:02 Well, especially when you consider our lack of talent.
15:05 Right.
15:05 I mean, let's be honest.
15:06 That's what I'm saying.
15:07 [TIRES SCREECHING]
15:11 There's the anger.
15:24 You want to go again?
15:25 Sure.
15:26 OK.
15:26 [TIRES SCREECHING]
15:30 Oh, my god.
15:31 That car is so difficult to drive.
15:33 [TIRES SCREECHING]
15:37 [TIRES SCREECHING]
15:40 Not so much.
15:44 I like the way he picked it right up there.
15:47 I like his enthusiasm.
15:48 Yep.
15:48 [TIRES SCREECHING]
15:52 I give that a little bit of credit.
15:54 That was a good set of contact.
15:55 That was pretty nice.
15:57 Overall, though, you feel inferior now?
16:02 Yes.
16:03 Good.
16:03 To the car.
16:04 Not to you guys.
16:04 I feel way better.
16:05 Oh, yeah.
16:05 Good point.
16:06 So it wasn't the most orthodox pass,
16:10 but I feel the second drift, or the first drift going that way--
16:13 That was quality.
16:14 --was good.
16:14 Yeah.
16:15 Was better than all the other ones so far.
16:16 Right.
16:17 OK.
16:18 We weren't really watching because your run was over
16:20 at that point, though.
16:21 Yeah.
16:21 That's when we have all the cameras.
16:22 Remember how I did a burnout like four car lengths past yours
16:25 and it didn't matter because it was off camera?
16:28 Kind of the same thing.
16:29 Fair.
16:29 This took more skill, though.
16:31 Ah.
16:31 [TIRES SCREECHING]
16:34 [TIRES SCREECHING]
16:38 That car's awesome.
16:41 Last up is our smack talker, Mike Finnegan.
16:44 And we know he's got some chops when it comes
16:46 to hanging stuff sideways.
16:47 And he's got an advantage because the Charger has
16:50 the longest wheelbase of the bunch.
16:52 It's 120.2 inches, which is four inches longer
16:55 than the Challenger.
16:57 He's going to have a fun time.
16:58 If I'm going to attempt to be drifting,
17:00 might as well do it with air conditioning on
17:02 because for once on Roadkill, I have it.
17:04 Ha ha.
17:05 What do you think, weeds or no weeds?
17:07 Possible.
17:07 Possible?
17:08 Possible weeds?
17:09 Always possible.
17:10 [ENGINE REVVING]
17:12 Shift, shift.
17:13 You got to put it in a different gear than that.
17:14 You need a second, buddy.
17:15 [TIRES SCREECHING]
17:19 [TIRES SCREECHING]
17:22 OK, OK.
17:24 All right.
17:24 All right.
17:25 Not bad.
17:27 No, no, no.
17:29 This is looking familiar.
17:30 I know what this looks like from the driver's seat.
17:33 [TIRES SCREECHING]
17:35 It does great, don't it?
17:37 [TIRES SCREECHING]
17:40 [TIRES SCREECHING]
17:43 [LAUGHTER]
17:44 So--
17:45 Rankin?
17:46 I felt pretty good.
17:48 He looked controlled.
17:49 He didn't complete the course, but he
17:51 looked very controlled throughout the whole thing.
17:53 And if he could kind of put that last turn together,
17:55 I think you guys are in trouble.
17:56 You guys are in trouble.
17:57 In the transition.
17:58 It wasn't sliding in here, though.
17:59 He was sliding.
18:00 He's got to get that figured out, too.
18:01 He's got to get that figured out, too.
18:03 That doesn't count.
18:05 I just learned something.
18:06 What's that?
18:07 Forward with the shifter.
18:09 That's not the up shift.
18:10 You got paddles.
18:10 You got paddles.
18:11 I don't know.
18:12 I'm following his advice.
18:13 Let go of the wheel and let it spin.
18:15 Can't paddle.
18:15 Well, you should be in second by there.
18:17 Oh, I took off in second.
18:19 And then I went-- and then it tapped out in second,
18:22 and I tried to go into third.
18:23 But I, you know, I pushed it forward.
18:25 It's backwards.
18:26 Operator error.
18:26 Yeah.
18:27 Run two.
18:28 Yeah, this is fun.
18:29 [ENGINE REVVING]
18:31 That feels right.
18:32 These cars are one of the greatest ways to destroy tires.
18:42 These are good cars.
18:43 Yeah, these are tire trucking machines.
18:45 [ENGINE REVVING]
18:48 Uh-oh.
18:49 Uh-oh.
18:50 [TIRES SCREECHING]
18:51 Oh, fuck.
18:52 [TIRES SCREECHING]
18:55 Oh.
18:56 Oh.
18:56 Tire's done.
19:07 He's going to make it hard for himself now.
19:08 Tire's done.
19:09 Yeah.
19:10 I done ruined the tires.
19:12 Yeah, your tire's done.
19:14 Yeah, I noticed.
19:17 I should get points for those tires.
19:19 Well, they're dead.
19:20 What do you think caused it?
19:22 That's not hot, is it, Carlos?
19:23 Not at all.
19:23 [LAUGHTER]
19:25 I know what caused it.
19:26 It's an overabundance of talent.
19:27 That's--
19:28 You're right.
19:28 That's what that is.
19:29 I've seen this a bunch.
19:30 I know, right?
19:30 Yeah.
19:31 Absolutely.
19:31 They're both done.
19:32 Are they?
19:32 Yeah.
19:33 Go change it.
19:33 [MUSIC PLAYING]
19:36 [ENGINE REVVING]
19:37 [MUSIC PLAYING]
19:39 [ENGINE REVVING]
19:40 [MUSIC PLAYING]
19:41 [ENGINE REVVING]
19:42 [ENGINE REVVING]
19:43 Here we go.
19:44 [TIRES SCREECHING]
19:48 Oh.
19:48 [TIRES SCREECHING]
19:49 [TIRES SCREECHING]
19:52 Into the woods.
19:53 Hit the brakes.
19:54 Into the woods.
19:54 [LAUGHTER]
19:57 He tried.
19:57 He was aggressive on entry, but I feel like he
20:00 kind of went through the turns.
20:02 I'm just going to try that again.
20:04 That was his third attempt.
20:05 [ENGINE REVVING]
20:08 Something tells me, though, there's nothing stopping him.
20:12 God, it sounds good.
20:14 Yeah, blower.
20:14 [TIRES SCREECHING]
20:18 Get it.
20:18 Get flipping.
20:19 Two months-- oh, oh, oh.
20:20 Into the woods.
20:23 Yeah.
20:24 Into the port-a-potty.
20:25 [TIRES SCREECHING]
20:27 There's a lot of understeer there.
20:28 Yeah.
20:29 Well?
20:30 Like 10 more goes at it.
20:33 10 more?
20:34 Yeah, 10?
20:35 In a row.
20:35 Yeah.
20:36 Do we all get that?
20:37 You know, I'd say the same thing about the Viper.
20:39 Yeah, 10 more attempts on the Viper, I might be on it.
20:41 2030.
20:41 2030.
20:42 Well, you've got to give us our overall ranking, though.
20:44 OK.
20:45 Yep.
20:45 I would say it's close.
20:47 [LAUGHTER]
20:48 Pretty close.
20:49 Political.
20:49 He wants to come back on the show.
20:51 One and two are pretty close.
20:52 Last place for sure, Carlos.
20:54 Oh!
20:55 [LAUGHTER]
20:55 Done.
20:56 Last.
20:56 Even though he was in the Viper.
20:58 Absolutely.
20:58 OK.
20:59 Doesn't matter.
20:59 I don't want to see it.
21:00 That's it.
21:01 [LAUGHTER]
21:01 I can't score you on it.
21:02 Oh, you can't watch it.
21:03 OK.
21:04 And I would say one, and right behind him, zero.
21:07 No, I would say he definitely carried the first turn
21:09 and had the hope of making that turn.
21:11 Absolutely.
21:11 You didn't do it.
21:13 I felt like on the last run, I was like, it's working.
21:16 It's working.
21:16 And then, oh, wow.
21:18 Yeah.
21:18 You suck.
21:20 Yep.
21:20 Well, that's kind of what we would do for testing
21:23 if we were kind of doing road kills, bastardization,
21:25 and motor trend tests.
21:27 We've determined that I can do the longest burnouts in a Viper.
21:32 You can do the fastest burnouts in a Challenger.
21:35 I still got more distance.
21:36 It just happened to be after the competition.
21:38 After the competition was over.
21:39 Right.
21:39 If we were going by that, I'd have the best drift, too.
21:41 But no, that goes to this guy.
21:43 We're evaluating poor drifting skills.
21:46 But that's kind of it.
21:47 We could dyno the cars, but we don't have a dyno here.
21:50 So that's kind of our day.
21:51 We can strap them down.
21:52 [MUSIC PLAYING]
21:56 3, 2, 1, action.
22:16 [ENGINE REVVING]
22:19 [TIRES SCREECHING]
22:49 Yeah!
22:50 Ha ha!
22:51 Oh my god.
22:54 Oh!
22:55 That's a lot of smoke.
22:57 [LAUGHTER]
23:00 Wow!
23:01 [LAUGHTER]
23:03 Wow!
23:04 Look at that!
23:05 That's insane!
23:07 Holy crap!
23:09 Look at this!
23:10 Oh, wow.
23:10 It feels like--
23:12 It feels like a drag strip.
23:13 Look at that!
23:14 Look what we just did!
23:15 Look at the smoke!
23:16 I didn't move that much.
23:17 Look, actually, like, curved.
23:18 I'm leaving.
23:19 So you pulled me away, and then I started
23:21 pulling both of you this way.
23:22 Yeah.
23:23 And the cars didn't break.
23:24 That's amazing right there.
23:25 That's a sweet tie job on our part.
23:27 I feel like I smoked a carton of menthols.
23:30 No one's ever done that before.
23:31 Never.
23:32 Set in records, once again on "Roadkill."
23:35 As a team, Larlos, Homeless Dave, and I
23:38 had a pretty damn good day.
23:39 We successfully destroyed 12 Pirelli tires,
23:42 and we learned that Freiburger is
23:44 pretty good behind the wheel.
23:45 All that's left to do now is pack up,
23:47 find some more tires, and hit the road
23:49 for our next destination.
23:51 [MUSIC PLAYING]
23:54 OK.
23:58 You cannot drive this car in flip-flops.
24:02 What are you doing?
24:03 Sandal?
24:03 [WHISTLING]
24:04 So we're headed out to the desert
24:06 to do some more tests on the Hellcat, the Hellcat,
24:08 and the Viper when Carlos calls me,
24:10 because he's borrowed the ramp truck and the Gremlin
24:12 for an episode of "Ignition," even though I told him not to,
24:15 because it would break down.
24:17 And as usual, we've got to go rescue him.
24:19 [PHONE RINGING]
24:20 Mike?
24:21 I told you so.
24:23 Yeah, you did.
24:24 You were 100% right.
24:25 We will fix this for you, because this is your problem,
24:27 not ours.
24:28 I appreciate you doing this favor for me.
24:32 What had happened to the truck is
24:33 that it has two ground straps, and we disconnect the battery
24:36 so that it doesn't drain it when it's in storage,
24:38 and somebody only hooked up the positive side.
24:41 And so the little tiny body ground strap
24:43 ended up burning through, completely leaving
24:45 him stranded and helpless.
24:48 It turns out it was a double whammy.
24:49 Not only was the ground cable fried in half,
24:52 but the truck was out of gas.
24:53 So after we rewire the battery, I
24:55 have to come back again to bring Carlos' gas.
24:58 And then I've got to break into the truck,
25:00 because the key for the gas cap is gone.
25:03 Why?
25:04 Because roadkill.
25:05 Now, you might ask yourself, what
25:11 could they do that's bigger and badder than a three-way tug
25:14 of war with a Hellcat, a Hellcat, and a Viper?
25:17 Our next guest is going to be Fred Williams from Dirt
25:20 Every Day.
25:21 So just think what we're probably going
25:23 to do next with these cars.
25:24 I hear we're racing.
25:25 That's why I brought my helmet.
25:26 Did you bring enough helmets for everyone?
25:28 No.
25:28 My mom only got me one helmet.
25:29 I don't have enough to share today.
25:31 Have you ever even driven 700 horsepower before?
25:34 My Toyota has 717 gears.
25:36 Does that count?
25:37 That's close.
25:37 All right.
25:38 Perfect.
25:38 So what is the plan?
25:40 All right, so we have a track designed for motorcycles.
25:42 We're going to take all three of these cars on them.
25:44 We're all going to ride together in each car,
25:46 including the Viper.
25:47 And right now, we need a Rochambeau
25:49 for who's piloting what.
25:50 Tied up.
25:53 Ready?
25:56 Good minds think alike.
25:59 OK, now you guys go, and I'm last.
26:01 OK.
26:02 You ready, sir?
26:03 Yes.
26:03 You win.
26:07 Oh, I'm taking the Challenger, because we've
26:09 got semi-decent ground clearance compared to that.
26:13 And I don't want to be the guy to ride under the hatch that.
26:16 And you would take?
26:18 I will take this if I get shotgun in that.
26:21 In a rare moment of failure, I lost the Rochambeau
26:25 and was the last guy to pick a car.
26:26 But I didn't want to drive the Viper,
26:28 so watch me absolutely baffle Fred into taking that car.
26:31 So we know one of us is going to take this, right?
26:34 Right.
26:35 So we will Rochambeau.
26:37 The winner takes shotgun in this.
26:38 The loser drives this.
26:40 OK.
26:41 Right?
26:43 Ah!
26:45 So that means I got shotgun.
26:46 And so I'm driving that.
26:48 Right.
26:48 Which means I'm taking the Charger.
26:50 Which means I'm under the hat.
26:52 The viewership has followed this down to a T.
26:54 They know exactly what's going to happen.
26:56 Let's just do it.
26:57 All right.
26:57 Let's tie up dogs and race.
26:58 I am first up in the Charger and ready
27:08 to prove this is the new ultimate off-road muscle car.
27:12 You're great at this.
27:37 I love this job.
27:39 Yeah!
27:39 Nice shortcut.
27:51 It's a good hill climb right here.
27:58 You're doing great.
28:06 [INAUDIBLE]
28:07 Oh, big berm.
28:13 Big berm.
28:14 Big berm.
28:15 Oh!
28:16 [LAUGHTER]
28:17 Oh!
28:20 Dude, you ran over the top of the berm.
28:26 I know!
28:27 [INAUDIBLE]
28:28 [LAUGHTER]
28:29 We bottomed out.
28:34 That's for sure.
28:35 [LAUGHTER]
28:36 Damage report.
28:46 Damage report?
28:47 Damage report.
28:48 This side is a win, aside from that rocker panel.
28:51 Oops.
28:51 Oops!
28:53 I might have dented that a little bit.
28:54 That'll totally bump out.
28:55 That's a snap back in.
28:56 Oh, look.
28:57 It's fixed.
28:58 No one will never know.
28:59 Dodge will not know.
29:00 Just like on the Dukes of Hazzard,
29:02 Dodge Charger, invincible.
29:04 Yeah, completely.
29:05 Look at that.
29:06 We just went super cross, and the car is still fine.
29:09 Wait.
29:10 Wait.
29:12 There we go.
29:14 Handled.
29:16 Gotcha.
29:18 I don't know.
29:18 We're missing a piece.
29:19 Ooh.
29:20 I think it's OK.
29:22 You know what?
29:23 I used to say that the B-Body GM was the ultimate off-road vehicle
29:26 platform, but now I've driven this.
29:28 Well, yeah, it didn't have 700 horsepower, so--
29:30 That's probably the problem.
29:32 Wow.
29:32 Can we jump it again?
29:33 Let's go drive the Challenger.
29:34 I want to jump it.
29:34 Let's go jump something else.
29:36 Shotgun and Challenger.
29:37 I win.
29:40 Next up is Finnegan and the Challenger.
29:42 And I don't really know what's going to happen on the Comparo of the two cars
29:44 here.
29:45 The Challenger is a little bit lighter, but I
29:47 like the longer wheel base on the Charger for what we're doing here.
29:50 But one thing's for sure.
29:51 Finnegan is going to go all out.
29:54 All right, everybody ready?
29:55 You have a reputation to uphold.
29:57 [ENGINE REVVING]
29:59 That happened to me, too.
30:03 Oh, so did that.
30:04 [LAUGHTER]
30:07 Oh, boy.
30:10 Oh, boy.
30:11 Oh!
30:13 Back up there.
30:16 Brake, brake, brake, brake.
30:17 Get it, get it, get it, get it.
30:19 Oh!
30:21 That tire came off the rim.
30:23 We've got to complete the stage.
30:25 It doesn't smell good.
30:27 How did I get the car with the bunk tires?
30:29 Oh, right.
30:30 That's what happened.
30:32 We might have to change that and let you go again.
30:34 Do you smell the tire burning from spinning the wheel inside it?
30:38 It's smoking right there.
30:39 Yeah, why don't you go ahead and touch that?
30:41 Let me get a judge's ruling.
30:42 Are we changing it or keeping going?
30:44 I'm going to say it's much more fun to change it.
30:46 Change it.
30:47 All right.
30:48 Way more fun to change it.
30:49 Let's go change it.
30:50 [MUSIC PLAYING]
30:52 Fueling up.
30:54 Fueling up.
30:56 [ENGINE REVVING]
30:58 Oh, yeah.
31:00 [ENGINE REVVING]
31:03 Oh!
31:05 [ENGINE REVVING]
31:07 Oh, my god.
31:08 Oh!
31:09 I heard Fred Ayrton that time.
31:11 It sounded like cracking.
31:13 Oh!
31:14 [ENGINE REVVING]
31:15 Oh!
31:16 [LAUGHTER]
31:17 Oh!
31:18 Ooh, good one there.
31:20 Nice.
31:21 See, this is hard to sweep through.
31:23 [ENGINE REVVING]
31:27 Table top!
31:28 Oh!
31:29 [LAUGHTER]
31:31 [ENGINE REVVING]
31:33 Oh, nice.
31:34 Oh!
31:35 Oh!
31:36 I three-wheeled big time.
31:38 Oh!
31:39 I can't see.
31:40 [ENGINE REVVING]
31:42 Oh!
31:43 Oh!
31:44 Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go!
31:47 Oh, this could be good.
31:49 Oh!
31:50 [LAUGHTER]
31:53 Nice slide.
31:54 Way better than mine.
31:56 That was quality.
31:57 [ENGINE REVVING]
31:58 [LAUGHTER]
32:00 How much Challenger is left?
32:02 It's a two-door, so there's half as much to ruin.
32:05 I fear--
32:06 Oh, this side's a little buckled.
32:08 Oh!
32:09 A little buckled.
32:10 You might have did a little damage to the front valance.
32:13 Oh, she's on a diet.
32:14 Apparently, it's not designed to stuff directly
32:16 into a berm at 50 miles an hour.
32:18 I think it's a better approach angle.
32:20 It's eating itself.
32:21 It's like it's hungry.
32:22 Other than that, I think we're good.
32:24 Most of this stuff's still here.
32:25 Can we just zoos it back together?
32:26 Yeah, a little super glue, and a little--
32:28 Oh, look at that.
32:29 Get some zip ties.
32:30 They're not going to even notice that.
32:31 Exactly.
32:32 They'll never see.
32:33 That will--
32:34 [LAUGHTER]
32:36 OK, that's not going to buff out.
32:37 So what do you want to do?
32:38 We got to make you cram into the hatch?
32:40 I think that's what we agreed on, right?
32:42 Yeah.
32:43 Yeah.
32:44 Does this even fit golf clubs?
32:45 It's like a Jeep that's four inches off the ground.
32:47 OK.
32:48 Just keep in mind, this is carbon fiber.
32:50 Don't break it.
32:51 Wait a minute.
32:52 Wait a minute.
32:53 Wait a minute.
32:54 Wait a minute.
32:55 That's not working.
32:56 No, come on.
32:57 I've seen Fred drive.
32:58 I'm not riding back there.
32:59 I'm going to take still pictures, because someone's
33:01 going to want to remember you.
33:02 It's basically a Jeep, Fred.
33:04 [MUSIC PLAYING]
33:07 Next up is Fred in the Viper, and man, is he screwed.
33:11 This is the lowest car.
33:12 It's the most expensive car.
33:14 It's the lightest car.
33:16 That's why we're letting him drive it.
33:19 Fred?
33:20 Yes?
33:21 This is a $90,000 car.
33:23 Enjoy yourself.
33:24 [ENGINE REVVING]
33:27 I feel totally safe now.
33:34 Oh my god.
33:36 Hang on.
33:37 Clutch it.
33:38 Clutch it.
33:39 Oh, shit.
33:40 Oh my god.
33:44 If the front of the car is still there,
33:46 I'll be totally surprised.
33:47 You got this.
33:48 Yeah.
33:52 [LAUGHTER]
33:55 Oh, the camera guy.
34:03 Sorry, camera guy.
34:05 Sorry about that.
34:08 Oh my god, we're going to die.
34:10 There we go.
34:18 Brake on the left.
34:19 Use it.
34:20 Oh.
34:21 [LAUGHTER]
34:24 Oh my god.
34:30 Got it.
34:30 I got it.
34:31 You are so in shape.
34:32 You're so beautiful.
34:34 Yeah, drift it.
34:35 Now you're drifting.
34:36 Oh, shit.
34:38 Oh.
34:40 Hang on.
34:41 Hit it.
34:42 Oh.
34:43 Use it.
34:44 Don't get stuck.
34:47 Reverse.
34:49 There we go.
34:50 Good save.
34:51 Good save.
34:52 [LAUGHTER]
34:55 Oh, shit.
35:11 Sandy.
35:12 [LAUGHTER]
35:16 [ENGINE REVVING]
35:19 Oh, I should laugh.
35:24 Because every time I do, I eat dirt.
35:26 I have a fine Corinthian leather.
35:28 Not so supple anymore.
35:30 Oh, it's perfect.
35:32 It's finally broken in.
35:34 You sold me on the Viper.
35:36 Well, let's see if you own it.
35:37 You might own this piece.
35:39 This thing took a beating better than the other cars.
35:41 You stuffed that nose over there.
35:44 I'm in bad.
35:45 And it's fine.
35:46 It's a Viper.
35:47 Road tested.
35:48 I told you it's just like a Jeep.
35:49 Roadkill approved right here.
35:50 It is just like a Jeep.
35:51 A Jeep with very little clearance.
35:52 Good job, Dodge.
35:53 I'm not paying for that detail job.
35:56 There might be a little dirt inside.
35:58 Oh, yeah.
35:59 Look at that seat.
36:00 The bucket seat is a bucket of sand.
36:02 You could start a garden with all the dirt that's
36:04 inside that car right now.
36:06 Can I take it home?
36:08 Yeah.
36:09 See ya.
36:10 [ENGINE REVVING]
36:14 I believe Fred is unfamiliar with the concept of Rev Limiter.
36:18 I think he just enjoys it more than most.
36:20 Didn't he do this to us in the sand episode, too?
36:22 Yeah.
36:23 There's more rocks this time, though.
36:24 Coming out of the dirt, there really is no winner, except us, Roadkill.
36:29 It's unbelievable to us that Dodge is actually letting us do this.
36:33 And you might look at this episode and go, why would they get these cars
36:37 and do nothing but trash them?
36:38 Well, basically, it's because they let us.
36:41 It's because we can.
36:42 I look at a lot of old movies and I ask, why did they just crash that '69 Charger?
36:47 Why are they rolling over that Hemi Cuda?
36:49 Well, it's because when those movies were new, those cars were new.
36:52 And it didn't matter that much.
36:54 And that's kind of the deal here.
36:55 You know what?
36:56 Dodge will make more.
36:57 So there's really only one thing left to ask.
37:01 What does a Hellcat engine look like in a Roadkill car?
37:05 [ENGINE REVVING]
37:09 [MUSIC PLAYING]
37:12 Whoa!
37:21 [LAUGHTER]
37:24 You're great at this.
37:26 That's on the side of the car.
37:27 It is.
37:28 [LAUGHTER]
37:29 Here you go.
37:29 I'll take that.
37:30 All right.
37:31 [LAUGHTER]
37:33 [ENGINE REVVING]
37:37 Nice shortcut.
37:38 [LAUGHTER]
37:39 Get ready.
37:40 [LAUGHTER]
37:42 That was good.
37:43 That was very good.
37:45 That wasn't fast, but it was good.
37:47 No, no.
37:48 It was good.
37:50 [ENGINE REVVING]
37:51 [LAUGHTER]
37:54 [LAUGHTER]
37:56 Dude, you ran over the top of the berm.
37:58 I know.
37:58 I win, right?
37:59 [LAUGHTER]
38:00 That was pretty damn good.
38:01 [LAUGHTER]
38:04 That was awesome.
38:06 You literally got all the way on top and rode across it.
38:09 I know.
38:09 I was like, I can't stop now.
38:11 Seven horsepower saved you there.
38:13 [LAUGHTER]
38:13 Landed.
38:14 [ENGINE REVVING]
38:17 Oh, nice.
38:18 Oh!
38:19 Wow.
38:20 It three-wheeled big time.
38:22 Wow.
38:23 I can't see.
38:25 And--
38:26 Oh!
38:27 [LAUGHTER]
38:30 I don't think they could see that through the dirt,
38:34 but you three-wheeled it big.
38:36 I still can't see.
38:37 Oh.
38:37 [LAUGHTER]
38:40 Wow.
38:41 [LAUGHTER]
38:44 I love this job.
38:46 The title of this is going to be "Three Idiots Giggling."
38:49 We spread some dirt every day, and show us how it's done.
38:52 [MUSIC PLAYING]
38:55 [LAUGHTER]
38:58 [MUSIC PLAYING]
39:01 (upbeat music)
39:04 (upbeat music)
