00:00 Hi guys, this is Johnny Hunkins with Mopar Muscle Magazine and we are here with the 2015
00:20 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack.
00:23 This car has got a brand new 392 cubic inch Hemi in the mainline of cars in Dodge's line
00:29 this year and that's new because in the past you could only get this engine in the SRT
00:34 lineup.
00:35 Now anybody can go into any Dodge dealership and buy this.
00:40 Let's take a look under the hood.
00:42 For 2015 Dodge has given the Scat Pack 485 horsepower.
00:48 Now compared to last year's SRT model which was 470 to 475 horsepower depending on the
00:55 model that you got, that's another 10 or 15 horsepower under the hood.
01:03 Now that big Hemi is attached to Chrysler's brand new 8 speed torque flight automatic
01:07 transmission and on this particular model you've got paddle shifters on the steering
01:13 wheel.
01:14 The left paddle is for up shifting, right one is for down shifting and that sure makes
01:20 things a whole lot of fun on the street.
01:22 You know a lot of people who don't like to have the clutch in traffic, well they can
01:26 have just as much fun shifting gears with the paddle shifter and this thing is fast.
01:31 Chrysler says that when you're at full throttle that the shifts happen as quickly as 160 milliseconds.
01:38 That is lightning quick.
01:42 Now the baseline Scat Pack that we're driving has a dynamite look and even in base form
01:47 you're going to get these big 20 inch rollers here.
01:51 Brembo brake equipment front and rear, you've got four piston calipers and 20 inches of
02:01 rubber, a lot of grip with this car.
02:05 For 2015 Dodge has endowed its new Challenger Scat Pack with a lot of visual cues from the
02:12 1971 Challenger model.
02:14 One of the most obvious ones is the twin loop grill here which has a silver painted surround
02:22 there.
02:24 On the back, let's go back here, you can see they changed the rear tail light configuration.
02:29 Instead of the solid bar across the back, they now have a blacked out valance with two
02:34 separate pods and that's exactly reminiscent of the 71.
02:41 One of the things I want to disclose to you is that today we are here at Kenny Bell Performance
02:46 in Rancho Cucamonga.
02:48 They are the experts on supercharged performance and they make a whole lot of supercharger
02:52 kits for Dodge vehicles and Hemis in particular.
02:56 Now they have a really nice Dynojet chassis dyno that they use to get a lot of empirical
03:02 data and to develop some of their supercharger kits.
03:06 We're going to be putting the Scat Pack Challenger on their dyno today to see how it stacks up
03:11 with last year's 392 SRT models.
03:28 Before we start our dyno test, I thought I would show you underneath this Scat Pack and
03:33 you'll notice right off the bat we have an engine cover on the bottom for aerodynamic
03:39 stability at high speeds.
03:42 We have a dual exhaust, that's a dual 2 3/4" stainless system with active mufflers and
03:52 you've got a Torquefly 8-speed transmission which is a cast housing there.
03:57 It looks like it's got a very nice, some sort of cast billet or solid oil pan there.
04:06 And we've got a center section there with a cross member made out of aluminum, a very
04:11 high quality looking piece.
04:14 And of course for our instrumentation we've got the whole chassis grounded with these
04:20 straps right here.
04:22 That's not part of the car.
04:24 And it's very flat underneath here you'll see.
04:27 Going all the way back again that's done for clearance and for high speed stability.
04:32 This car has a top speed of 177 miles an hour and you can really tell that it's made for
04:38 that underneath here.
04:39 It's a very nice car.
05:07 [Car engine]
05:31 There it is, max power 432.5.
05:45 We're going to do a real quick post mortem on our Scat Pack Challenger dyno test and
05:51 to help us out we've got Jim Bell of Kenny Bell Performance.
05:56 And Jim you've done quite a lot of these before.
05:58 You've developed a lot of kits, you've dynoed a lot of stock vehicles here as well as modified
06:04 ones.
06:05 And we have fortunately a lot of your previous work here on our screen here.
06:11 Point out for us that so everybody can see the run we just made on the Scat Pack, that
06:16 red one right there.
06:17 It would be the 432 horsepower run here.
06:22 Right on.
06:23 Now the one below it, that is what?
06:25 That's an SRT8 2014 car and it made about 9 horsepower less.
06:34 We believe it's because of the more efficient 8 speed transmission of the Scat Pack.
06:41 Right on.
06:42 Well, you know that's a very interesting thing you point out.
06:44 There is about a 9 horsepower difference which you know if you go by the literature from
06:49 Chrysler, they do claim another 10-15 horsepower over the SRT8.
06:54 But unlike the SRT8, this bad boy is about $4,000 less.
07:00 And that money that you save might be put to good use.
07:05 For instance, that blue line right there.
07:07 What is that blue line Jim?
07:10 This would be the SRT8 with our supercharger kit.
07:15 Yeah, 6.5 pounds of boost and 91 octane and nothing else.
07:20 This is a direct out of the box, bolt on in your garage deal here.
07:26 Show us that line compared to the Hellcat Jim, the one above it.
07:30 This would be our supercharger kit at 6.5 pounds of boost and the green would be the
07:37 Hellcat at 10 pounds of boost.
07:40 Yeah, that dyno test by the way we brought you a couple months ago right here.
07:44 And that's a totally bone stock Hellcat done in a direct 1-1/4 gear.
07:50 And you can see that for not a lot of money, you can take that stock SRT8, that lower blue
07:55 line, put that 6.5 pound kit on it and you get very close to that Hellcat line.
08:01 So what do you think we do with the scat pack since we're starting out with more horsepower.
08:07 Where is that going to put us?
08:09 The scat pack is going to end up making that same amount of horsepower difference about
08:14 nine horsepower.
08:15 Instead of 588 it's probably going to make 597.
08:19 Might even make, might even crush 600 horsepower Mark.
08:23 How much is that going to cost guys?
08:26 About $7,000 and $1,500 to install it.
08:29 Wow and heck, you know the dealer markups on the Hellcat alone are going for another
08:35 $10,000.
08:36 So basically that 622 green line right there, if you want that in your garage, in your driveway,
08:43 you're going to have to pay $70,000, $75,000 and you can get damn close for the cost of
08:50 this scat pack.
08:52 About well let's call it $40,000, it'll be way under $50,000.
08:55 So even if you do not get a blower kit for your brand new scat pack, you can see sort
09:01 of where you're going to fall in the pecking order.
09:04 Well Jim I want to thank you very much for today's dyno test and for showing us around.
09:09 And we hope to see more of you in the pages of Mopar Muscle Magazine.
09:13 Thanks for watching.
