00:00 This time on Roadkill, we've got a blown big block Chevy
00:02 in our '69 Impala.
00:04 And a Subaru WRX with a couple of friends.
00:08 - G'day. - Hi, mate.
00:09 - Finally, right?
00:10 It's happening.
00:11 - Let's go do some skids.
00:13 - Special bonus episode of Roadkill with Mighty Car Mods.

00:37 This is gonna be a good one.
00:41 We are finally doing the episode with Mighty Car Mods,
00:44 which if you're unfamiliar with those guys,
00:46 is basically like the Roadkill of Australia.
00:49 And apparently there is all kinds of fans
00:52 that cross over between them and us.
00:54 They've been demanding for years
00:56 that we do an episode together,
00:58 and we're finally doing it.
00:59 The way this is gonna work is we're gonna build a car
01:02 for those guys, and they're gonna build one for us.
01:05 We have no idea what the other team is doing,
01:08 and at the end, we're gonna get together
01:09 and have a whole lot of fun.
01:11 Now, the car that I chose is as American
01:14 as I could possibly find.
01:15 A giant 1969 Chevy Impala road barge.
01:20 It currently has a 350 small block Chevy in it,
01:23 a turbo 350 transmission,
01:26 and it will not by the time we're done with it.
01:29 We are gonna load this thing with the blown big block Chevy
01:32 that we took out of the crusher Camaro.
01:34 So these guys are gonna have six or 700 horsepower
01:37 in the ultimate ill handling road pillow.
01:40 And it's gonna be a riot.
01:42 Oh, it looks like an Impala.
01:48 That is an Impala.
01:50 He loves Impalas.
01:53 (engine revving)
01:55 What year is this?
01:56 - '69.
01:59 - It's an Impala custom.
02:01 - It's big.
02:02 - It's been customized by mother nature.
02:04 - Yeah, oh, it's gonna be hilarious.
02:06 - This is cool.
02:06 - Here's kind of my theory.
02:08 Everyone outside the United States thinks
02:10 of an American car as ill handling,
02:13 won't stop, and overpowered.
02:15 There you go.
02:17 We're gonna give it to 'em.
02:18 - They are right.

02:22 - The whole point is that it sort of drives.
02:24 It rides great, handles terrible, barely stops,
02:28 and it's gonna have 600 to 650 horsepower.
02:32 It should smoke one 14 inch radial for like 17 blocks.
02:37 - Ah, all right.
02:39 I like this car.
02:40 It's got character.
02:42 - We're here at West Tech Performance,
02:43 our buddies where we do all of our engine dyno testing,
02:45 and one might ask,
02:47 why aren't we doing this indoors over there?
02:49 Well, it's because they're completely filled up
02:51 and had no room for us.
02:52 So yeah, we're here in the parking lot in the rain.
02:55 It's not like it's our first time though.
02:57 It's only a small block Chevy.
02:58 We should have it out in a few minutes.
03:00 It's a pretty easy swap,
03:02 but I'm sure we're gonna run into some stuff
03:04 that's gonna slow us down,
03:05 and we've only got two days to do it.

03:09 - Leaking something.
03:15 - It is leaking.
03:16 - Power steering fluid.
03:18 - Oh yeah, we just ripped those hoses right apart.
03:20 That was cool.
03:22 - Wow.
03:23 Our most clean engine swap yet.
03:25 Engine removal rather.
03:27 - You not looked under the car?
03:29 - Still our most clean yet.

03:39 That made it, sort of.
03:40 - That totally worked.
03:41 Never tried that before.
03:42 - It worked.
03:43 - That wasn't safe at all.

03:46 - Now the fun begins.

03:49 - What if there's nothing in there?
03:54 We never opened it.
03:55 It's been three years.
03:56 - It's a pretty heavy nothing.
03:58 So you fans will remember that in 2014, 13,
04:03 we went to the PRI show,
04:05 and we had the crusher Camaro,
04:06 and we removed a blown big block Chevy,
04:09 and installed an LS7.
04:11 This is the big block Chevy.
04:14 It went to Steve Schmidt Racing Engines.
04:16 They boxed it up for us and sent it home,
04:18 and the box has not been opened since.
04:20 So this will kind of be like the Ark of the Covenant.
04:23 - Dun, dun, dun.
04:27 - Haven't seen that guy in a while.
04:30 - Hasn't gotten any lighter.
04:33 Oh, good thing we took it off.
04:34 - Good thing we took it off.
04:35 (laughing)
04:36 The Impala had power steering.
04:38 I'm gonna cut the lines right here,
04:40 and just loop them,
04:41 thereby turning it into manual steering.
04:43 Why?
04:44 Because with the blower driving everything,
04:45 we don't want to mess around
04:46 trying to mount a power steering pump to the big block.
04:49 So those guys will just have to live with manual steering.
04:53 In the interest of cheap,
04:57 we didn't want to buy a whole bunch of stuff
04:59 to make this happen.
05:00 That's why I'm giving these guys our old Turbo 400,
05:02 not our trick GearStar transmission,
05:05 and I'm using this torque converter,
05:06 which is completely wrong for the application.
05:09 It's probably gonna stall to the moon
05:11 with this much power, and that much weight,
05:13 and that lack of rear gear.
05:15 This is questionable at best.
05:17 You know, come to think of it,
05:21 this is all my stuff.
05:22 This better not get blown up.
05:25 So the steering box here is hitting that header tube there.
05:34 So we are gonna bash it.
05:36 Okay.
05:44 Watch an episode of Engine Masters
05:46 called the header bash, I think it's called.
05:48 And we absolutely destroyed a set of headers on the Dyno.
05:51 Way worse than that.
05:53 And it didn't make a bit of difference to horsepower.
05:56 Severe lack of parts is creating a roadblock for us.
05:59 There's not much left we can do
06:00 other than put the transmission cross member in,
06:03 which will not fit.
06:04 And the factory brackets are well into the frame.
06:06 We're gonna have to build some new ones.
06:08 That'll require welding.
06:10 So we're gonna push the car to the driveway of West Tech,
06:12 roll their welder out, get an extension cord,
06:15 and do a little fabricating.
06:18 FedEx guy will save us tomorrow.
06:19 Runs good with the big block.
06:22 Okay.
06:37 It's hideous, but it's on.
06:38 This thing's gotta be done by tomorrow night,
06:41 because Thursday we need to make our way down to San Diego
06:44 for the shootout with Marty and Moog.
06:46 They have no idea what they're in for with this thing.

08:33 You're gonna have to take out a giant chunk of that.

08:55 I think we still have some majors like the drive shaft

09:00 - We may be pulling a wire to activate the throttle.
09:02 - Yeah.
09:03 But remember,
09:05 we don't have to be to San Diego till tomorrow night.

09:12 So the drive shaft we've been waiting for
09:19 that we set out yesterday
09:22 is too long to actually be installed.

09:26 So that ain't happening tonight.
09:29 We'll have to figure out how to get that fixed tomorrow.

10:21 Finnegan completely butchered the frame
10:26 on this poor Impala to fit the alternator.
10:28 And then it wouldn't work.
10:29 And we didn't have time to fabricate a new bracket.
10:31 So we're gonna end up hitting the road
10:32 with no charging system whatsoever.
10:35 'Cause we've got other stuff to get done.
10:37 Stuff that's gonna keep us from hitting the highway.
10:39 Like, you know, throttle linkage, a drive shaft.
10:42 And the Mighty Car Mods guys are already on the way over.
10:45 Should we tell them the steering wheel
10:47 is held in place with zip ties?

10:53 That's about the best tire installation I've ever done.
10:58 Apparently the guys from Mighty Car Mods
11:00 have their car done
11:02 and they want to head over.
11:03 And I'm like, no, you can't come here
11:04 until this thing runs and drives.
11:06 So they could show up at any minute.

12:32 We thought you were gonna like half-ass this.

12:42 And now it is a Subaru.
12:44 - The Mighty Mods guys brought us a Subaru WRX
12:48 and I have no idea how they found this thing
12:50 for like three grand.
12:51 I guess it was really bashed.
12:53 And that gave them the excuse to cut the back end off of it
12:56 and turn it into a ute.
12:58 And that turbo, it's just the stock one,
13:00 but of course they hung it out of the hood
13:02 because that's what you do.
13:04 And they added Haltech EFI to it, tuned it up
13:06 and brought it over here for us to destroy.
13:09 Now this hasn't moved under its own power yet.
13:12 - You said you wanted the quintessential giant American car.
13:16 - That's what I thought.
13:17 - All you guys think of American cars,
13:19 totally overpowered, right?

20:26 The problem now is that it's running hot.
20:28 It hasn't really puked everywhere
20:29 and overheated roadkill style,
20:31 but we don't want that to happen.
20:32 So we're gonna take a little bit of a break,
20:33 let it cool down, let the traffic go away
20:35 so that we can motor on down to San Diego.
20:37 The real hijinks hasn't even started
20:40 and everybody is already having a killer time together.
20:43 And so after we stopped to get some flashlights
20:45 to tape onto the Impala for headlights,
20:48 we decided to split up the teams for a little while.
20:51 So this feels pretty normal for you, right?
20:53 - Very.
20:54 (laughing)
20:55 - This is so out of anything I've done before.
20:57 - Did it just die?
21:00 - Yeah.
21:01 - He just did the math in his head
21:02 and this is gonna be about a seven battery trip.
21:05 We get a battery every 12 miles, not good.
21:09 - But it sounds so good for those 12 miles.
21:11 - So I guess we drop the other battery
21:14 and leave the fan off and hit it, see what we can do.
21:18 - Cool.
21:18 - The thing is we knew that was gonna be a problem,
21:20 but somehow we were delusional that we could make it
21:23 like a hundred miles on a battery.
21:25 That's not happening.
21:26 Oh wow, this seat's terrible.
21:27 - Yeah, it's really bad.
21:28 - How are you driving this garbage?
21:30 - I don't know.

21:44 That's strange.
21:51 - Man, this is real.

21:58 - I'm quite enjoying the roadkill experience.
22:00 One thing is for sure, like people always,
22:02 you know, it's talking about, they go,
22:03 surely they set that up.
22:05 Surely that car does not break down six times in 10 miles.
22:08 It just happened tonight and it's for real.
22:13 The ground wire on the fuel pump was super, super sketchy.
22:17 And now I'm making it sketchier, but likely functional
22:22 by taping it to a spot on the panhard rod
22:27 that I ground bare.
22:28 And as Marty accurately noted, yes,
22:32 the panhard has rubber bushings on it,
22:34 but it did seem to work.
22:36 - I've noticed that the WRX is yet to break down.
22:40 - I couldn't help but notice that myself.
