AccuWeather forecasters say Philippe could skirt Bermuda before making landfall in Maine, threatening heavy rain, strong winds and storm surge early next week.
Transcript
00:00 Tropical Storm Felipe is the only organized system in town here for the Atlantic Basin,
00:05 a couple of other tropical waves.
00:06 But Felipe is a storm that's had a lot of longevity and it also is not just bringing
00:11 impacts right now to some of the Caribbean.
00:13 You can see it's centered not too far to the east, northeast, at least the deeper convection
00:17 just of the Puerto Rico area and also into the U.S. Virgin Islands.
00:21 We're dealing with some locally heavy rain.
00:23 We've seen some very heavy rain.
00:25 Some areas are retaliating four plus inches into some of the northern Leeward Islands,
00:30 the British Virgin Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Vieques, Culebra, and eastern
00:34 Puerto Rico seeing two to four inches out of this event.
00:37 It's bringing some risk to lives and property.
00:39 It is a manageable storm, but still flash flooding is a true danger in a lot of these
00:43 areas here.
00:44 This storm is bringing an active weather real impacts scale rating of less than one to the
00:48 northeast Caribbean.
00:49 Now, this storm has a future that is a pretty compelling storyline.
00:53 It's going to barrel right across Bermuda as a tropical storm late this week.
00:58 It's also probably going to make landfall somewhere close to where tropical storm Lee
01:03 made landfall.
01:05 At that time, it was a tropical rainstorm when Lee finally made it so far north.
01:10 But this system will be either a tropical storm, a subtropical storm, or kind of a hybrid
01:16 as it morphs into a cold, angry, North Atlantic low.
01:19 And it's also going to be dealing with some extra moisture and some changes in the atmosphere
01:24 as a cold front also reaches the northeast within 12 hours of Philippe's arrival.
01:28 So it's going to be a very high impact time.
01:30 In the meantime, for Bermuda, 40 to 60 mile per hour wind gusts.
01:33 It's going to be moving swiftly to the north, so two to four inches of rain expected there.
01:37 Some risk to lives and property.
01:38 Bermuda is well prepared for this storm like this.
01:41 But here we go into the end of the week.
01:43 This is where it really gets interesting from a New England perspective.
01:47 Here's our cold front.
01:48 That's going to bring some very heavy rain.
01:50 We could see some flash flooding into areas around Albany, New York and into places near
01:55 say Burlington and Plattsburgh, down into western parts of Massachusetts, Adams, North
02:00 Adams and so forth.
02:02 But then here we have Philippe and this is going to be a really interesting merger more
02:06 or less for at least the shield of rain between the front and then the tropical moisture.
02:11 Widespread rain rolls in Saturday night to Sunday through eastern Maine and into places
02:16 like the Canadian Maritime.
02:18 So it turns sharply cooler across the northeast.
02:20 It's going to be a really murky time here into the state of Maine with widespread rain
02:24 from Philippe.
02:25 That map was only showing Philippe's rain though as we're going to have heavier rain
02:28 farther to the west.
02:29 And we're looking at 40 to 60 mile per hour wind gusts for eastern Maine, so down east
02:33 Maine into the Canadian Maritimes.
02:34 And also two to four inches of rain possible for places like Calais and Batchias up into
02:38 areas around Caribou, Presque Isle and Holton.
02:41 Once you get down to the southwest near Bangor, one to two inches of rain.
02:44 Portland, probably under an inch of rain tied to this.
02:46 So some risk to lives and property, but a fairly manageable storm on at least hurricane
02:52 standards.
02:53 Again, we're looking at a tropical storm, probably either a tropical, subtropical or
02:56 some kind of a hybrid system as it morphs into a cooler system moving farther north.
03:02 So we're going to have a lot more on this over the next couple of days.
03:05 Lots of action in the northeast Friday night, Saturday and Sunday.
