00:00 Hello and welcome along to Invicta Sport, the only show on your TV dedicated to wrapping
00:17 up all of Kent's sporting action.
00:19 I'm Bartholomew Hall and here's what to expect on this Monday, the 2nd of October.
00:25 In history, Kent's FA Cup underdogs achieved the impossible with a dominant cup performance.
00:33 And breathe, Kent secures a spot in next year's Division One after a nail-biting final day.
00:40 Plus 60 years of speed, the Medway karting track where Lewis Hamilton spotted as a youngster
00:46 celebrates a major milestone.
00:50 But first this evening, a round-up of the headlines and Kent County Cricket Club have
00:54 secured their place in Division One of the County Championship following a dramatic final
00:58 day.
00:59 Kent couldn't force the win with their last opponents of the season, drawing with Lancashire,
01:04 but avoiding the loss meant the nail-biting hope to see Nottinghamshire avoid defeat against
01:10 Middlesex.
01:11 Kent ended their 2023 season on 111 points, seven clear of second-bottom Middlesex.
01:18 Head coach Matt Walker believes Kent can now use the off-season to relax and reflect, while
01:22 batter Daniel Beldrummond believes he's relieved to have avoided relegation.
01:28 "Very relieved to be honest, that's the word that springs to mind.
01:32 It's been a long, tough season.
01:35 Just happy we can win Division One going forwards.
01:38 We've got a lot to learn from for sure."
01:40 "I think generally it's just relief.
01:48 Now a few smiles around the dressing room.
01:53 We'd have liked to have done it a bit better than this, like to have gone into this last
01:57 game, eating a couple of points for survival and doing it with control, but having to rely
02:02 on somebody else was always going to probably be the case."
02:06 Meanwhile it's been announced that Australian bowler Wes Agar is set to return to Kent in
02:10 2024.
02:12 Head coach Matt Walker revealed the younger brother of international test spinner Ashton
02:15 Agar wills extend his stay at the county club.
02:18 The 26-year-old bowler was originally due to stay for just four county championship
02:22 games but ended up committing until the end of July.
02:26 Describing the bowler who claimed a five-wicket haul away to Northamptonshire in June, Walker
02:30 said he's "an absolutely great man to have around."
02:34 Now onto rugby, where Tunbridge and Canterbury both emerged victorious in the National League
02:38 Two East this weekend.
02:40 Canterbury staged a remarkable comeback against Worthing, overturning a 15-point deficit to
02:45 win 45-38.
02:46 Hooker Nathan Morris scored a hat-trick and fly-half Frank Reynolds contributed 20 points.
02:52 Meanwhile the Tunbridge Juddians secured their fourth win in the league so far, defeating
02:56 Bury St Edmunds 26-17.
02:59 Shaden Osgood and Howard Peckham scored crucial tries for Tunbridge, who will next take on
03:03 Henley and Canterbury will meet with Dorking.
03:07 Now onto the football, and Ashford United manager Kevin Watson has said his players
03:11 will refund fans who watched their recent 6-0 loss against East Grinstead.
03:16 Speaking after the match, Watson said he believes it's not so much about the results but rather
03:20 the performance that was extremely poor overall.
03:23 He went on to take accountability on behalf of the management team and apologised to the
03:27 travelling fans.
03:28 It comes after a 5-3 loss in the Italy and South East side's previous encounter.
03:33 Next up for Ashford is a meeting with Hythe on Tuesday in their rearranged league match.
03:38 Now as for the rest of this weekend's fixtures and results, it was a big weekend for Kent's
03:42 FA Cup entrance.
03:43 Although none had quite as tough a mission as Itmian's South East Sheppey, who travelled
03:47 all the way to Wales to take on one step higher Southern Premier side Merthyr Town.
03:52 As the confident underdogs, the Ites had quite the mountain to climb but were no less confident.
03:57 First up for today's feature game we travel all the way to Wales where FA Cup underdogs
04:02 Sheppey United took on Merthyr Town.
04:04 The Ites faced an early setback as the hosts made it 1-0 inside the opening 20 minutes
04:09 but a quick responding Josh Wisson equalised with this incredible punch from the edge of
04:13 the final third.
04:16 Captain Richie Hamill with just 20 minutes left put Sheppey ahead, sliding one past the
04:20 defence and town keeper but this wouldn't be the end of Sheppey's Cup upset.
04:25 Quick on his feet, Danny Leonard got this solo low shot through the near post and scoring
04:30 his maiden Sheppey goal, a well placed tap in from a James Fessy cross, Oscar Housko
04:35 sealed the deal to leave Sheppey 4-1 up at the final whistle.
04:39 Manager Ernie Batten described the win as one of the best days in his managerial career.
04:43 "The lads, you know, days like today define you as a player because there's lots of players
04:48 with ability but it's the mental strength, you know, and we talk about that now because
04:52 I think it's a big part of football and as you go up the football ladder, as you start
04:56 playing bigger games against better opposition, you know, you're going to get disappointments
04:59 because you're playing good sides.
05:01 So when we're in a goal down, set the lads, you know, you've got to get over this disappointment,
05:04 you've got to brush it off and get on with the game and get yourself back in the game."
05:08 Elsewhere in those FA Cup third round qualifiers, just Margate will be left behind with Dover,
05:13 Ramsgate and Maidstone set to join Sheppey in round four.
05:17 Margate suffered a 2-0 battering at Chesham United in a game where a goal in each half
05:21 saw the curtain fall on their Cup run in 2023.
05:25 Meanwhile the Whites came from behind with sub Zidane Sutherland making the difference
05:28 with a second half double to see Dover take a 2-1 victory.
05:32 The only Italian Premier fixture this week for Kent was with Folkestone who took the
05:36 trip up to Essex on Saturday for a clash with Concord.
05:39 The two sides equalised early in the second half, sadly for the travelling Invicta fans
05:43 however, Concord's Tajee Anderson put the hosts ahead with just a few minutes to go.
05:48 Invicta now sit 10th in the standings and bottom place Rangers climb up by one to take
05:52 21st position.
05:54 And it was a first win in six games for Ebsfleet United in the National League as Denis Kutryb
05:58 side found their feet again with an astonishing 3-1 points grab from visiting Ballroom.
06:03 A Luke O'Neill opener combined with a brace from Darren McQueen saw almost total domination
06:08 from the fleet over a Wood side that finished with just nine men due to injury.
06:12 Ballroom Wood managed to claw one back in the 36th minute.
06:16 To be fair that's what I've been waiting for really, just to get off the mark and hopefully
06:22 now that I'm off the mark I'm hoping that the goals will just keep flooding and the
06:26 thing is I've had more than enough chances as well which I think in previous games I
06:30 haven't really been having too many chances so it's a positive and hopefully I can just
06:35 add to it.
06:36 And finally a controversial refereeing decision led to Gillingham getting their first draw
06:40 of the League Two season so far.
06:42 A fourth minute opener from Macaulay Bond saw the 27-year-old take his first goal since
06:46 joining the Gilles in August.
06:48 However when a misjudged challenge by Ethan Coleman looked as though the referee was to
06:51 issue a yellow card, Mansfield played a quick free kick before he had the chance to hand
06:56 it out.
06:57 The referee put his card back in his pocket, play continued which led to an equaliser from
07:01 Keylor Dunne.
07:02 With a possession share of 53-47 in favour of the Gilles, neither side could find the
07:06 winner as both seemed to have found their match ending the scoreline at 1-1.
07:10 Following the game Gilles boss Neil Harris explained why he believes the frustrations
07:14 of his team were justified.
07:16 His body language and his demeanour has made our team stop and think he's a yellow card
07:23 and I said that is taking the decision out of the game.
07:30 He then has to bring it back.
07:32 And I spoke to him and he understands that.
07:34 He needs to see it again and discuss it with his coaches.
07:38 So it's very contentious and very subjective but ultimately I think we're right to feel
07:44 hard done by in the moment.
07:48 But to talk more about that incredible win for Sheppey I'm pleased to say that I'm now
07:51 joined by Sheppey United's Head of Communications Lee Allen.
07:55 On the line, Lee thank you very much for joining us and welcome to Invicta Sport today.
07:59 What's the feeling at the club on this Monday?
08:02 It must be over the moon.
08:04 Oh I'm so excited.
08:08 We couldn't wait for that draw to come out.
08:10 We thoroughly deserved that win on Saturday.
08:13 We went in as the underdogs and we weren't taking it lightly at all.
08:17 But to come away with 4-1 win having been 1-0 down, the move was brilliant on the way
08:24 home.
08:25 Absolutely and we'll get on to talking about the draw in just a minute for round four,
08:29 for the final round of qualifying, the furthest the club has got before.
08:32 But let me take you back to the game.
08:33 So you're 1-0 down in the opening of the game.
08:37 It's looking like your average underdog cup clash.
08:40 But then something changes.
08:42 What was that something that then turned it all around for Sheppey?
08:47 Well as soon as we went 1-0 down, the Mangeroni batting was straight onto the lads saying
08:51 'Chins up, keep going'.
08:53 Because it was an open game.
08:55 We were creating chances before they scored.
08:58 But as you can see here, the goalkeeper just makes a little mistake there.
09:02 Fair play to Wiseau.
09:03 He's hit that first time and it's a great finish.
09:06 Fairly composed.
09:07 Absolutely.
09:08 It's all about being switched on, is it?
09:10 And we heard from Ernie after the game.
09:12 He was absolutely elated.
09:14 Just how much passion he has for the boys and getting into the spirit of things.
09:20 Has that been the theme so far this season for Sheppey?
09:24 Oh yeah.
09:25 I mean we've got fantastic team spirit here.
09:27 We've gone through a lot of changes during the summer.
09:31 But one thing that has stayed consistent is the performance and the attitude of all the
09:35 lads on the pitch.
09:36 We've seen that around beating in the league.
09:39 We've only played three league games because we've had great success in the Cups.
09:44 But yeah, I can't fault any of the lads.
09:49 Everyone who played, they played with that passion and that pride.
09:52 You've got to bear in mind as well, these guys all got on the coach at six o'clock in
09:56 the morning.
09:57 So it's up at five o'clock.
09:58 It was a long journey for them.
10:00 But you wouldn't have thought that any of that hadn't affected them because right from
10:04 the first minute, they were up for it.
10:06 Absolutely.
10:07 I mean it was a trip well spent.
10:08 Not just for the players but also for the fans that came along as well.
10:12 Now in the last few hours we heard the fourth round draw.
10:15 Sheppy, you're going to be meeting with Italy and Premier side Bielerricci.
10:19 Now you've done it already.
10:21 The team have beaten a team step up.
10:23 Surely this is just a walk in the park?
10:25 I wouldn't say that.
10:28 We don't take anyone lightly.
10:30 What we will be doing over the next two weeks now is doing our homework.
10:34 We'll watch how they play.
10:35 We'll probably talk to a couple of other teams, see if they can share some information.
10:40 I think we're better going in as the underdog.
10:44 The pressure is off us a little bit.
10:46 Pressure will be on them, especially being the home team as well.
10:50 We've not scored less than three goals in this competition.
10:53 Every game has gone through.
10:54 We've got goals in us.
10:55 So if we can keep it tight, we've got fantastic winners.
11:00 We've got a great striker, we've got Goodmanfield.
11:02 The defence has been tight all season.
11:05 There's nothing to say that we can't go one more step forward and get in that first round
11:08 proper.
11:09 It's been so fantastic for the loyal fans.
11:14 We've had success in the last couple of years, but to get in the first round proper would
11:17 be the ultimate for Sheppey United.
11:20 Absolutely.
11:21 We haven't got long left.
11:22 Just a really quick one now.
11:23 You're talking about that momentum.
11:25 No game this weekend, next one next Tuesday.
11:27 Is that welcome from the club in just a couple of words?
11:30 We have got a game Saturday in the FA Trophy.
11:34 We play away to Ramsgate, which is going to be a tough game.
11:39 But you're saying that we went there in the league last year and we won there.
11:45 Best of luck to yourself, Lee, and the rest of the club.
11:48 Sorry, sorry, I've got to cut you off there because we've got to go to a break.
11:50 But plenty more sport news made just for Kent after this.
11:53 Thanks, guys.
