Many employers still refuse to provide accommodation for their workers that meet requirements as mandated by law, says the Labour Department.
Its deputy director-general (operational) Mohd Asri Abdul Wahab said in a press conference following the raid on Monday (Sept 25) that a multi-department raid on a plastics manufacturer's premises in Taman Tan Sri Yaakob in Johor Baru, Johor showed a lack of proper facilities and unsatisfactory living conditions for its foreign workers.

00:00 The Labour Department says many employers still refuse to provide accommodation for
00:07 their workers that meet requirements as mandated by law.
00:12 Its Deputy Director-General in Operations, Mohd Asri Abdu Wahab said a multi-department
00:17 raid on plastics manufacturers' premises in Taman Tantri Yaakob in Johor Bahru showed
00:22 a lack of proper facilities and unsatisfactory living conditions for its foreign workers.
00:27 "All facilities are outside of what we have set up by the Department of Conservation.
00:32 For example, there must be a locker.
00:35 Because the lockers are important for the workers to store their valuables.
00:41 So when we ask where they store their passports, where they store their work equipment, they
00:48 will say, 'For storage.' "
00:50 He said in a press conference following the raid on Monday, which also involved the Occupational
00:55 Safety and Health Department and social security organisation.
01:00 Mohd Asri said the company has 325 foreign workers and only 16 hostels were provided
01:06 to house them for the past two years, adding that the facilities were ill-equipped, with
01:11 some not having beds nor proper toilets.
01:14 He said that authorities would initiate an investigation under the Workers' Minimum
01:18 Standard of Housing and Amenities Act 1990 or Act 446 and take the employers' and workers'
01:24 statements before issuing KEMPA notices to the company, adding that the company would
01:29 be fined maximum of RM50,000 for each offence.
01:33 Mohd Asri urged all employers to comply with Act 446, which aims to ensure that employers
01:39 meet minimum standards for worker accommodation that came into effect in September 2020.
