00:00 give a shout out to our crowd, our fans, they're incredible.
00:05 Our students, the student section, what a great atmosphere.
00:09 This is what college football is all about.
00:11 Our first Big 12 game, playing a team like Oklahoma in our stadium in Nippert.
00:18 And when you sit there as a little boy,
00:22 looking at college football, that's what you wanna see.
00:25 And that's what we had today.
00:27 So incredible job by our administrative team and everybody involved in putting
00:32 this together because there's a lot going on to make this a great fan experience
00:37 out here and they did it, man, it was awesome.
00:41 It's such a great place to play.
00:44 I'm disappointed, I was seeing the score.
00:46 I'm proud of the way our guys fought.
00:48 I'm looking at the field and seeing guys, we're a little bit undermanned as far as
00:52 the numbers go, depth issues, and our guys are battling.
00:55 They're coming off, they got shoulders, legs, and
00:58 they don't wanna come off the field.
00:59 They wanna continue to play and continue to fight.
01:01 And I told them that's what championship teams are made of.
01:03 And that's why we have to be.
01:05 This outcome is not what we wanted, but we're striving toward that.
01:08 We're striving toward championships.
01:10 And if you've got a team full of guys that will fight,
01:14 then you're gonna get there.
01:15 And we're gonna continue to work hard.
01:17 We're gonna continue to strive to get there.
01:19 I'm very proud of our defense today.
01:21 They held a very high powered offense at 20 points.
01:25 And not a lot of help from our offense today.
01:26 So they're right back out there and having to continue to defend an offense that goes
01:31 as fast as anybody in the country with a quarterback that maybe isn't experienced
01:35 as anybody in the country that came into the game with 83% completion percentage and
01:39 scored 55 points a game.
01:40 We hold them to 20 points.
01:41 I was proud of our guys on that side of the ball.
01:43 Quite honestly, played good enough for us to win on that side.
01:47 And I think offensively, in spurts, move the ball.
01:51 I know the night we had some protection issues tonight or today.
01:55 That we had some guys running free in the secondary and
01:58 didn't have time to throw it.
01:59 I mean, those are certainly things we're gonna need to work on this week.
02:02 I mean, as far as the pressures go,
02:03 they did a venerable outstanding defensive coach, did a great job with some pressures.
02:07 We popped a few runs in there but not consistent.
02:11 I think that obviously hurt us.
02:13 Game plan going in, we wanted to control the game on our side and
02:17 be able to occupy the ball.
02:18 Be able to run the ball and get on the sticks.
02:21 And the problem with that is when you get off the sticks, and we did in the first
02:24 half, I felt like we were third and long.
02:27 Most of the first third downs that we had, maybe the first five or six.
02:30 And it's hard to overcome those when it's that long yardage.
02:34 We're not very good on third down because of that today.
02:37 But again, I think on offense, our guys played hard.
02:39 They're playing their butts off.
02:41 And that's what it takes, continue to do that.
02:44 Missed a field goal, we knocked down a 55 yarder, that was good to see.
02:48 And but certainly have a short week this week.
02:52 We've got to go on the road in the Big 12.
02:53 The team has got some dings, which is difficult.
02:57 We need to live in the training room this week, total guys.
02:59 We have to get our bodies and minds right, ready to go.
03:02 It'll be important for us this week to take it a little bit off physically
03:07 throughout practice.
03:09 It'll be a lot of mental as this week as we're headed all the way across country to
03:12 play on a Friday night.
03:13 So third, we'll be out of here.
03:14 I mean, it's gonna come around very fast.
03:16 >> What do you tell the guys that it's been the 14, 15 possessions without a touchdown?
03:22 That's a very good thing.
03:23 >> Yeah.
03:25 >> How do you do that?
03:26 >> Yeah, I mean, we're not telling them that.
03:28 I mean, we're trying to score every possession.
03:31 I mean, we're going out trying to make plays.
03:34 And one of the things we're not doing right in the last whatever,
03:38 those possessions.
03:39 We got some chunk plays, 15, 20, 25 yards, but not the 40, 50,
03:43 60 yards that are getting you all the way down into the end zone.
03:47 Those big plays, the touchdowns, there's one thing that happened.
03:51 I mean, today we're playing against a really good defense.
03:53 And I think Coach Benham was one of the better defensive coaches throughout
03:55 the country.
03:56 And again, we had some opportunities.
03:59 I thought in the throw game, we gave up some pressure.
04:02 And the Emory's gotta come off the spot where we got sat, a couple of those.
04:05 And I think, and even that, with seven minutes to go,
04:08 we're still in the game, it's a two possession game.
04:11 So we're still in it, still fighting to go tie this thing up.
04:14 But we obviously gotta find ways to get in the end zone, there's no question.
04:19 >> And the reception by Emory, a couple of covers to the corner,
04:22 what are you talking about?
04:23 >> Yeah, yeah, they were spinning the coverage to Xavier, so
04:26 it was two over one right there.
04:28 We gotta work this side.
04:30 In his mind, he was thinking in red zone, or close to the red zone.
04:34 Let me throw it to the corner back here, let him go up and get it.
04:37 The problem with that is we were on the right hash.
04:40 The ball's gotta travel the sideways of the field and to the end zone.
04:43 Safety had time to get over top, safety made a good pick in the end zone.
04:45 But you gotta work the three man side that we had over here in the boundary.
04:50 >> A lot of thought coming into this game about your ability to play with Oklahoma,
04:55 you gotta be proud of those guys.
04:57 >> Yeah, no question.
04:59 I mean, we gave up some plays in the secondary early in the season,
05:03 and guys are gonna get tested out there.
05:06 Man, they held up good today.
05:07 I think they hit one vertical ball on the sideline, maybe today.
05:11 That was the only deep shot they hit.
05:14 They battled, again, they played hard.
05:16 The thing about Oklahoma is they're going so fast,
05:19 you have to literally, it taxes you physically and mentally.
05:22 You have to play that play.
05:24 You just ran your butt off, made a tackle.
05:25 You gotta look up, get your call from the sideline, and find your receiver, and
05:29 get lined up like that.
05:31 It's extremely difficult, and it's hard to simulate that in practice.
05:33 And our defense staff did a really good job this week of that,
05:36 getting our guys prepared to play.
05:38 Again, we short-handed a little bit back there on the back end there.
05:42 And then, Sam, you didn't play again today.
05:44 You got some other guys that were out, and the guys that played, man,
05:48 they played hard.
05:48 I'm really, really proud of those guys.
05:50 >> Harsher than Ryan,
05:52 finishing not getting enough forward vision to play, but
05:55 I know you have a time to play.
05:57 What's the reason you guys might be playing?
06:01 >> Well, I mean, I think it's probably several things.
06:03 If you get off the sticks a little bit, then it makes it a lot more difficult.
06:06 Because if you're inside the red and it's third and, let's say, eight or more,
06:09 it's very condensed, the field is.
06:11 And so now they're just a little bit tighter coverage on you.
06:13 So it's harder to find those windows and to throw the football.
06:17 And then obviously, you're not gonna run the ball, really,
06:19 when it's that third long in that situation.
06:21 I think the part of the big thing is to stay in on sticks, having those second and
06:25 medium calls and third and short calls to be able to continue to get into the endzone.
06:29 I do think it comes down to guys' execution as far as fundamentally
06:33 faking the blocks.
06:35 And here's the thing, too, when you get the tight red,
06:37 usually there's gonna be a one-on-one with somebody.
06:39 You gotta, as a running back, you're gonna have to make somebody miss.
06:42 You're gonna run through a tackle.
06:44 You're gonna have to get on the block and make my block.
06:46 If one guy comes off the block, well, now maybe there's two guys.
06:49 And so I think we gotta do a better job of fundamentals inside the red zone,
06:54 blocking with our up front and our tight ends.
06:57 >> Three of 15 on third down today,
07:00 does that do something to almost automatically or just lack of execution?
07:05 >> I think it was third and long.
07:06 If we go back and look at the 15, over half of third and eight or more,
07:09 if I had to guess, probably more than that, really.
07:14 And it is so difficult versus a team that can bring pressure on you.
07:18 You can't hold the ball that long to have time to run down the field and
07:21 get that many yards to throw it.
07:23 I think the third down lows today were really more first and
07:27 second down issues.
07:28 [BLANK_AUDIO]
07:34 >> Yeah, really proud of him.
07:36 We feel him in the fire, man.
07:38 Your first start against Oklahoma, 55 points a game and go extremely fast.
07:42 I thought he played really, really solid football game.
07:46 A couple times out of position to be expected probably, but
07:50 it was flying around.
07:52 He was making plays, making tackles.
07:56 Because what they do, they spread you out.
07:57 I mean, in his position, he's gonna get exposed.
08:00 You gotta make plays in that position.
08:02 And I thought he did a really good job.
08:03 I think it's gonna help us down the road, certainly,
08:06 to have him available to be out there to play and
08:08 get some experience like he did today against really fine offense.
08:12 >> Aiden, you just go in from a lot of detail,
08:14 you're talking about the hard ground outs.
08:16 >> Mm-hm.
08:16 >> I thought that was a good point.
08:18 >> Yeah, I mean, yeah, we got a lot of confidence in Carter.
08:20 I mean, very disappointing, the last week when he gets a kick.
08:23 Sometimes they can play with a kicker's head a little bit mentally.
08:25 The one that he missed today, I thought was a little bit of a low snap on that one.
08:32 And I think the timing got thrown off a little bit, and
08:34 he ended up kind of hooding the ball.
08:36 And it wasn't a solid kick.
08:38 Obviously got confidence in him, nailed a 55 yarder.
08:42 And he hit that right in the screws.
08:44 I mean, that was a great swing on there.
08:46 And hopefully that'll give him a lot of confidence to know that he can knock him
08:49 down.
08:50 And we gotta win some games with him.
08:52 I mean, we are, and we got a lot of confidence in him to do it.
08:55 I thought Fletch punted the ball, which was good today, man.
08:57 He was pinning them back there.
08:59 Really flipped the field, which obviously goes hand in hand and
09:01 helps your defense to really get them backed up.
09:04 So I thought the teams, special teams, were very, very solid today.
09:08 That phase was good, defensive phase was good.
09:10 I mean, ultimately, offense, we gotta score more points, bottom line.
09:14 >> You're a better team with pace, and this is a hard lesson for him.
09:18 Is he back?
09:20 >> Yeah, he'll be back this week.
09:22 And we're opening arms up to him, bring him back, and
09:25 be ready to rock and roll this week.
09:27 So certainly hope you guys have a great game this week.
09:30 [BLANK_AUDIO]
09:38 Yeah, because I think you focus on every single day, all right,
09:41 what do we have to do today, which will be tomorrow at practice,
09:44 to do the best job we can possibly do.
09:46 You got a lot of fight inside of you, you're gonna bring it every single day.
09:50 And our guys, and what they showed today, they will come back ready to go tomorrow.
09:54 You have to surrender their outcome.
09:56 You have to focus on that day and give everything you have.
09:58 When you do that, the outcome, more than not, is gonna come in your favor.
10:02 And are you disappointed when it doesn't?
10:03 Absolutely, but that's the adversity that we have to work through.
10:09 We don't have a ton of depth in a lot of positions right now.
10:11 And so the guys that are out there are gonna have to play.
10:12 They're gonna have to keep going and go out and make plays.
10:16 You can't let a bad play or a bad game affect you.
10:19 You gotta come back the next day and ready to go.
10:21 Just another opportunity.
10:23 >> Russ and Neil, what was the look you were trying to accomplish with
10:27 Apple split out wide and put the plate there and-
10:30 >> Trying to get some first downs, and
10:31 we did.
10:33 I mean, you try to play with defensive coordinators and
10:36 then it was over there, and listen, they've not seen that from us.
10:38 Let's spread them all out, let's see how they do it.
10:40 We picked up first down and picked up a few more yards.
10:42 And any which way we can try to steal yards with that,
10:46 what you're trying to do is get them to miss a line.
10:48 And they were confused, so it worked.
10:51 >> Neil, then Marshall.
10:51 [BLANK_AUDIO]
10:58 >> What number is that?
11:00 >> [INAUDIBLE] >> For them?
11:02 >> Yeah.
11:04 >> I think they're linebackers, man.
11:05 What they did with their linebackers, they played downhill quite often.
11:09 And when they bring pressures and when they blocked our backers up in the gaps,
11:13 obviously they're right there, and they made the tackles,
11:16 they made the plays there.
11:18 Whenever we were spitting those runs, our guys blocked it up really,
11:21 really nicely.
11:22 But if a guy's a free hitter at that linebacker,
11:25 we did not make many of those guys miss in the hole.
11:28 And I think those guys got us down on one of the fourth and
11:31 ones early in the game, 28 right there, makes a tackle in the gap.
11:33 Sometimes it is gonna be one on one, you gotta try to make those guys miss.
11:39 >> Last year, Marshall and Jason mentioned guys,
11:42 guys in their top class, definitely working on [INAUDIBLE]
11:47 >> Yeah.
11:48 >> And you have a short- >> I know, it's tough.
11:50 >> What's the recipe, you're ready for- >> Yeah, that's tough.
11:54 But I think for us this week, it is gonna be a lot more mental.
11:58 So we're gonna watch the film, and continue to watch and
12:01 see exactly landmarks where you have to get your hat, where you have to put your
12:04 hands, if they're doing this, you gotta do this.
12:07 So it's gonna be a lot of teaching.
12:08 And then we'll have one workday this week, where we'll get after,
12:11 it'll be like our Tuesday, Wednesday combined.
12:13 We have to get after, we have to rev our engine back up and
12:17 get ready to go again with our guys.
12:18 And that'll be our workday.
12:20 And so that'll be the day that we'll have to get all that work in,
12:23 where you're looking at short yardage and red zone, tight red type work.
12:25 It's gotta be this week.
12:29 It's gotta be this week.
12:30 Thursday, we're on a plane, we're out of here.
12:31 And flying across two time zones, and we're playing really late on Friday night.
12:36 So we gotta get ready to go, and we utilize all the time,
12:39 leading all the way up to game time, so I get our guys ready.
12:41 >> Your first, obviously first Big 12 game,
12:45 but do you take anything from this guys game, from this one day?
12:49 All right, step up in competition, new league.
12:51 >> Yeah. >> We can compete and win.
12:54 >> Yeah, that's what I told the guys.
12:55 I mean, I don't know how many championships these guys have won in
12:58 the Big 12, a lot.
12:59 You guys may know, I don't know, a whole lot.
13:02 They come in here, it's an entourage when they travel.
13:06 I mean, I don't know how many planes and buses they took here,
13:08 and how many people they have on the sideline.
13:10 And how many, I mean, cuz Friday, we're trying to,
13:12 I mean, they had guys that wanted to come before Friday's happening.
13:15 I mean, it's like a boatload of people, cuz they've won a lot of championships.
13:18 They've been around a long time.
13:20 And this is our first game in the Big 12, and our guys went toe to toe.
13:24 I mean, it should be encouraging to our guys and to our people to say, hey,
13:28 listen, we're not that far off.
13:30 We gotta continue to fight,
13:31 continue to do the things we can to compete for championships in the Big 12.
13:34 And we're excited about that.
13:35 We're excited about the challenges coming up next week.
13:37 >> Thanks, Coach.
13:38 >> All right, thanks guys.
