00:00 Doja Cat releases new music and we take you to her surprise in LA as Ed Sheeran
00:04 premieres a new song live. Nicki Minaj is blaming others for her husband being on house arrest.
00:10 And we have interviews with Noah Khan and R&B legends Tony Tony Tone.
00:14 What's up? It's me Tetris. It's Friday, September 22nd and this is Billboard News.
00:23 Let's kick things off with our Friday Music Guide.
00:27 Doja Cat has been serving devil red and she's arrived with her full album Scarlet.
00:37 And also brings us a video for Agora Hill.
00:40 More tunes coming at you throughout the show but for now our top stories.
00:49 Both Nicki Minaj and Ryan Hurd are coming to the defense of their spouses. Let's break it down.
00:55 It's Barbie, bitch, if you still in doubt.
00:57 Nicki Minaj is responding after her husband Kenneth Petty was placed under house arrest
01:02 for 120 days following a series of social media posts allegedly showing him violating his probation.
01:08 Nicki seemed to respond to the drama on her IG stories writing,
01:12 "Can't call the cops every time you flop. Just saying."
01:15 Along with a string of laughing emojis.
01:18 The house arrest came after Nicki's husband was recorded on video making threatening remarks to
01:22 a specific individual while in the company of someone with a criminal record, according to a
01:27 Central District of California court order. Ryan Hurd is coming to his wife Maren Morris'
01:37 defense after the singer released the bridge and announced her departure from country music.
01:42 Ryan took to IG to support Maren writing, "She deserves to be celebrated, not just tolerated."
01:47 He also hit back against those who have criticized his wife writing in part,
01:51 "I'm so sick of watching my wife get the shit kicked out of her by the internet.
01:55 I'm sick of every talking head having some kind of stupid opinion about what she says.
01:59 It's the same every time. Why are you surprised when she calls out something racist or homophobic?
02:04 I'm sick of people getting rewarded for it."
02:07 He continued his support of her final country project,
02:10 "To me, the bridge is beautiful and so rock and roll. She deserves a little sunshine for
02:14 the burden she has carried for every artist and fan that feels the same way."
02:19 Kylie Minogue had us dancing with "Padam Padam" and "Tension," and now we're getting the full
02:23 engavelment. Noah Khan has everybody talking and he talked to us in studio. Check it out.
02:35 "There was a feeling in the studio of like, 'Whoa, this is something special.' I couldn't
02:40 tell if it was something that felt so special to me or if it was just going to be special to
02:43 everybody. I was almost okay with it being this amazing experience for myself. Selfishly, I was
02:53 like, 'This is so cool, I'm so happy. I feel so fulfilled making this music. I felt so creatively
03:00 in control. Everything I did felt right. There was no second-guessing lyrics or second-guessing
03:06 production choices. It all felt like it was leading to this greater sense of justice in my creativity.
03:13 And I think at the time I couldn't see that as an indication of success or like,
03:17 relatability or something that would connect to a lot of people, but it just felt so right for me
03:21 that I was so fine with whatever happened. I got to hang out with him. It was exactly like what I
03:26 wanted an experience at Post Malone to be. I got into the room and he was sitting cross-legged,
03:31 drinking Bud Lights and smoking cigarettes, and I got to sit down and smoke a cigarette,
03:35 drink a Bud Light or two with him. We talked about underpants, we talked about Walk Hard,
03:41 which is one of our favorite comedies ever. We got a jam on some music and it was just perfect.
03:47 He is so kind, exactly the way that I imagined him to be. For the full interview, hit Billboard.com.
03:54 The boys of Blink-182 are back with their first full-length album together since 2011,
04:00 set to drop this fall. The band is holding us over with the release of its lead single,
04:05 "One More Time." The streets of LA were busy this weekend. We were in 'em. Let me show you
04:17 what's poppin'. Doja Cat paints the town red, literally. It said, "Sharon gets intimate in LA
04:24 and local students hear from their inspirations. We take you up close and personal with the stars
04:29 in this week's Billboard All Access." Doja Cat's album "Scarlet" has arrived, and her fans arrived
04:37 at Spotify's pop-up on the streets of LA last night to watch Doja Cat paint. She danced and
04:43 entertained the crowd, adding the words "not afraid" to the devilish piece. She even painted
04:48 the windows. Spotify allowed fans to grab exclusive merch for the one-time event.
04:54 And not too far away still in LA, Billboard was in attendance at Amazon Music Live with Ed Sheeran.
05:00 The exclusive affair saw him take a break from stadium crowds and perform his hits.
05:05 He even premiered a brand new song.
05:17 Yeah, this is a song called "American Town."
05:24 Earlier this week, we caught up with John Mayer at the Wiltern.
05:32 Here's what happens. My mouth thinks of cool things to say. Then I say them,
05:39 and then I'm like, "Okay, next song." And I spiral as I play. That was too harsh.
05:44 They even duetted some Tom Petty.
05:46 I dropped my first mixtape when I was 16 years old. It was called "Anxiety."
06:00 And that's when I made up my mind, like, "No, this is what I'm gonna do. I'm not giving myself
06:03 any other option." And keeping it in the City of Angels, rapper Cordae and others partnered
06:08 with Save the Music to give high school students in the city of Inglewood a peek into the music
06:13 industry. We can make sure from an external standpoint that there's opportunities, that
06:18 there's mentorship, there's job opportunities, that there's a community that we're building
06:21 around those young people to make sure that the access is truly given to them after they learn
06:26 the information. Talk about some dance moves. But boy, Troy is following up Rush with new song
06:32 "Get Me Started" in a sick sample. R&B throwback time, we had "Tony Tony Tone"
06:43 in studio and I'm still shook. I saw you go into high gear on that bad boy. I don't know if you
06:48 was tripping off producing it, but you were real meticulous about sounds that you wanted because
06:53 you came over the pad and you wanted that maestro drum machine. That I did. You had that, was it
06:59 MPC 60, whatever? And you took the sounds out and put up in that. I saw you put that together. I was
07:04 like, "Man, that was big." The funny thing is I remember, like, I thought I was, like, super clever
07:08 because I said, I thought I was upping Babyface a lot because, you know, he's, like, the best song
07:13 writer in the world. Babyface had those, Kenny has those, those lyrics that girls just be like,
07:18 "Ooh, ooh." And I'm like, I might have got him on this one lyric. Just one time in my life when I
07:22 said, "Victoria won't be no secret." I was like, "Got you, Kenny." Just for, like, four bars. He
07:32 got me for, like, 60 albums or something. It's just time. I put up one picture and people,
07:38 the response we got back from people was pretty, I was, I wasn't really ready for that. He has kids,
07:42 he has kids. I don't have any kids. I have a lot of nieces and nephews and none of them really
07:46 know why, why we might be, might have been famous or popular. I mean, they kind of wonder why. So,
07:52 I think it was time to come together and kind of show them what we did and show the grandkids and
07:56 everybody, cousins, nieces, nephews, people that who we are, we can come together as a family and
08:02 do this again. This is important to see people come together. 25 years later, it's a lot of kids
08:06 around us and our kids, you know, that have never seen us together getting down and they're probably
08:11 gonna be like, "Man, you know, you know what I mean? It's gonna be special." For the full interview,
08:17 hit Billboard.com. And that is the show. See you again next week, but here's one more entry in our
08:23 Friday Music Guide. The trio of Lady A bring us their latest with "Love You Back" that is reminiscent
08:29 of the group's signature sound.
