00:00 I've never really cared about that stuff.
00:02 - Selena Gomez is reacting to the fact
00:04 that she is one of the most followed people on social media.
00:08 The "Single Soons" singer joined Universal Music Group
00:11 and Thrive Global's Music and Health Conference
00:13 on September 19th and got candid
00:16 about being the most followed woman on the internet
00:19 in a video obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
00:22 - I suppose I'm grateful for the platform
00:25 and I would love to continue to use it
00:27 for what I'm able to do,
00:30 but the numbers are just numbers, you know?
00:33 But it's an honor.
00:37 (audience laughing)
00:38 - Selena, who boasts more than 429 million followers
00:42 on Instagram alone,
00:44 joined Universal Music Group CEO Sir Lucian Grange
00:48 and Thrive Global CEO Ariana Huffington on stage
00:51 at the event and was vulnerable
00:53 about the weight of the power she holds online.
00:57 - It can be a little heavy, I feel, for people,
00:59 and I think that's what kind of keeps me in check,
01:01 to be honest.
01:02 I think I can be a little reckless with my emotions
01:05 and having conversations with young people,
01:07 women who are going through divorces or going through chemo.
01:10 It's not just about me, and I'm fully aware of that.
01:14 I will just always cherish it.
01:16 It's a big responsibility, though.
01:17 It's a little scary,
01:18 she said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
01:21 She also reflected on her Apple TV+ documentary,
01:24 "My Mind and Me,"
01:25 which chronicled the ups and downs of her life
01:28 over a six-year span and was released in November 2022.
01:33 "I felt like I got to say things
01:34 that I've been keeping in for years.
01:37 It's very hard for me to watch.
01:39 I will never watch it again, but I'm very proud of it.
01:42 I couldn't have been luckier to have the people
01:44 that worked on it with me," she added, per the outlet.
01:48 Back when the film came out,
01:49 Access Hollywood's Zuri Hall spoke to Selena
01:52 about the emotional project,
01:54 and she opened up about what she feared most
01:56 in her darkest moments.
01:58 -Hi, Selena, how are you? -Hi, how are you?
01:59 You look amazing. -I'm doing well.
02:00 Thank you, and same.
02:02 First of all, congratulations on this project,
02:04 and secondly, thank you for making it.
02:07 Like, I'm not gonna get super emotional,
02:09 but thank you for making it.
02:11 You know, it took a lot of brave vulnerability
02:13 to share a story like this, your story,
02:16 and I just spoke with Alec, who said that you gave him
02:19 full license to do what he would with your story.
02:22 How much vulnerability, how much, if any, fear
02:25 was there attached to that?
02:27 -Oh, yeah, I'm still scared, actually.
02:29 It was very uncomfortable, to be honest, in moments,
02:32 but then I feel like it was also necessary.
02:36 I thought the story needed to be bigger
02:38 than just me and my music.
02:41 I think it took a life of its own,
02:43 and he just created the story
02:45 that truly is my life in a time capsule.
02:48 -Yeah. Your life in a time capsule, it is inspiring.
02:52 It's gut-wrenching.
02:54 You know, I ask this next question,
02:55 and I don't ask it lightly,
02:57 and only so much as you're comfortable sharing,
02:59 but that log line behind us says,
03:00 "Every breath, a breakthrough."
03:03 What does that mean for you?
03:04 And in your darkest moments of that struggle,
03:08 what did you maybe fear most?
03:10 -I think I was scared of myself.
03:12 The way I was treating myself,
03:14 the way I was talking about my body,
03:16 it breaks my heart to think that's who I was,
03:20 and it was really heartbreaking for me to know that.
03:24 I hope I never -- I just don't want anyone to feel
03:26 what I feel or has walked through.
03:30 -I feel like you --
03:32 this can't not be an emotional carpet for you.
03:35 What are you feeling right now, and why?
03:38 -I'm very nervous.
03:40 This has been exciting, but a little overwhelming,
03:42 to be honest.
03:43 I think I am still, like, a little shaky,
03:45 but I'm excited to be here,
03:46 and I'm happy that it's gonna be released, so.
03:49 -Really quickly, anyone struggling at home
03:52 who may be watching and going through something similar,
03:54 who may feel like their darkest days are still ahead,
03:57 what would you say to them?
03:58 What would you encourage them with?
03:59 -I would encourage them to be not afraid to seek help,
04:03 but at the same time, learn about it,
04:06 understand what it is, 'cause once you have the knowledge
04:08 of what you're going through, you're less afraid of it.
04:11 So I would say learn as much as you can.
