00:00 As I said on Monday, there are credible reasons to believe that agents of the government of
00:12 India were involved in the killing of a Canadian on Canadian soil.
00:22 That is something of the utmost and foundational importance in a country of rule of law, in
00:31 a world where international rules-based order matters.
00:37 We have rigorous and independent justice systems and robust processes that will be on course.
00:48 We call upon the government of India to engage with us to move forward on getting to the
00:54 truth of this matter.
00:55 So far, none of the US, UK, Australia or New Zealand have echoed the allegations about
01:01 India.
01:02 We know you gave a heads up to some of those world leaders.
01:05 Did you ask them to publicly condemn New Delhi?
01:11 As a country of the rule of law, we have an obligation to ensure that those processes
01:19 unfold in a rigorous and independent manner and that is what we are ensuring.
01:23 At the same time, we are ensuring that Canadians stay protected and that we stand up for the
01:31 international rules-based order.
01:34 That is something that we are doing and it's something we are doing alongside our allies.
01:39 But so far at this point in time, you seem to be alone in echoing these allegations.
01:42 Are you concerned that Canadian allies have not gone nearly as far as you in this situation?
01:48 We're standing up for the rules-based order.
01:50 We're standing up for the rule of law.
01:52 We're highlighting how unacceptable it would be for any country to be involved in the killing
02:01 of a citizen on their own home soil.
02:05 And that's something we will continue to stand for.
02:09 Prime Minister, since you made your statement in the House of Commons the other day, some
02:13 of the reactions, some of the conversations have been about the quality of the evidence,
02:17 how much Canada has.
02:19 You said it was credible.
02:20 Can I ask you to characterize it just a little bit further about how extensive it is, how
02:25 solid it is, and whether you might ever share some of that with the public?
02:29 So how extensive is this evidence?
02:31 I think it's extremely important that as a country with a strong and independent justice
02:38 system we allow those justice processes to unfold themselves with the utmost integrity.
02:45 But I can assure you the decision to share these allegations on the floor of the House
02:50 of Commons Monday morning was not done lightly.
02:55 It was done with – or Monday afternoon was done with the utmost seriousness.
03:00 We have a rigorous justice system that will follow the required steps.
03:10 But I can assure you that the decision to share with Canadians these extremely serious
03:17 allegations on Monday afternoon was not done lightly.
03:21 If I understand correctly, are you suggesting that the evidence was extensive?
03:26 Is that what you're saying?
03:29 I'm saying – I'm repeating what I said on Monday afternoon, that there are credible
03:36 allegations that we need to take extremely seriously as Canadians and indeed as a world.
03:44 Did Prime Minister Modi confirm or deny these allegations when you talked to him about them?
03:51 As I said, I had a direct and frank conversation with the Prime Minister in which I shared
03:59 my concerns in no uncertain terms.
04:01 Hi, Prime Minister Tom Perry, CBC.
04:04 Can I ask you – you've been asked about this already, but India has suspended visa
04:08 services here in Canada.
04:11 Are we going to reciprocate?
04:12 Are you going to take some kind of action, a tit-for-tat action in this?
04:21 We call upon the Government of India to take seriously this matter and to work with us
04:31 to shed full transparency and ensure accountability and justice in this matter.
04:39 We are a country of the rule of law.
04:41 We are going to continue to do the work necessary to keep Canadians safe and to uphold our values
04:48 and the international rules-based order.
04:51 That's our focus right now.
04:54 And when the two Michaels were taken into detention by China, you were quite successful,
04:57 your government was quite successful in rallying international support for Canada.
05:02 It seems that countries are less eager to take as firm a stand on India.
05:08 Why do you think that is?
05:11 In the situation of the two Michaels, Canada grounded itself in the rule of law, in our
05:19 values, in upholding our international treaties and obligations, and demonstrated that as
05:27 a country of the rule of law, we will remain anchored in it.
05:31 That's what we did as a country and that's what we do on the international stage, whether
05:37 we're standing up for Ukraine or emphasizing the importance of the international rules-based
05:43 order in other contexts.
05:46 The rule of law is there to protect Canadians, it's there to protect all citizens around
05:53 the world, and Canada will always be crystal clear on our defence of that for the protection
06:02 and safety of everyone.
06:04 Hello, Prime Minister.
06:07 Joy Malvin from CTV.
06:08 I've got a question for my colleague in Ottawa and I have another question about Ukraine.
06:12 But first, can I ask you a couple of things about India?
06:16 Will you share the evidence?
06:18 And the other question about India is, can you tell us what kind of precautions that
06:23 Canada is taking, security measures at the High Commission in India?
06:29 First of all, Canada has a rigorous and independent justice system that we trust to follow through
06:37 the processes.
06:38 As a country of the rule of law, we will ensure that those processes are strictly abided by
06:44 and respected.
06:46 In terms of safety in Canada and safety of Canadians, we always take the safety of Canadians
06:54 extremely seriously, whether at home or overseas.
06:58 I can assure everyone that Canada is a safe country.
07:01 I continue to call for calm and for Canadians to remain true to who we are – open, respectful,
07:10 grounded in respect and trust in our institutions and our law enforcement and justice systems.
07:19 Canada is a safe country, a country that respects differences, a country that will always be there
07:30 to defend the security and well-being of our citizens, here in Canada or elsewhere around
07:37 the world.
07:38 We will continue to do so.
