00:00 Dolly Parton reveals the poignant reason she never had children with husband of 57 years.
00:05 Country singer Dolly Parton has revealed she's almost glad she never had children as she
00:09 shares the joint decision she made with her long-term husband Carl Dean.
00:12 Dolly Parton has admitted the real reason why she and long-time husband Carl Dean haven't
00:17 had children, despite being married since 1966.
00:20 The country singer explained that she's almost glad she never had children and reflected
00:24 on the progress of kids in today's current political climate, sharing that we're not
00:28 making any progress.
00:29 She said, "It seems like we're not making any progress, mostly because nobody's trying.
00:34 Nobody's willing to listen to anybody else.
00:36 Everybody already knows everything.
00:37 You're going to teach your children the same thing, whether it's right or wrong," she
00:41 added, before admitting that she already worries herself to death about her young relatives.
00:45 "Everything is out there.
00:47 Kids know everything, they see everything, they hear everything.
00:50 We have to discuss stuff," Dolly told Mojo magazine.
00:53 "I know this sounds like a selfish, awful thing to say, but I'm almost glad I never
00:57 had children.
00:58 I worry myself to death about my little nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews."
01:03 Reflecting on her and her husband's decision to remain child-free, she said, "My husband
01:08 and I, we just think of ourselves as each other's child.
01:11 He's my only child, and I'm his only child."
01:13 Dolly has previously addressed not having children in the past, telling Oprah in 2020
01:17 that she believes it was God's will and it allowed her to set up her book-gifting
01:21 initiative for young children, called Imagination Library.
01:24 She told the host at the time, "I didn't have children because I believed that God
01:27 didn't mean for me to have kids so everybody's kids could be mine, so I could do things like
01:31 Imagination Library.
01:33 If I hadn't had the freedom to work, I wouldn't have done all the things I've done.
01:37 I wouldn't be in a position to do all of the things I'm doing now."
01:40 However, in 2016, she told The Guardian that she thinks she would have been "a great
01:44 mother" but probably would have given up everything else due to her guilt at leaving
01:47 them to go on tour, for example.
01:49 "Everything would have changed," she said.
01:51 "I probably wouldn't have been a star."
01:53 Dolly and Carl's romance began when they met each other at a laundromat in Nashville
01:57 in 1964.
01:58 She had just moved to Music City from her family home near the Great Smoky Mountains
02:02 National Park in Tennessee after graduating high school.
02:05 "I'd come to Nashville with dirty clothes," Dolly told The New York Times in May 1976.
02:09 "I was in such a hurry to get here, and after I'd put my clothes in the machine,
02:14 I started walking down the street, just looking at my new home and this guy hollered at me,
02:18 and I waved.
02:19 Being from the country, I spoke to everybody, and he came over and well, it was Carl and
02:23 a husband."
02:24 The sisters of dating Carl, who owned an asphalt-laying company at the time, proposed to Dolly.
02:29 They wed on May 30, 1966, in a private ceremony at the Ringgold Baptist Church in Ringgold,
02:35 Georgia.
02:36 The 9-to-5 songstress opened up about her marriage in a rare interview more than a decade
02:40 after tying the knot.
02:41 "He's sort of shy and quiet," Dolly told people of her husband in April 1977.
02:45 "What we have together is so sweet and good that I never wanted to get jumbled up
02:49 with the other."
02:50 The esteemed songwriter has only been spotted out in public with Carl on a few occasions
