00:00 The Dolly Parton song Elvis sang to Priscilla Presley after their divorce.
00:04 Elvis Presley met Priscilla Presley completely by chance in 1959 when she was 14 and he was
00:09 24.
00:10 The two had a romance that was often questioned by the adults around them, primarily Priscilla's
00:14 parents, but in 1967, at the age of 21 and 32 respectively, Priscilla and her burning
00:21 love husband tied the knot.
00:22 By the time one of Dolly Parton's most famous tracks, written about a professional breakup
00:26 she experienced in her own life, was recorded, Presley and his young bride were facing a
00:31 breakup of their own.
00:32 In 1973, after the couple formally signed their divorce papers, they descended the steps
00:37 of the courthouse hand in hand.
00:39 Despite growing apart, it was clear the rock and roll icon still very much cared for his
00:44 ex-wife Priscilla, so much so that he crooned Parton's "I Will Always Love You" as
00:48 his undying promise of eternal affection to the former Queen of Graceland.
00:52 Talking to BBC Radio 2, the 9to5 singer admitted, "I talked to Priscilla not very long ago.
00:57 She said to me, 'You know, Elvis sang that song to me when we walked down the courthouse
01:01 steps when we got divorced.
01:03 He was singing to me, 'I Will Always Love You.'"
01:05 The pair would continue to remain close right up until his death.
01:08 Dolly Parton continued telling BBC Radio 2 about just how much Elvis Presley connected
01:13 with her hit "I Will Always Love You," saying that he wanted to release a version
01:17 of it himself, but she had to turn the offer down.
01:19 It definitely wasn't because she didn't like him as a person.
01:22 The Dollywood founder has made it clear that she respects the king of rock and roll, releasing
01:27 her own track titled "I Dreamed of Elvis" on her Rockstar album.
01:30 Instead, it was because Presley's manager wanted her to give up some of her publishing
01:34 rights.
01:35 Speaking to Dirty Magazine, Parton explained that she was unable to hand over the rights
01:39 to Colonel Tom Parker because he would own half of her song.
01:42 Ultimately, she decided to do what was best for her and her career, even though it was
01:46 emotionally devastating.
01:48 She continued, "I cried all night," but she admitted of her songs, "I expect them
01:52 to support me when I'm old and support her the track did, netting Parton at least $10
01:56 million in royalty fees since its inception due to her holding full copyrights," according
02:01 to Insider.
02:02 But there is one person Parton agreed to let cover the song, Whitney Houston.
02:06 The legend famously sang it in 1992, and its popularity only made "I Will Always Love
02:11 You" more lucrative for Parton, who joked that when Houston released her rendition,
02:15 "I had enough money to buy Graceland via Express."
02:18 The legends had a fair amount in common.
02:20 Elvis Presley was clearly enamored with at least one of Dolly Parton's songs, and she
02:24 had a lot of respect for him.
02:26 They also both had similar upbringings.
02:28 It may be the latter that has led Parton to say, "I always felt that we were kin,"
02:32 explaining that he was one of the people she related to most in her life, according to
02:36 the book Dolly on Dolly.
02:38 Interviews and Encounters with Dolly Parton that references a statement given to Playboy
02:42 in 1978.
02:43 Nevertheless, Parton has admitted that their paths never crossed, continuing, "Every
02:48 time you come in town, even if I was home, I just wouldn't go.
02:51 Something always kept me from going."
02:53 Reportedly, before the publishing rights issue ended the deal for Presley to record "I
02:57 Will Always Love You," Parton was planning to have a meet and greet with him for the
03:01 very first time.
03:02 She admitted to BBC Radio 2 that the papers hadn't been officially signed, but she was
03:06 planning to head to the studio to meet Presley and hear him sing his version the next day
03:11 before Colonel Tom Parker called her the night before and broke the news about the
03:14 copyrights.
03:15 Today, there's no evidence that the two musical legends ever met, they were just two talented
03:20 individuals who respected one another's work.
