Alexander Pey is talking about his project “Endangered Art Collectors” by Alec Pay Foundation, which was a special show at Art Cologne 2005. Alec Pay Foundation is a communication campaign with the mission to encourage art collectors to buy young art. Believe it or not. But people who can serve such excellent soups can do anything in this world. Interview is in German language.

00:00 I am Alexander Pai, Chairman of the Alec Pei Foundation.
00:04 This year, the Alec Pei Foundation has made it their mission to support and promote
00:08 endangered art collectors with a soup-dining as a solidarity message,
00:14 so that they get the strength and the courage to go back to the art cologne,
00:20 to buy young art and to be inspired again.
00:25 I am from Dachen, Erbe, and it is important to me that more and more artists
00:32 buy young art and that maybe tomorrow not only 2% of young artists can live from it,
00:38 but 3% or 4%.
00:40 I think it is very important to motivate people in this current cultural situation,
00:52 who want to contribute to the culture.
00:56 To contribute to the culture means for collectors to buy art,
01:00 so that there is movement again.
01:02 And of course this also impacts the artists,
01:05 because when collectors buy art, artists sell art,
01:09 and then they can work again.
01:11 Because it is a mutual recognition.
01:15 He gets the soup, he should feel good,
01:18 he should perceive this space as a space for communication,
01:21 he should be inspired and maybe reflect on himself and say,
01:25 "Yes, of course, I can spend 500 or 1000 Euros for an unknown artist,
01:31 not one of the super hyped ones."
01:34 With a little more money, we have the situation,
01:39 if my information is correct,
01:41 the sales figures have increased in the last two years in the art market,
01:45 but the numbers in the young market have fallen.
01:49 The collector has gone there and took more money into his hands,
01:53 and bought established values to secure his investment,
01:57 but he has neglected the young art, which can be an investment.
02:02 And it would be nice if the collectors could take courage,
02:06 if they go to the studios again, many do that,
02:10 and say, "I spend a little more money in this direction,
02:14 and buy risk-taking art."
02:17 Maybe with a little more fun, a little more joy,
02:20 not with the perspective that I have to bring the money back.
02:24 I would like the collectors to buy more young art,
02:28 and that you don't always see the top 100,
02:32 whom I treat, that they sell their paintings,
02:35 but when I go into the museum landscape,
02:38 I only see these 100 artists, and I think I always see the same pictures.
02:42 And it would be nicer if there would be a change,
02:46 if the exhibitions would be a little younger,
02:49 if you would say, "Let's exhibit more young artists,
02:53 to expand the spectrum."
