John Cena Vs. CM Punk was about the clean cut face of the company that the fans had tired of going up against the scruffy anti-hero who raged against the machine with the audience behind him. It's one of those rare feuds where WWE listened to their fans for the briefest moment and magic happened, as well as some of the most iconic moments in recent WWE history. SoCal Val is here to recount the tale in about 3 minutes.

00:00 Back in 2011, John Cena was the face that runs the place, but while the kids were throwing
00:03 up the "You Can't See Me" hand sign, the discerning wrestling fan was going, "What
00:06 do you mean?
00:07 He's literally everywhere.
00:08 You can't move for Cena."
00:09 They wanted someone to represent them, someone whose t-shirts didn't look like unicorn vomit,
00:12 someone who wasn't being forced down their throats.
00:14 Hardcore fans felt like their voices weren't being heard because even the overwhelming
00:17 chants of "Cena sucks" fell on deaf ears at WWE.
00:20 Enter the voice of the voiceless to drop pipe bombs, rouse the rabble, and give fans hope,
00:24 CM Punk, the spirit animal of many angry WWE fans.
00:27 The result, an epic feud between two polar opposites, the hero vs. the anti-hero.
00:32 This was wrestling Batman vs. Superman and so much better than the movie.
00:35 This is Fats Feud, Punk vs. Cena.
00:37 In 2006, WWE laid some accidental groundwork by casting CM Punk as an extra for Cena's
00:42 WrestleMania 22 entrance.
00:43 Punk was a Tommy Gunn toting mobster riding in Cena's gang.
00:46 Fast forward to June 2011 and CM Punk had dropped the Dillinger Act, become a name in
00:49 its own right, and was winding down his storyline with the New Nexus, while WWE Champion Cena
00:53 was battling with R-Truth and all his little jimmies.
00:55 It would be Raw guest host Stone Cold Steve Austin who would stomp his authority on proceedings
00:59 pitting Punk against Cena.
01:01 And with little help from Truth, Punk pinned Cena but he would have to overcome Rey Mysterio
01:04 at the one-off pay-per-view, capital punishment, and Alberto Del Rio in a number one contendership
01:09 battle all within a week to actually earn his shot at the WWE Championship.
01:13 Why anyone would want that spinner belt, let alone go through all that just to get it is
01:16 beyond me.
01:17 Meanwhile, Cena set Truth free from the feud in a match that really put the punishment in
01:20 capital punishment because it was hard to watch.
01:22 But that did mean Cena's check was cleared for Money in the Bank in July.
01:26 A couple weeks before the show, CM Punk would drop the first bombshell of the feud.
01:29 Not only was Money in the Bank where he would go after the title, it was the night his contract
01:32 expired.
01:33 Ooh, drama.
01:34 This sent the fans spinning like, well, you can guess, spinner belt.
01:37 Punk was their guy, the one they wanted to lead the company into the future.
01:39 But then again, him walking out with the belt would be the ultimate middle finger to a company
01:43 that never listened to its fans.
01:44 The clash was set and it would all be decided at Money in the Bank.
01:47 But the build was also an embarrassment of riches.
01:49 It had Punk vs McMahon, Vince vs Cena, WWE vs its fans, Johnny Ace vs the concept of
01:53 charisma.
01:54 Would CM Punk finally prove he was better than John Cena?
01:56 Could a tattooed, straight-edged, counterculture, nonconformist who made a name for himself
02:00 on the indies and was the star Vince never wanted beat the muscled up, clean cut, aw
02:04 shucks PG, chosen one and company man John Cena?
02:07 If Punk won, what would WWE do without a champion?
02:10 If Cena won, what would America do without a Chicago?
02:12 As if this wasn't enough, the feud would be launched into the stratosphere when CM
02:15 Punk broke the fourth wall and cut the pipe bomb heard around the world and all of YouTube.
02:19 Hey, Coke Cabana.
02:20 Heading into the match, CM Punk was so confident he was a better wrestler than John Cena, he
02:23 couldn't see himself losing.
02:25 Vince McMahon also seemed to agree and tried to call the whole thing off.
02:27 But good boy John Cena wouldn't allow it.
02:29 So after a confrontation, McMahon kept the match but threatened to fire Cena if he lost.
02:33 At Money in the Bank, CM Punk and Cena battled it out.
02:35 Punk was surprised that he couldn't just drop Cena as effortlessly as he dropped pipe
02:38 bombs.
02:39 McMahon, not one to take chances, tried to screw Punk with the help of John Laurinaitis,
02:42 but Super John wouldn't allow it.
02:43 In the end, Punk would put Cena to sleep and leave the WWE with the championship.
02:47 McMahon was furious.
02:48 The Chicago crowd was in full voice.
02:50 Fans were ecstatic.
02:51 So was Dave Meltzer.
02:52 He actually gave a John Cena match five stars and it didn't even happen in the Tokyo Dome.
02:55 On the next Raw, McMahon was all set to fire John Cena, but Triple H took over for Vince.
02:59 Trips tried to act conflicted, but we've seen him try to act before.
03:01 Ahem, the chaperone.
03:02 Ahem.
03:03 By the end of the night, Cena was champ again.
03:05 Fans clamored to see Punk show up at all the places he promised like ROH and the indies,
03:08 though he did make one appearance at a Comic Con.
03:10 His hiatus was short-lived.
03:11 Next thing you knew, Punk popped back up.
03:13 After just two weeks, another opportunity wasted.
03:15 Cena and Punk would battle at SummerSlam.
03:17 Both men brought their own titles, but neither would walk out with one.
03:20 Because though Punk won the match, it was Alberto Del Rio who would invest his money
03:23 in the bank free pace wisely and walk out as WWE Champion.
03:26 Such good sh*t, right?
03:28 Because while Del Rio may have cashed in, WWE didn't.
03:30 If WWE had just allowed Punk to miss SummerSlam and focus on a long-term build to WrestleMania,
03:33 this could have been one of the best feuds in the history of WWE.
03:36 Instead of a long-term epic, we got a short-term success.
03:39 But you can't take away that the hot build to money in the bank, the infamous pipe bomb
03:42 promo, one of the best matches in WWE history, and the fact that CM Punk actually took down
03:46 Cena and McMahon for the fans make this one one of the most meta and magnetic feuds in
03:50 recent WWE.
03:51 Thanks for watching.
