00:00 In the wake of CM Punk returning to WWE, it was reported that one of his issues with AEW
00:06 during the Brawl Out press conference was that he felt he was a bigger star than AEW
00:12 and apparently he's not alone.
00:15 And those people are just waiting out their AEW contracts to return to WWE because, reportedly,
00:22 they do not respect All Elite Wrestling.
00:33 On September 2nd, 2023, CM Punk was fired from All Elite Wrestling due to various backstage
00:39 issues but ultimately due to a backstage fight with Jack Perry at All In.
00:44 More on that later in this video because, as it turns out, Bryan Danielson led the hearing.
00:49 Just 84 days later on November 25th, 2023, CM Punk returned to WWE after a near decade
00:58 long absence.
00:59 I won't go into all the details about Punk's return and why it's so shocking - check
01:03 out Oli Davis' video on that in the video description down below - but suffice to say,
01:08 it was quite shocking.
01:09 The deal came about at the last minute.
01:10 It was Punk that reached out, not WWE.
01:13 Sean Ross Sapp said on a Fightful post show that the following Raw had to be rewritten
01:17 to find time for a CM Punk promo, and then PWInsider reported that the preceding Randy
01:22 Orton and Dominik Mysterio match went long so his promo was cut short.
01:26 But there was also a lot of talk about his backstage behaviour.
01:30 You know, because he was fired from his previous employer for his backstage behaviour.
01:35 Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio, "There was no major negativity backstage
01:40 at the Raw following Survivor Series."
01:42 Wade Keller of PWTorch added that Punk "approached everyone and was very nice and humble and
01:48 in a good mood."
01:49 Although he says one source told him that Punk "knew he kinda had to be".
01:53 You know, because of his backstage behaviour in AEW that got him fired, and because, well,
01:58 he spent the last 10 years talking about how WWE is rubbish and nearly killed him.
02:03 WWE clearly wanted the CM Punk signing to feel huge - which they should and have - with
02:08 reports that his merchandise has almost already sold out on WWEShop.com, and Sports Illustrated
02:14 are reporting that plans are in place for Punk to feud with Roman Reigns.
02:19 However first Punk will feud with Seth Rollins, which Sports Illustrated added could serve
02:24 as the main event for the opening night of WrestleMania 40.
02:28 It's important to note that Sports Illustrated report isn't that Punk will then feud with
02:32 Roman Reigns following Seth, just that "at some point, Punk will have a match with Roman".
02:38 Just make sure you make him look strong there, Punk.
02:41 Punk's first promo on Raw received mixed reactions, ranging from "let it play out"
02:46 to "that was disingenuous BS".
02:48 But one thing it was not was a shot at his former employer AEW.
02:53 In fact social media tried to claim that following the promo Punk did a "victory lap" - which
02:57 is what The Young Bucks did after the Collision broadcast following Punk's firing.
03:01 But Nick Housman of House of Wrestling is reporting that this is not the case.
03:06 He adds Punk is looking to move past the AEW drama "entirely" and has no plans to address
03:12 any of what happened there.
03:14 Keller adds in his PWTorch report that while Punk was on his best behaviour for the first
03:19 episode of Raw, the feeling was, "well, we'll see if this sticks in a couple of
03:23 months time".
03:24 But according to Dave Meltzer, it will be different this time.
03:29 When talking about Punk going back to WWE, Meltzer reflected on the All Out media scrum
03:34 that led to the major downfall in relationships between CM Punk, AEW and a lot of the company's
03:39 top talent like Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks, Jon Moxley and Hangman Page.
03:44 Meltzer said at the time but reiterated upon Punk's WWE return, "My take on it was,
03:50 he does not respect AEW."
03:52 He added that Punk felt in AEW he was a bigger star than everyone.
03:57 And on the difference between AEW Punk and WWE Punk, he says he's going to have respect
04:02 for people who made it in WWE.
04:05 And apparently it's not just Punk, as a lot of ex-WWE guys are like that.
04:11 Personally I've never understood the "ex-WWE guy" argument.
04:15 When WCW closed its doors and WWF signed a bunch of WCW guys to WWF contracts, they were
04:21 still seen as "ex-WCW guys" and they were made to wear t-shirts with "WCW" written
04:27 on them.
04:28 Some WWF guys didn't want to lose to the "ex-WCW guys" because they weren't WWF
04:33 guys and they are WWF guys so they made it in the WWF.
04:38 But those WCW guys were then WWF guys.
04:42 They'd been signed to WWF contracts.
04:45 They're your guys now.
04:47 If you push the "ex-WWE" argument to silly conclusions, you would say that the current
04:52 World Heavyweight Champion of WWE is just an "ex-ROH guy".
04:57 War Games was full of them.
04:59 Cody?
05:00 Ex-AEW guy.
05:01 Sami?
05:02 Ex-ROH guy.
05:03 Although he's a different person to El Generico.
05:05 Finn Balor?
05:06 Ex-New Japan guy.
05:07 Damian Priest?
05:08 Ex-Ring of Honor guy.
05:10 JD McDonough?
05:11 Ex-Progress guy.
05:12 Drew McIntyre?
05:14 Ex-WCPW guy.
05:15 You see how silly that all sounds?
05:18 That's 60% of the match.
05:20 If Kurt Angle ever debuted in AEW, he'd be labelled as an "ex-WWE guy" despite
05:25 spending more years in TNA than he did in WWE.
05:29 But to get a more pro wrestler take on this, I asked ex-WWE guy Claudio Castagnoli what
05:34 he thought.
06:01 To
06:27 me it's like, "Oh, you're gonna go to the new team and that's who you are.
06:43 You're not just gonna be like, 'Oh, why is this ex-Barcelona player on my team?'"
06:46 It's just like, "No, that's what you do to get better.
06:50 That's where you go."
06:51 You can watch that full interview using the link in the video description down below where
06:54 myself and Claudio talk about All In, a Kings of Wrestling reunion, the Continental Classic
07:00 and his thoughts on CM Punk going to WWE and talent jumping back and forth between companies.
07:06 Back to that Meltzer quote.
07:07 He said on Wrestling Observer Radio, "A lot of ex-WWE guys are like that, and those
07:12 are the guys who've been very negative in AEW."
07:16 He adds that these ex-AEW guys are just waiting to go back to WWE.
07:22 And I don't think you need to be Columbo to figure out who some of those guys are.
07:27 Right, okay, so a little bit of housekeeping.
07:29 Should be noted that much of what I'm going to talk about is roughly speculation.
07:34 It's putting two and two together and likely getting four but could also be getting five.
07:39 But the speculation is based on reports from the last year or so, which I will reference
07:44 as we go.
07:45 All the links for those are in the video description.
07:47 So yeah, the first person who comes to mind is Andrade El Hidalgo following the reports
07:51 last year of a backstage fight with Sami Guevara which led to El Hidalgo getting suspended
07:56 from AEW.
07:57 The issues between Guevara and El Hidalgo had been made public in interviews by both
08:02 men but the fight was said to be "very one-sided" and "like an RKO from outta nowhere" and
08:08 Guevara did not fight back.
08:11 Dave Meltzer said of the fight that Andrade "is trying to get fired" even though he'd
08:16 been told by his contemporaries that getting into a real fight backstage would not terminate
08:21 his contract.
08:22 See CM Punk and The Elite.
08:24 Andrade had also been publicly unhappy about his booking in AEW, which really came to the
08:30 forefront when Triple H took over WWE Creative - you're going to notice a pattern here - and
08:36 was bizarrely booked in a match with Preston Vance where his AEW contract was on the line.
08:42 This match was cancelled when he was suspended.
08:44 Andrade would return to be part of CM Punk's Collision roster - you'll also notice a pattern
08:49 with that too.
08:51 When Triple H took over the creative side of WWE there was a report that came out that
08:54 claimed WWE attempted to do some of the old contract tampering - calling guys in AEW who
09:01 used to work with WWE just to see if they could get out of their contracts and come
09:07 to work in a brand new utopia where my NXT children will get to fulfil their creative
09:14 dreams.
09:15 Swep Strickland was one of those guys, with Triple H wanting him back for the Hit Row
09:18 reunion that… well, never really took off.
09:22 Fightful Select reported this news, and added that Strickland instead passed on WWE to his
09:27 legal team because he wanted to stay in AEW.
09:29 William Regal, on the other hand, got out of his AEW contract and went back to WWE.
09:34 Remember when CM Punk blew off William Regal when he came into AEW and called him a WWE
09:40 stooge?
09:41 Lol.
09:42 One of the other names in that reported list of contracted wrestlers was Malakai Black,
09:45 who then later publicly announced that he did ask for his release from All Elite Wrestling.
09:51 Meltzer added on Wrestling Observer Radio that Black obviously wanted to go back to
09:56 WWE.
09:57 Black instead stayed with AEW, and eventually was moved to be part of CM Punk's Collision
10:02 roster.
10:03 It hasn't gone unnoticed by fans that Malakai Black has not had a lot of singles matches
10:08 in AEW.
10:09 In fact, his last singles match in AEW was in June 2022.
10:17 Meltzer explained that many of these ex-WWE guys didn't want to do jobs, aka, they didn't
10:22 want to lose.
10:23 He said a lot of people that came from WWE are very leery about doing jobs, and then
10:28 it becomes very difficult to book when you don't really want to do programs where you're
10:33 going to lose.
10:34 Black doesn't quite agree with this narrative, explaining on Instagram in September 2023
10:38 that he doesn't know why he's not had singles matches and claims it has nothing
10:43 to do with his injuries.
10:44 But one person who has been painted with the "doesn't want to do jobs" brush is Miro.
10:51 In 2022, Miro had four matches.
10:56 Four.
10:57 Roman Reigns looked across and said, "Dude, do some wrestling!"
11:01 He eventually returned to be part of, you guessed it, CM Punk's Collision roster.
11:05 He had been off TV for almost a full year.
11:09 Dave Meltzer reported via Wrestling Observer Radio that several pitches were being made
11:14 to him, but he kept turning them down because he didn't want to lose.
11:18 In their coverage of Survivor Series 2023, Bryan Alvarez revealed that the reason Miro
11:23 isn't in the Continental Classic - which many fans thought he might be - was because
11:27 "they don't want to pin Miro".
11:30 Meltzer clarified, "They don't want to ask him to do jobs."
11:35 And people in the tournament have to.
11:37 Now, we've made a lot of connections here.
11:39 We've used a lot of the same phrases.
11:41 When Triple H took over creative, CM Punk's Collision roster, Dave Meltzer said on Wrestling
11:46 Observer Radio they want to go back to WWE.
11:48 But this time, we can actually get a return to WWE quote from someone else.
11:54 Because Miro's bloody wife said it was going to happen.
11:56 When the reports of Miro not wanting to lose and kept shooting down pitches for him to
12:00 return to television were doing the rounds, CJ Perry - who is also now in AEW - told a
12:05 local radio station in December 2022 that "I'm sure Rusev Day will make a return
12:10 in WWE at some point.
12:12 Let's be honest, we know that everyone always returns back to WWE at some point."
12:17 Isn't that right, Phil?
12:19 I don't think it's crazy to look at the names Malakai Black, Andrade and Miro and
12:25 not tie the red string together and say, "they probably don't want to be there".
12:29 They're all considered to be the "problem kids" that got put together with the "other
12:34 problem kid" in CM Punk for Collision.
12:36 Optics count for a lot.
12:38 Meltzer says that while Swerve Strickland and Keith Lee turned down the contract tampering
12:42 calls "a lot of guys wanted to leave.
12:45 The guys who signed there, if they're guys who really want to be in WWE but just got
12:50 fired and everything and can't wait to get hired back, I don't know that those guys
12:55 have been that beneficial."
12:57 And Meltzer is sort of right, but not all ex-WWE guys have this mindset.
13:04 We already saw earlier in this video the clip of Claudio Castagnoli telling me about his
13:08 thoughts on the ex-WWE guy mindset, and Meltzer noted when talking about ex-WWE guys not wanting
13:14 to do jobs and lose, that Bryan Danielson is an exception to that rule - who has gone
13:19 out of his way to put over AEW guys like Daniel Garcia and MJF.
13:24 He will likely also be taking a few losses in the Continental Classic.
13:28 And their Blackpool Combat Club running mate Jon Moxley doesn't have this mindset either,
13:33 and seemingly didn't want to say anything about CM Punk's return to WWE when asked
13:38 by ComicBook.com because, well, you don't want to hear his thoughts apparently.
13:43 He said, "You don't want to hear what I think."
13:46 I didn't see it.
13:48 You do not want to know what I think.
13:52 Fightful Select report that Bryan Danielson was actually part of the disciplinary committee
13:56 that ultimately decided to terminate Punk's AEW contract.
14:00 Sean Ross Sapp writes, "When asking sources on the AEW roster about his inclusion, one
14:05 called him 'an appropriate moral compass who exemplifies objectivity' and said that
14:11 he effectively 'headed up' and was the face of the disciplinary committee."
14:16 Fightful Select add that Danielson addressed the AEW locker room after Punk's firing
14:20 and cited the positives that CM Punk brought and his longstanding friendship with Punk
14:24 and said that it was a decision that had to be made.
14:28 Danielson himself tweeted on November 28th, just days after Punk's return to WWE, "My
14:33 dad always told me, 'The right thing is often the hardest thing to do.
14:37 It won't make the most money, it won't always be the most popular, but it's still
14:41 the right thing.'"
14:43 Sean Ross Sapp added on Twitter that he was told Danielson told the AEW locker room this
14:47 "almost verbatim".
14:50 So what have we learned today?
14:52 When AEW launched, it was seen as a place where guys can go and get pushed properly.
14:56 A lot of guys and girls saw that AEW was this hot new product and had a lot of excitement
15:01 about going over to this new company for some fresh match-ups.
15:04 And those who got fired by WWE found a new home where they could work and get paid.
15:10 Fans were excited for Miro, Malakai, Black and Andrade getting pushes in AEW because
15:15 they never got those same opportunities in WWE.
15:19 But that mindset has to go both ways.
15:22 If, like Meltzer claims of CM Punk, you think you're a bigger star than the promotion
15:27 you're working for and you only respect those that made it in WWE and really you're
15:32 just wanting to go back to WWE, it's going to create dissension, tensions and problems.
15:40 Some of these ex-WWE guys have had stop-start pushes, lack of TV time, minimal stories,
15:46 Black, Miro, Andrade.
15:48 But some other ex-WWE guys have become major players on AEW television.
15:53 Swerve, Moxley, Danielson, Adam Cole, Claudio Castagnoli.
15:58 And to go back to that ex-WWE guy argument, maybe it's less of an ex-AEW guy mindset
16:04 and more of a "I'm a bigger star" mindset.
16:08 And likely we won't see the same AEW dramas from CM Punk in WWE because he respects those
16:14 that work there and won't have the "I'm a bigger star" mentality.
16:19 Because as we've always been told time and time again, no one is bigger than WWE, and
16:26 everyone goes back.
16:28 Meltzer noted when talking about Miro not wanting to do jobs, "If I'm Tony Khan at
16:32 this point, given everything that's happened and the wife of one of the wrestlers goes
16:35 and says, 'Essentially everyone goes back to WWE,' it's kind of like, 'Why waste
16:40 my time pushing this guy?
16:42 I've got a hundred guys on the roster who want to be here, and now you've got these
16:46 guys who want to be in WWE.'"
16:49 So at the end of this video, ask yourself the question, what would you do in Tony Khan's
16:55 situation?
16:57 And while you're asking yourself that question, why not click the video on screen right now
17:00 to watch Oli Davis' deep dive into the history of CM Punk in WWE, and why he might
17:05 have sold out by going back.
