00:00 Seth Rollins thinks CM Punk is a cancer, Jon Moxley didn't want to deal with Punk's
00:05 dumb S-word in AEW, and Roman Reigns might've never forgiven Punk for one comment he made
00:11 all the way back in 2014.
00:14 I'm Oli Davis asking, why does the Shield hate CM Punk so much?
00:25 CM Punk admitted in his first promo in a WWE ring in almost 10 years that he finally feels
00:31 like himself again.
00:32 He's with his family.
00:34 He's home.
00:35 But as anyone who's spent time with their family at home over Thanksgiving or Christmas
00:39 will tell you, that brings with it loads of negative feelings and arguments.
00:44 Now I don't want to hear you rank Strictly Come Dancing contestants in order of who you
00:48 want to have sex with the most, Uncle Ian.
00:50 Grandma is sitting right next to you.
00:52 The chief amongst those is Seth Rollins.
00:55 In backstage negative feelings with CM Punk kind of way, not who Uncle Ian wants to have
01:00 sex with.
01:02 Because that's Angela Rippem.
01:03 Sports Illustrated have reported that Punk's first major WWE feud will be against Rollins,
01:08 which started getting built the same night Punk made his return at Survivor Series 2023.
01:13 Rollins followed up by calling Punk a hypocrite on Raw, which Punk seemingly referenced in
01:18 his return promo, saying how not everyone was pleased to see him back.
01:22 But that's not the only seed Punk planted.
01:25 Also in that interview, Punk referenced a wise man who had once told him that to get
01:30 what he truly wants from WWE, a WrestleMania main event, he'd have to leave and come
01:35 back.
01:36 And as Dave Meltzer writes, that wise man is Punk's former WWE manager Paul Heyman,
01:42 the current manager of the biggest star in the company, Roman Reigns.
01:48 According to Meltzer, Reigns vs Punk is the obvious ultimate destination.
01:53 Obvious ultimate destination, title of your next premium live event.
01:56 But the plan is to take a lot of time before getting there.
01:59 But there is concern behind the scenes that the longer WWE waits, the higher risk Punk
02:04 will get injured or get himself fired.
02:07 One major star who saw the situation said that they'd better get there within six
02:10 months because of the injury risk or uncertainty with Punk.
02:14 But let's fantasy book the scenario where CM Punk doesn't self-destruct in WWE.
02:18 He'll feud with Rollins first, potentially main eventing night four of a buy one get
02:23 one free extravaganza, and then go onto a storyline with Roman Reigns.
02:27 That means, in the space of two years, Punk would fight, and possibly beat, all three
02:32 former members of the Shield for world titles.
02:36 Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship in August 2022, Seth Rollins for his World
02:41 Consolation Weight Championship in early 2024, and then Roman Reigns after that.
02:47 It's a fitting series of major feuds for his return, as, according to Punk at least,
02:53 HE IS THEIR FATHER.
02:55 He says he created the Shield.
02:58 On arguably the most impactful wrestling shoot interview ever released, CM Punk's 2014
03:03 appearance on Colt Cabana's Art of Wrestling podcast, Punk claimed "the Shield was my
03:09 idea".
03:10 But, apparently, heading into Survivor Series 2012, head WWE writer Eric Pankowski told
03:15 Punk they wanted him to have a faction, pitching Big Show and Daniel Bryan as its members.
03:20 Punk didn't like the idea, but said he'd be willing to do a heel faction if it helped
03:24 elevate some younger talent in FCW, which was WWE's developmental promotion before
03:29 NXT.
03:30 The names he chose were Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Chris Hero, who was called Cassius
03:38 Ohno in WWE, whom Punk had known from his days in Ring of Honor.
03:42 WWE accepted on one condition.
03:45 They don't need a hero.
03:47 They wanted Roman Reigns.
03:49 They came to me and they were like, 'what about Roman?'
03:51 It wasn't my heel to die on.
03:53 I said, 'sure, because it made sense to me.'
03:56 Punk never originally wanted Reigns in the Shield.
03:59 Remember that for later.
04:00 Seth corroborated Punk's claim in a 2019 appearance on Edge and Christian's Pod of
04:04 Awesomeness.
04:05 Punk was looking to help turn the main roster around, so he wanted to get us in there, us
04:10 being myself and Ambrose and I think maybe Cassius Ohno/Chris Hero, but I'm not sure.
04:15 But the company loved Roman from the get-go, and for all the right reasons.
04:20 Moxley revealed the same at Starrcast 4 also in 2019, confirming the Shield were meant
04:25 to be a stable for Punk, and that they used to travel on his bus early on, where he would
04:29 give them advice until WWE split them up on the road.
04:33 Punk didn't only create the concept of the Shield, he directly mentored Rollins, Reigns
04:38 and Ambrose in their very beginning.
04:41 But like all good student-teacher narratives, the students would eventually seek to defeat
04:45 their master.
04:47 Because shortly after those 2019 interviews, we got our first public falling out between
04:51 Punk and a member of the Shield.
04:54 Late 2019 was a bad time for Seth Rollins.
04:57 He would settle arguments on Twitter by talking about how much money he had in his bank account
05:01 despite being a babyface on screen.
05:03 And in October that year, he beat The Fiend in one of the worst creative decisions ever
05:09 made, causing fans to turn against him.
05:11 Presumably trying to get excitement around him again in November ahead of that Punk WWE
05:16 return we don't talk about, hosting WWE Backstage on Fox, Seth started calling out
05:21 Punk for a fight on Twitter.
05:24 Punk chose to respond with a promo on WWE Backstage.
05:28 This isn't the show where you shoot your ankles.
05:30 Seth needs to stop tweeting and realise that sometimes it's better to be viewed as the
05:34 fool and shut your mouth, or open your mouth and remove all doubt.
05:39 You're not doing yourself any favours.
05:41 Go search for relevancy somewhere else, Seth.
05:44 Seth responded on Twitter with "Hell of a response" eyes looking up sarcastically
05:49 emoji.
05:50 Coward.
05:51 Rollins later said in an interview he was just trying to coax Punk back into the rig.
05:56 But then, in February 2023, Seth's comments to Nick Houseman suggested something had irreparably
06:03 changed between them.
06:30 A week later, Rollins explained to Fox Sports Radio why he now sees Punk as a cancer.
06:58 The month after Seth's cancer comments about Punk, another former Shield member came out
07:17 against him.
07:18 AEW's Summer of 2022 was a mess.
07:21 Punk had to vacate his AEW World title shortly after winning it from Hangman Page, so the
07:26 ever-dependable Jon Moxley stepped in as interim champ.
07:29 The storyline saw Mox squash Punk in his return match, which built to a longer rematch at
07:35 All Out, where Punk won back the title.
07:37 Dave Meltzer would later report that Punk agreed to those plans, but then AEW got a
07:42 legal letter saying he "wasn't down with it and wasn't doing it."
07:47 Punk only came in when Tony Khan put his foot down.
07:50 In response to Meltzer's report, Punk did the 2023 version of a shoot pipe bomb, posting
07:55 a long piece of text on his Instagram story - claiming he wasn't clear to wrestle yet,
08:00 that Meltzer and Chris Jericho were liars, that Mox said he wouldn't lose to him, and
08:05 "most shockingly, he'd never seen a Rocky movie" - which was what the Mox storyline
08:09 was based on.
08:10 Fightful reported this caused "significant heat" between Moxley and Punk backstage,
08:15 and if AEW had to choose between them, they'd go for Mox.
08:19 But why believe Fightful when Mox himself went on his real-life wife Renee Paquette's
08:23 podcast to shoot on Punk's social media post?
08:27 It's f***ing annoying.
08:28 Just because somebody said some stupid s*** on social media, that's not news.
08:32 But it is, and it's become a thing.
08:34 I don't want to get dragged into this dumb s***.
08:37 I could f***ing unload on a lot of f***ing people right now.
08:40 When I start getting dragged into this s***, it tempts me to do that.
08:43 But I'm not going to f***ing sink to that level.
08:45 I don't want any negative bulls***.
08:48 I will say this, and I hate to say it because I don't think I've ever said anything
08:52 even remotely negative about AEW, but I will say this.
08:56 As an observer, I spent 8 years on the indies, a couple of years in WWE developmental, 8
09:02 years in WWE.
09:03 I have never seen so much bulls*** drama in one place in my entire f***ing life.
09:11 It's important to note how rare it is for Moxley to say something publicly like this.
09:16 That's how much Punk's behaviour must've gone into him at the time.
09:20 But maybe there's also a long-gestating underlying cause to Seth and Moxley's heat
09:25 with Punk.
09:26 Maybe it's that Punk inadvertently upset their Big Dog Shield team mate many, many
09:31 years ago.
09:33 And here we get to it.
09:34 The potential rosebud in the CM Punk/Shield drama.
09:37 The throwaway line that might've accidentally caused a decade of hate.
09:42 Why Roman Reigns doesn't like CM Punk.
09:46 When it was first being reported by House of Wrestling that Punk might return to WWE,
09:50 Fightful reported "There is a very big elephant in the room in that both Seth Rollins and
09:55 Roman Reigns have verbalized in the past that they aren't fond of Punk.
10:00 Most people on both sides believe there would need to be fences mended there in order to
10:04 make a successful return happen."
10:06 Roman had shot on Punk two years earlier, in 2021, during an interview with Complex,
10:11 when he was asked about a Punk return.
10:12 "On a personal level, it doesn't do anything for me.
10:15 That's not going to elevate me at all.
10:17 He's older now.
10:18 I haven't really seen a full match.
10:20 I've seen a clip or two.
10:22 And to me, a step or two has been lost.
10:24 Then also, he got his whooped in the UFC.
10:26 I don't think anybody really believes someone 200 pounds soaking wet with no explosive bone
10:31 in their body could ever really do anything to me."
10:35 Sure, maybe just a kayfabe badass response from Roman in character.
10:38 Or maybe it masks a deeper-held dislike of Punk, which once again can be traced back
10:43 to the shoot interview that is still having ripple effects today - the 2014 Art of Wrestling
10:49 Podcast.
10:51 Despite starting 2014 incredibly hot, equaling the Royal Rumble's elimination record - a
10:56 match most fans wanted him to win - the rest of the year went downhill for Roman Reigns.
11:01 Seth turned on him in June, breaking up the Shield.
11:04 Reigns was pushed hard into the main event, which started to turn fans against him.
11:08 And then he required surgery in September, taking him out for the rest of the year.
11:13 By the January 2015 Rumble, which he won, he was getting booed heavily.
11:18 And it might have been somewhat fuelled by a story Punk told on the Art of Wrestling
11:22 Podcast just two months beforehand.
11:25 Punk spoke about his 3-on-1 handicap match against the Shield at TLC 2013, which Punk
11:30 won.
11:31 He started planning out the match, but "every two minutes, someone new was coming up to
11:35 me.
11:36 'Hey, you gotta make Roman look really strong.'
11:38 So I got sick of Michael Hayes and everybody else coming up to me, people who aren't
11:43 even involved in the match, going, 'Hey, you're making him look really strong, right?'
11:47 And I finally said, 'You know what?
11:49 You know what would make them look really strong?
11:51 If they beat me.
11:53 Because three guys can't beat one guy.
11:55 That's f***ing dumb.
11:56 But no, no, Vince wants you to go over.
11:58 Okay.
11:59 But, but, you gotta make him look-Goddammit, I f***ing get it.
12:02 I know how to do the job.
12:03 Shut the f*** up."
12:04 Rather tragically, Punk wasn't criticising the Shield or Roman.
12:08 He was criticising an objectively terrible creative decision, which was a major gripe
12:13 with WWE at the time.
12:14 But those comments, along with Punk revealing he originally wanted Chris Hero in the Shield,
12:19 not Reigns, were made at the exact same time fans were starting to turn on Roman.
12:24 Make Roman look strong confirmed what many people were feeling - that management were
12:29 pushing Reigns down fans' throats.
12:32 And it became an unofficial catchphrase for the anti-Roman movement.
12:36 Perhaps in Reigns' mind, Punk indirectly fuelled the next five years of crowds booing
12:41 him.
12:42 But, as they say, this is the pro wrestling business, not the pro wrestling friendship.
12:47 Many, many wrestlers who hate each other have still gone on to work matches, probably many
12:52 more than we'll ever know.
12:53 They're professionals.
12:54 They do a job very well to make money.
12:57 I'm sure everyone's got people they don't get along with at work, but they still do
13:01 the job.
13:02 Pro wrestling, despite all its pyro and ballyhoo, is the same.
13:07 So this heat won't stop Punk and the Shield working together.
13:10 Punk already worked a programme in AEW with Mox, and he'll work his first WWE feud with
13:15 Seth Rollins.
13:16 They don't have to like each other to work together.
13:19 And, as Roman himself also said in that 2021 interview with Complex, "If our audience
13:24 wanted to see me vs Punk and they were clamouring for it, couldn't shut up about it, and all
13:29 the stars aligned, as a businessman and as a performer who was trying to seek out the
13:34 very best for the audience and try to captivate, I wouldn't say no."
13:38 What do you think of the Shield and CM Punk?
13:40 Let me know in the comments.
13:41 And go watch me list every time CM Punk shot on WWE before he returned there.
13:46 Turns out, really recently.
13:48 He was doing it just last year, over on partsFUN though.
13:51 (upbeat music)
