00:00 Hello and welcome to the WrestleTalk News, I'm Luke Owen and this is wrestling news.
00:12 And like WWE pay-per-view since WrestleMania, we've got a double top story.
00:17 Our first top story looks at last night's NXT where Raw's Becky Lynch took on Tiffany
00:21 Stratton for the NXT Women's Championship.
00:24 Integration of main roster talent into NXT has been a huge success for the developmental
00:27 brand in the most recent months - not just names like Baron Corbin, Dana Brooke and Musta
00:31 Farah Lee moving back down to the Performance Center, but even Judgment Day's Dominik
00:35 Mysterio winning the North American Championship.
00:38 It has massively helped boost the show's ratings.
00:41 And now we can add another member to the main roster… members of NXT title holders, as
00:48 Becky Lynch beat Tiffany Stratton to win the NXT Women's Championship for the first time.
00:54 This match came about because Stratton accidentally mentioned Lynch's name in the list of former
00:58 champs - because Bex has actually, amazingly, never won the belt before.
01:02 And it's been reported by places like BWE that Becky vs. Tiffany was on the cards following
01:07 Stratton being shown in the crowd at Payback and on Raw.
01:09 And the feeling is this will be a program that will continue to eventually put Tiffany
01:13 Stratton over - much in the same way that Dolph Ziggler winning the NXT Championship
01:17 was a way to put over Braun Breaker in the end.
01:19 What did you think of Becky winning the NXT Women's Championship?
01:22 Let me know in the comments down below.
01:24 But before we get into our other top story, the topper story if you will, let's talk
01:28 about this meme that was doing the rounds over the weekend.
01:31 It's a tunnel from Epcot at Disney World that serves as the entrance for the park's
01:35 mascot Figment, and at a new meet and greet function, the purple dragon has taken a stumble
01:40 and fallen out when exiting the tunnel.
01:42 The videos were shared by Disney Park fans and they all went viral, and several wrestling
01:46 fans jumped on the bandwagon to point out that the tunnel looks a lot like the old AEW
01:50 Dynamite tunnels that Heels and Faces used to walk out of, and while according to Fightful
01:55 Select the reason they look so similar is because "they're the same tunnels".
01:58 Yeah, those are the same tunnels from Dynamite.
02:04 Or perhaps not, because speaking of Disney, WWE's TV rights for Smackdown are coming
02:09 to an end relatively soon, and Disney might be one of the only parties interested in picking
02:15 up the rights.
02:16 WWE moved Smackdown from the USA Network to Fox in 2019 in a huge billion dollar deal
02:21 for the company.
02:22 It was the biggest platform Smackdown has ever had, and for the first time ever, the
02:26 blue brand was actually the A-Show of WWE.
02:29 The debut episode was notable for Brock Lesnar beating Kofi Kingston to win the title, the
02:34 debut of Cain Velasquez and an on-screen appearance by Tyson Fury.
02:37 This was a huge part of WWE's negotiations with Fox, who also promised that Ronda Rousey
02:43 would be part of the show.
02:44 Since then we've seen Roman Reigns become a permanent fixture of Smackdown as he's
02:47 the company's top star, and the top star needs to be on the top show.
02:51 It also led to WWE getting some of its biggest ratings in years, with many Smackdown episodes
02:55 topping over 2 million viewers - way outpacing Raw and competition like Dynamite.
03:01 In fact some segments with the Bloodline have been watched by over 3 million people - nearly
03:07 double what Raw does in some quarter hours.
03:10 The WWE and Fox deal was for five years, and the quick mathematic nerds among you will
03:14 work out that that expires next year in 2024.
03:18 This is the same expiry date for AEW and WarnerMedia, which is why they've been in negotiations
03:22 this year to extend that relationship.
03:24 WWE will be heading into their negotiations with Fox now the Endeavor merger is complete
03:28 and football season has begun, but the rumour mill is already whirring that they might not
03:33 be as smooth as they were in 2019.
03:35 Talking about this on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that the new TV negotiations
03:40 are going to be headed up by Ari Emanuel, the new head of the merged TKO, and Nick KHAAAAN.
03:47 Khan was the man behind the Fox deal in 2019 and getting NXT onto USA Network to compete
03:52 against AEW Dynamite in the Wednesday Night Wars.
03:55 And when it comes to those new negotiations, Khan is looking for an increase in rights
04:00 revenue.
04:01 He told the Sports Journal last week, "You've seen bidding wars between Comcast and Disney
04:04 on things like Fox Assets, which ultimately went to Disney, and Sky, which ultimately
04:09 went to Comcast.
04:10 It does make one wonder how this might look down the road as both companies and as TKO
04:15 enters into those negotiations.
04:16 We think ratings, relevancy and revenue for both properties are off the chart.
04:21 And of course, we always want to grow that."
04:23 Meltzer notes on Wrestling Observer Radio that the belief is Raw and NXT will stay on
04:27 USA Network, although WWE are looking for a huge price increase for both those shows.
04:33 Meltzer said the company is looking to increase the amount from $465 million a year to around
04:39 $700 million a year.
04:42 That is of course for two shows.
04:43 Smackdown is just a one show deal for Fox, and WWE want to increase their price to around
04:48 the $300 million mark - a price that Meltzer has been told Fox isn't going to go for.
04:55 But there is one interested party.
04:57 According to Meltzer, Disney is interested in Smackdown.
05:01 But before you all cry out, WWE to Disney+ confirmed this is about TV, and while there
05:06 could be some Disney+ integration, Meltzer says Smackdown will probably end up on FX,
05:11 but it isn't out of the realm of possibility that they end up on ABC.
05:15 Interestingly, Meltzer notes that the ratings for Smackdown would drastically go down as
05:19 ABC doesn't pull in the same numbers as Fox does on Friday nights, but they have a
05:23 higher ad rate.
05:24 However according to Meltzer - and he's not the first person to report this since
05:27 negotiations between WWE and Fox have been talked about a lot this year - WWE are willing
05:33 to move Smackdown off Friday nights for the right deal.
05:37 While Raw has always been on Monday nights, Smackdown has always been a bit of a floater
05:41 in the TV schedule, previously being on Thursdays and even Tuesdays when it was on USA.
05:46 The reality is that Smackdown is on Fridays currently because that's what Fox wanted.
05:50 They're basically on the night that Network wants them to be on, says Meltzer.
05:54 And what if that night is Wednesdays?
05:57 Would Smackdown win up against AEW Dynamite on cable?
06:00 AEW have held steady being the top two or three, sometimes even the most watched show
06:04 on cable on TNT on Wednesday nights, but how much would the much bigger WWE hurt those
06:10 ratings?
06:11 We've seen in recent months that WWE doing PPVs on Saturday has hurt AEW Collision's
06:18 ratings when they run against it.
06:20 But it isn't just Disney that is interested in Smackdown though, as Amazon could also
06:24 end up being the new home for the blue brand.
06:26 And apropos of nothing, here is a photo from the New York Fashion Week of Triple H chatting
06:30 with Amazon's Jeff Bezos.
06:31 I'm sure that's just a coincidence, yeah.
06:33 I'm sure he was just there to see Maxine Dupree, yeah.
06:37 I'm sure that's it.
06:39 I mentioned earlier in the show that TKO was made official yesterday, the merging of WWE
06:44 and Endeavor which sees WWE and UFC under the same roof.
06:48 The big unveiling was done yesterday at the New York Stock Exchange, and you'd be forgiven
06:51 when looking at this picture that Vince McMahon was not present for it.
06:54 But it turns out, this dude is Vince McMahon.
06:57 I genuinely did not spot him the first few times I saw this picture on Twitter yesterday.
07:02 But that's not the only reason that Vince was in the news yesterday.
07:06 As this week's WWE Raw went through multiple changes, which is why there wasn't a lot
07:10 advertised for the show going in.
07:12 Fightful Slate broke down a few of the changes made just before the show went live, and Dave
07:15 Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that Vince McMahon made multiple changes to
07:20 the show.
07:21 And of course Vince, as Dave notes, Triple H himself was also making last minute changes.
07:25 In some cases though, one talent told Meltzer, they were for the better.
07:29 So yeah, Vince is back.
07:31 Again.
07:32 Even with the TKO merger and Ariy Emanuel outranking him, Vince will be in charge of
07:37 the wrestling side of things.
07:39 Fightful Slate report that changes included Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso segments being switched,
07:43 a match between Viking Raiders and Shelton Benjamin and Cedric Alexander being moved
07:46 to main event, and a match between Natalya and Zoey Stark being scrapped entirely.
07:50 One source told Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Slate, they felt bringing Natalya in for a
07:54 silent backstage cameo and scrapping her match was disrespectful considering how she stepped
07:59 up for the indie show when Becky Lynch could no longer make the trip.
08:02 Fightful Slate add that Vince was making changes to Raw as early as last Friday's Smackdown.
08:07 He was not present at the show, and all changes were made remotely.
08:11 And not announcing things ahead of time might have hurt WWE Raw when it comes to the ratings,
08:15 but not as much as Monday Night Football will have hurt.
08:18 The return of Monday Night Football did a monster rating of 22.6 million viewers across
08:24 ESPN, ABC and ESPN2, one of the highest ratings in years, and it meant that Raw only pulled
08:31 in 1.3 million viewers - the second lowest rating for the show in history.
08:36 Although the actual lowest rating was a compilation show, which means this edition of Raw, in
08:42 its illustrious 31 year history, is the lowest rated regular episode of Raw ever.
09:11 But now it's time for my NXT One Minute One Take, and we're doing things slightly
09:20 differently this time.
09:21 I actually haven't seen what I'm about to read.
09:23 This has been written by Pete.
09:28 So this might be the new way we do these One Minute One Takes.
09:31 I need to tell you that everything that happened on last night's episode of NXT in One Minute
09:35 One Take and seeing it for the first time...
09:39 Pete has written here something something Instagram.
10:01 This might be the new way we do these One Minute One Takes.
10:04 I now need to tell you everything that happened on last night's episode of NXT in One Minute
10:07 One Take and seeing it for the first time...
10:14 Ilya Dragunov beat Wesley to become the number one contender to the NXT Championship, with
10:17 Wesley being taken away in an ambulance following a war with Dragunov.
10:20 After last week's crazy ending with a feed being cut and OH MY GOD IS BON WAGNER DEAD
10:25 they announced this week he's got a minor skull fracture sounds pretty manageable.
10:29 Baron Corbin did a promo about it, and then a match is made between him and Bron Breaker
10:32 when they both turn heel on each other.
10:36 Damon Kemp, Charlie Dempsey and Drew Gulak beat Miles Bourne, Brooks, Jenson and Josh
10:39 Briggs, JC Jain and Theo Hall are becoming best buds, Lyle Valkyria beat Dana Brooke,
10:44 Dijak whipped a tree to intimidate Eddie Thorn and Dominic Mysterio and Carmelo Hayes are
10:54 fighting next week in potentially a title vs title match.
10:58 Tyler Bate beat Axiom, The Creed Brothers beat Edris, NFA and Malik Blade, Erick Erizoa
11:02 beat Nathan Fraser, Gigi Dolan brawled with Blair, Davenport and Bekulish became the new
11:06 NXT Women's Champion.
11:08 Oh man look at that!
11:11 No mistakes!
11:12 No no!
11:13 Dijak whipped a tree!
11:14 He whipped a tree!
11:15 He whipped a tree!
11:16 He sure did whip a tree!
11:17 Right anyway so I've got a fancy new phone everyone so I can take better photos and videos
11:26 from my old Instagram feed.
11:28 Actually what I've really got it for is when I have to do breaking news videos it doesn't
11:32 look like I'm just hanging out with Rob Van Damm.
11:33 So anyway I'm going to take a photo of myself and I'm going to post it on Instagram later
11:36 go and watch Board Game Club because I'm on it.
11:38 Anyway look here's me taking a photo and Pete's there as well.
11:45 Bye everyone.
