00:00 with a injury update just to confirm JC Horn did have the hamstring, so we'll
00:05 continue to evaluate the severity of that and the timetable of that. All
00:10 right, now that I've had a chance to kind of see the tape and obviously meet
00:14 with the coaches a little bit, just a quick summary. Um,
00:17 on defense thought we played well. A few comments on that first down. I
00:24 thought we were very efficient on first down, you know, won a lot of the first
00:27 downs, put them in a lot of third and long situations. Uh, so hence the two
00:33 for two for 10 on third down. So an 80% win by our defense. That's that's
00:38 really strong. Thought the effort was good all day. Um, you know, first game
00:44 of the season tackling, right? I'm sure 32 teams are saying tackling needs to
00:49 improve. So tackling was okay, but probably can get a little bit better
00:53 there. Um, one of the other weak spots where, you know, in the red zone
00:58 defense, we can be more efficient there. Better, better execution in red zone
01:03 defense. And then obviously, ideally, you know, we got the ball out a couple
01:07 times of it didn't come up with any. So just need a few need some turnovers on
01:10 offense. Um, positives were, you know, ran the football well, uh, thought the
01:16 old line played well, thought the old line protected. Well, we had some
01:19 pressure later in the game. You know, when we get in that past mode, they ran
01:23 a couple stunts. Um, but for the most part, I thought the protection was
01:27 good. You know, I thought we were, you know, subpar in the past game in
01:31 general. Um, you know, as far as chunk plays, you know, getting getting we
01:36 need more explosive plays. Uh, in the red zone, we were one for two. We had
01:41 that, obviously that fourth and one that we get stopped on in the first
01:45 drive that really ends up being like a turnover, right? I mean, you go for it
01:49 on fourth and one and don't make it. So we had three turnovers. Really, it
01:53 turns out to be four turnovers, which which is a negative, but in some ways
01:56 that's a positive, right? We're in that game. We're leading in that game, you
02:00 know, in the third quarter, uh, you know, with with those turnovers. So
02:04 that's a double edged sword. We got to eliminate those, but also there's some
02:09 positive to it as well. I will say on the turnover note yesterday I mentioned
02:13 you guys, it's not always what you appear like. One thing I'll say is like
02:17 on the first interception,
02:19 you know, I put a lot of that interception on me. We got in a bad
02:22 position. We got the O. P. I called and then so we're backed up and then we get
02:28 a delay game call and that delay game was 100% on me. I had a miscommunication
02:32 with Bryce. It was 100% that miscommunication was 100% on me and,
02:37 uh, you know, and it caused the delay game. So, um, puts us even more backed
02:43 up and put us in a bad position. So that one's on me. Um, and then, you know,
02:48 on third down, I thought early on, we did some good things on third down on
02:52 offense. Um, so there were some good signs there, but we still need to get a
02:55 little bit better on special teams. You know, uh, three penalties. That's
02:59 unacceptable. Other than that, I thought, you know, johnny punted well
03:03 and eddie eddie kicked well, you know, obviously on his on his kicks. Um, so a
03:09 lot of positive things to build on, but, uh, need to get a lot better as well.
03:13 So I'll open it up from there.
03:14 All right, let's start off with David Newton. Go to Mike K.
03:19 Yeah, coach, your wide receivers, I think we're had eight catches on 15
03:24 targets. Um, what was the issue there getting them the ball? And you look at
03:29 that as something that, um, you've got to figure out going moving forward.
03:32 Yeah, confident in our guys. Um, you know, we'll just have to do, you know,
03:38 we just have to execute a little bit better in all areas. So, um, just have
03:42 to execute better, have to put them in better position, have to execute better.
03:47 Uh, and I'm confident we will. And you mentioned the first interception. What
03:51 about the second when you looked at it? I can't tell you.
03:53 Um, yeah, the safety made a good, you know, bases, as I said, base is a good,
03:57 you know, he kind of snuck in there. Um, you know, I would say, you know, that
04:02 one too. Also, if I were saying it wasn't 100% on Bryce, there was a
04:07 little something in the play that broke down. There was a small breakdown in
04:10 the play that could have affected it. But again, we just have to execute
04:13 better overall. Thank you.
04:16 Yeah,
04:16 Frank. Um, I know you said that tackling could be better in week one,
04:24 but how concerned are you about the run defense at this point?
04:28 Um,
04:30 I feel good about, you know, the percentage of wins we had on first down,
04:36 you know, they have some dynamic, they have a dynamic run game. They're gonna,
04:39 you know, it's almost like you go,
04:42 you know, when you play some teams, they just got certain things. They're
04:46 gonna make their place. You play the Atlanta Falcons, they're gonna have
04:49 some explosive runs with those running backs with their scheme and how they
04:53 how they coach things up. So, um, we do have to, I think, you know, looking at
04:59 our game summary, we count explosive runs as anything over 10 yards. We had
05:05 five of those on offense and they had five on offense. So, uh, and we had a
05:10 lot of other wins on first down. So, uh, certainly want to limit that. I'm not
05:14 overly concerned about the run defense. I give a lot of credit to Atlanta and
05:18 how good they are on offense and thought we had a lot of first down
05:20 wins. And then I guess to follow up, what's the coaching point? Um, on Smith
05:27 Marset, uh,
05:29 the punt fielding within the five.
05:33 Yes. You know, we have, you know, we kind of have general principles that we
05:39 go by. I don't want to say what those are, you know, but, um,
05:44 you know, I don't want to say, you know, I'm public, you're gonna say what
05:47 those are. But yeah, those are, those are, you know, those go in the category
05:50 of decision making. And sometimes as a returner, you know, you got to make a
05:53 judgment call and his his was kind of right on the edge where it ended up was
05:57 probably a little bit inside of where we would like. But, you know, you got to
06:01 make the call in that moment.
06:02 Let's go to Scott Fowler, followed by Joe Person.
06:08 Yeah.
06:09 Hey, Frank, thanks for doing this. Two quick things. I'll ask him one at a
06:15 time. Uh, first one is just I wanted your comments on Frankie Lou Boo's
06:20 performance. He seemed like he was around the ball a lot as usual.
06:25 Totally. Um, you know, in all areas of the game, you know, run defense, um,
06:33 you know, as a, you know, blitzing the quarterback in coverage, just thought
06:38 he played a very good game.
06:39 And the second bait said in his press conference yesterday in the falcons
06:45 locker room that he basically knew y'all would try to get Bryce comfortable,
06:50 throw it very quickly and that he kind of jumped on those what he called
06:55 inside breakers and digs a few times because he was the way he kind of put it
07:00 was he was not too concerned about the deep ball. Um, do you think that's
07:04 something that needs to change going forward to get people off of your, you
07:09 know, your shorter slants and stuff?
07:11 You know, absolutely. Uh, you know, the deep ball always has to be a threat.
07:17 Um, you know, we went back and looked at it. Uh, we called, we actually called
07:24 more than I thought we did. We probably had four or five, maybe even six
07:29 potential deep shot calls. Um, you know, a couple of them, you know, we just
07:34 didn't execute on. There was one that we checked out of because they were
07:38 bringing a blitz. Um, but I think we, and then there was one that we, you
07:44 know, we read something and just went the other way, um, which sometimes
07:48 happens, you know, you see something and you see something you like over here
07:51 and you and so and it was good. So, um, so I felt like looking back on it, like
07:57 the shots, you know, that felt like we called enough to get down the field. We
08:02 just got to do, we just at the end of the day, really what you look at is the
08:06 plus 20 plays. There's two categories of getting the ball deep. There's the
08:10 plus 40 plays where you're throwing go balls on the outside and deep post
08:15 routes. And then there's the chunk of those deep plays over the middle or on
08:19 the side of those 2025 yard gainers. Obviously we didn't have any of either
08:24 of those. So that's not going to be acceptable. We'll have to, we'll have
08:27 to do much better there.
08:28 Thank you.
08:30 Frank, when we talked to brian after the game, he talked about last week
08:38 making a conscious effort to sort of leave his emotions and the business
08:43 side of it at the door is, you know, as difficult as that is. And he mentioned
08:48 speaking with Justin Houston about that. Wondered if you had any of those
08:53 types of conversations with brian during what was a difficult week for
08:58 him.
08:58 Yeah. So my approach with brian was listen, how I've gotten to know brian
09:04 is as I've said nothing but utmost respect and trust. So um I was prepared
09:11 to have a one on one conversation with him to, you know, ask him his
09:15 intentions, so on so forth. Um, but when he came out on Wednesday and
09:21 practiced that said everything I needed to hear. And so for me and my
09:28 approach was, I trust the man, I believe in him, I trust him. And when
09:33 he came out on Wednesday to practice that told me everything I needed to
09:36 know. And so I was going to proceed forward like that was his decision and
09:41 respect him and his process and allow it to play out.
09:48 Let's go to steve reed followed by stella Callahan. Dylan, I'm sorry, I
09:53 was trying to ask a quick follow up. Go ahead. Sorry. Um, on brian and sort
09:59 of that edge rotation yesterday,
10:02 gross mattos didn't play by any force maps. Um, Barno and johnson didn't play
10:09 at all. Is that something you might look at? Did you see any signs that
10:14 brian had tired out toward the end of the game?
10:17 No, it was an interesting flow of the game. I mean, you know where there
10:21 weren't a whole lot of drop back. There wasn't a whole lot of drop back
10:25 action. You know, they were running the ball play, you know, play pass. We
10:28 had, I don't know how many offensive play. I forget the number of, you know,
10:32 we had 79 offensive plays. I know they had a lot fewer. So, um, I didn't feel
10:38 like that was an issue. That's always a game by a great point though, joe, you
10:42 know, because obviously normally you do rotate a little bit more. And I think
10:46 in certain types of games you would, we might see that. But I don't think this
10:51 game lended itself to it.
10:52 Hey frank, a two part question. I'll give him, I'll give him both to you
10:58 because I think you can handle both of them. Um, how did, first of all, how
11:01 did, uh, how did bryce grade out in your mind with you guys? And secondly,
11:07 what did you think about the separation? The wide receivers were getting was,
11:11 did you see a lack of separation there?
11:15 I think bryce played well. Um, one of the other things I thought he did well,
11:18 I thought he threw the ball away a couple of times. I think he had
11:22 probably three or four throwaways where he's not taking sacks. You know, we
11:27 call to play, it wasn't there in the time it should be there and he got rid
11:31 of the football and threw it away. I thought that over the long haul, that's
11:36 going to help us as a team. It's going to help us stay in phase and not take
11:40 sacks. It's going to help him stay healthy. I just think that showed and
11:43 he's not, you know, worried about his stats. So, you know, those throwaways
11:47 don't help your stats, but they sure help our football team. And I thought
11:51 he did a great job with that. And I thought he threw the ball accurately.
11:54 You know, I thought he threw the ball accurately. Um, and like I said, you
11:57 know, we had to, we had the two interceptions, the one, the one I don't
12:01 put on him at all. But the second, you know, the second one was kind of a
12:04 couple of different factors. But sure, can we all get better? Can I get better?
12:08 Can bright? Yeah, we can all get better. But I thought overall he played, he
12:11 played solid football. Um, you know, and then receivers. Yeah, I think that, uh,
12:17 I think at times there were, uh, mingle ran a couple of really good routes.
12:23 Feeling ran, uh, you know, he ran one killer route. They actually showed a
12:28 coverage and that kind of took us away from it. And because you thought he was
12:32 going to be covered and he ends up beating it. I mean, ran unbelievable
12:35 route. Um, terrorists, you know, the first third down runs a great, you know,
12:40 we put in a little wrinkle on this third down the very first third down we
12:44 had. It was something we added late in the week and terrorists does a great
12:47 job on that. Um, and then there's other times we need to get better separation,
12:51 you know, there's other and there's other times where, you know, it's
12:54 physical day was a little bit more physical down the field on a couple of
12:57 throws than I think we're all comfortable with. But we got to, you
13:01 know, we got to find a way to still win from that and but confident in that
13:05 receiver group.
13:07 Hey frank, you just mentioned about how the falcons really didn't do a whole
13:11 lot of drop back passing. What did you feel about that secondary, like the
13:15 discipline to not bite down on some of those and then obviously with J. C. In
13:20 his situation, how confident are you and C. J. And Troy Hill and some of
13:25 those other guys at the corner spot? Yeah, very confident in the, you know,
13:29 in the depth, you know, in the depth in that room, that's an area that we felt
13:34 has been a strength. So, you know, hopefully J. C. Will recover quickly
13:38 and we'll get him back. But, um, confident in the depth of the room and
13:42 and you're saying to comment on our secondary the way we play the play
13:46 action stuff. Yeah, yeah, I thought it was, I thought it was good. They
13:50 obviously hit the, you know, the chunk play, you know, just threw it up the
13:53 pits. But, you know, I thought overall, um, overall solid.
13:59 You got time for one quick one, David, go ahead.
14:04 Yeah, coach, I was actually gonna ask about Troy and how you play, but I'll
14:08 ask another, um, do you expect to have chart back this week? And what does he
14:13 bring to that group?
14:15 Um, first of all, I thought Troy played well. Um, but yeah, I mean, if D. J. You
14:20 know, just depth, he's a playmaker. Um, you know, we were having a lot of
14:25 success with him in training camp, you know, and through the beginning of
14:28 season, getting the ball down the field with him. So a good connection between
14:31 him, Bryce. So add one more playmaker to the mix. Um, and and feel even
14:38 better about the room. I'm confident to that room. We're gonna make the plays
14:41 that we need to make. Um, you know, going forward, I give the falcons
14:45 credit for, you know, limiting, limiting that this weekend. Um, but
14:49 we'll continue to get better as we go around the league. There are a lot of
14:53 teams that did really well. Some speed receivers. You feel like the speed is
14:56 the one thing kind of missing from this group.
14:59 You know, I mean, hey, there's there's, uh,
15:02 there's a lot of different ways to, you know, to make plays. Certainly speed is
15:08 one of those ways. You know, you got a guy like Tyree kill, you know, it's 200
15:12 yards. I mean, he's just different, right? I mean, there's nobody. No team
15:16 has speed like that. He's in a different category all by himself. Um, so, you
15:21 know, other than that, our guys have plenty of speed. You know, you know, I
15:26 look at the way we run. I look at our receivers times. Um, you know, we'll
15:31 find ways to make plays down the field.
15:33 Thanks a lot. All right. Thanks, coach.
15:36 Yeah.
15:38 Yeah.
15:39 Yeah.
15:40 Yeah.
