23:58 like a villain of the week kind of thing with Bugsy here.

24:21 And yeah, I'm starting to really vibe with this crew,
24:25 you know, like Zoro, cool as a cucumber, always.

25:11 I can tell that it has a spirit of anime
25:13 and this is probably why a lot of people love it
25:16 'cause like, dang, this show has so much heart.
25:18 And even towards the end where you see
25:20 the relationship between Shanks and Luffy
25:22 and how he finally got his hat

25:40 And yeah, I really want him to get to the grand line
25:46 'cause like this kid has so much heart.
25:49 He believes in himself and you see the impact
25:52 of this kid's energy and how it affects
25:54 the people around him because he is so positive
25:58 and yet so powerful but isn't like egotistical about it.
26:01 He's just a good person.
26:03 And yeah, I'm thoroughly enjoying this.
26:07 I don't know how far down the line the stuff
26:11 with Shanks is, is something from the beginning,
26:14 is this something that's revealed towards the end?
26:18 'Cause you know how animes are like 22 minutes long,
26:21 so and they take like forever to reveal information.
26:24 So I don't know, but yeah, I liked it.

28:30 of like, you snitched too early, damn you.
28:33 But they've established the character well enough
28:36 that he's such a frightened dude
28:38 that he's just gonna be, naturally,
28:43 he's gonna, it makes sense that the,
28:47 how he got pushed into this corner, you know what I mean?
28:50 Like, it makes complete sense to me
28:52 that he would actually unveil that.
28:55 And it does make for an interesting conflict
28:56 of the journey that he might go on
28:58 'cause you could see him going down like paths
29:00 that do cause more resistance and put him more into,
29:05 not quite antagonists, but an obstacle
29:08 that our trio has to fight against, you know?
29:12 Or could be the path where he ends up becoming
29:16 so disillusioned by the Marines' conquest.
29:20 I hope that's the path that goes downwards.
29:21 Like, this is not at all what I thought it was gonna be.
29:24 And then decides to help out.
29:26 Either way, I think the performer is doing a really good job
29:29 because if the performer wasn't so good,
29:31 I wouldn't have bought that as much.
29:34 I might've been a little bit annoyed by the choice.
29:36 - Yeah, you feel bad for the guy, you know?
29:39 And he's in a compromising position
29:41 and he's just afraid, he's trying to make it through.
29:43 I imagine he joined the Marines
29:45 'cause in spite of all this fear that he has inside of him,
29:47 he wants to do the right thing.
29:48 He wants to be someone who is courageous.
29:52 And, you know, maybe he's on the wrong side
29:55 of things right now, but I hope for the development of him
29:59 that he gets that courageousness inside of him.
30:02 - And what I like too,
30:03 what this episode established really well,
30:06 when you compare it to something like Pirates of the Caribbean
30:08 which is, you know, like, oh, the pirates,
30:11 they're criminals,
30:16 but you never really get the sense of the bad guys.

30:21 Like they have like bad pirates in there
30:23 who are going up against other pirates.
30:26 And, but they still make the pirate life,
30:30 like it hones in so much
30:32 on the fantastical side of the pirates.
30:35 And the pirates only really seem to be an issue
30:37 for like other pirates in that franchise.
30:39 You know what I mean?
30:41 Where here, what I like, what they did with Buggy,
30:44 I got kind of like things that I liked about Buggy
30:46 and things I didn't.
30:47 What I liked that they did with Buggy
30:49 was like him and his crew
30:51 and the way they were torturing this town,
30:55 how they wrecked their whole town,
30:57 and then they were enslaving the people.
31:00 They really showed the truly sinister villainous side
31:05 of pirates.
31:06 So it's not just also showcasing that,
31:09 hey, you know, like our band of misfits,
31:12 our pirates in the season, the pirate life glorious.
31:15 Like, yeah, there's the fun side of it too,
31:16 the fantasy side of that,
31:18 but they're also showing us
31:19 that there really is like a really messed up side to this.
31:23 So I love that they included that.
31:26 And of course I love the power set of Buggy
31:31 and I wonder if every villain we encounter with superpowers
31:35 is all gonna be devil's fruit.
31:37 - Ooh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
31:39 - Some type of link there.
31:41 And maybe it is like, oh, it's an accurate depiction
31:48 of what Buggy is like in the anime or something.
31:54 Like maybe it is.
31:56 I didn't ultimately feel,
31:58 like when you do the setup of what Buggy looks like
32:03 and like clown pirate, it went, the performance,
32:07 like it's weird.
32:08 Where my conflict comes in is I feel like the actor
32:11 who played Buggy did a good job with the material.
32:14 Like he completely serviced it,
32:17 but I didn't feel like there was anything that,
32:19 it was exactly the path that you would expect
32:24 based off of, oh yeah, clown pirate guy.
32:28 I didn't really feel like there was anything
32:30 that unique to it.
32:33 - Specifically his portrayal.
32:34 - Yeah.
32:37 - Not the way he portrayed it,
32:38 but the depiction of what this character is.
32:41 That I felt like there could have been something
32:43 that was a little bit more fresh about it.
32:46 So he actually came down to being like
32:49 kind of a frustrating thing for me to watch,
32:51 a little annoying and not super entertaining
32:54 or even scary, you know?
32:57 And I could have used that for as much focus
33:00 as there was on him.
33:02 I think it's funny 'cause I remember saying earlier on,
33:05 I was like, oh, it's not, the performance isn't bothering me
33:07 'cause I'm used to watching this actor,
33:09 which I now know his name is Jeff Ward.
33:11 And I think that as the episode continued,
33:15 I became not conflicted,
33:17 but I held two feelings at the same time.
33:20 One was like, I enjoy watching this actor perform
33:22 in this goofy role because I've liked him in other things.
33:25 But at the same hand, watching the character itself,
33:28 I think that, and Grant,
33:31 I don't have the anime to compare against,
33:33 that it could have,
33:35 he didn't come across as threatening to me.
33:36 I was never like afraid
33:38 or thought this guy was like crazy or anything.
33:41 I mean, obviously he was crazy,
33:43 but I would never like, whoa, this guy's freaking nuts.
33:45 I never felt threatened by him.
33:47 And I think maybe part of that was the performance as well.
33:51 Yeah, I just, I thought the effects on him were really cool.
33:56 Don't get me wrong, I thought that stuff was awesome.
33:58 But maybe like a little bit more unhinged/threatening,
34:02 like when he was telling them to like laugh
34:04 or like, no, don't laugh.
34:05 Like I didn't get the sense that
34:08 outside of having these guys have powers,
34:11 that his aura in and of itself
34:14 was something that was threatening or scary.
34:16 - Yeah, that's a good way to put it.
34:18 Yeah, you said it much better than me.

34:21 - Yeah, I think like the power shouldn't make him scary,
34:23 the guy should make him scary,
34:24 and then the powers are the icing on top
34:26 of the fact that he's scary.
34:28 - Yeah.
34:29 - I think if they would have utilized or leaned into
34:32 the clown aspect of him more,
34:35 and then have that power thing
34:37 be an enhancement on the clown thing,
34:39 I think that would have worked a lot better.
34:40 So like maybe this guy was miscast.
34:42 I mean, I like the actor, but yeah,
34:44 we'll see what they go, what they do with him.
34:48 But yeah, I think ultimately
34:49 that's what I walked away feeling.
34:51 I thought the fights were really cool,
34:52 the powers were really dope, you know?
34:54 And especially like,
34:55 'cause that could easily have turned into like ridiculous,
34:58 like dumb, goofy territory.
35:00 But I don't know if it's the fact
35:01 that the effects were good,
35:02 or the story and characters were good,
35:05 or the fact that, I don't know,
35:08 I just think all of it together worked
35:10 when it easily could have gone into like,
35:12 this is goofy, dumb territory.
35:14 Maybe the knowledge that it's based on the anime
35:16 maybe helps that a little bit.
35:18 But yeah, overall that fight scene really worked for me.

35:31 - I feel like I've seen this like a billion times.
35:33 Yeah, and it was this little,
35:35 it was only annoying because it was so much of the episode.
35:40 You know, and I liked what it did
35:43 for our other characters though.
35:45 You know, like it spoke volumes to me
35:49 when Monkey D's hat got stabbed,
35:54 and I really felt that.
35:55 I was like, fuck.
35:58 (laughing)
36:00 Because the show did such a great job on emphasizing.
36:04 - How important a hat is.
36:05 - Yeah, by illustrating that whenever,
36:09 this guy's usually in a chipper mood,
36:11 or a ponderous or eager mood,
36:16 and the time he gets serious
36:19 is when you mess with the hat.
36:20 - Or his friends.
36:22 - That was established after.
36:25 Like they really made it clear,
36:26 like his mood switches when you mess with his hat,
36:29 and how much that means to him,
36:31 and the show's been doing such a good job
36:32 at showing us like where it comes from,
36:34 and you don't really know yet what the history is,
36:36 but clearly it's such an emotional attachment to him,
36:38 I'm attached to Monkey D.
36:40 So when the hat got stabbed, I was like, oh.
36:44 I was like, I've never felt that with an item.
36:47 (laughing)
36:49 Just getting struck like that.
36:52 It's like an animal, you know,
36:54 or something like that, and punctured it, you know?
36:56 And they put so much emphasis too,
36:58 that it's like an old hat, you know?
36:59 And I'm like, ah, damn.
37:01 So I thought they added such great weight with that,
37:03 and I guess seawater does, that is the--
37:06 - Weakness, I guess.
37:07 - Is it through swallowing,
37:08 or is it like just dipping him in it?
37:09 - I don't know, you just beat him.
37:10 - Yeah, just putting him in it weakens him,
37:13 and maybe that's the way forever,
37:16 'cause it seemed like he really knew that.
37:18 He said like, don't bother, it's seawater.
37:22 And for Buggy to just know that,
37:26 and the way he kind of just threw that line out there
37:27 would mean that Buggy would also be prone
37:31 to being vulnerable to that as well.
37:33 - Yeah, yeah, 'cause he recognized as soon as he stretched,
37:36 oh, he's bitten the same type of fruit that I have.
37:39 So by then, wouldn't know what his weakness is,
37:42 which is interesting, 'cause it makes me,
37:44 the more we watch it, that makes me more curious
37:46 about the lore behind this world.
37:47 Like, what is the deal with these fruits?
37:49 Like, where is Shanks and his people, you know?
37:52 What is going on with Zorro and his history?
37:56 And what is this grand line?
37:59 We'll find out eventually whether it's the end of the season
38:02 or 400 episodes from now.
38:05 - Do you think there's gonna be a romance with Zorro?
38:10 - I got that chemistry, that butting heads kind of chemistry
38:13 from those two, so.
38:15 - Well, I feel like Nami, she's supposed to have
38:17 that duplicitous quality to her.

38:20 da-da-da, but I think ultimately
38:21 she's gonna be on the good side.

38:23 - Especially toward that thing at the end
38:24 where they're using their snail Bluetooth.
38:26 Maybe it's not as bad as it looks.
38:28 Maybe that's just the cliffhanger they left us on.

38:35 - The guy, the head of the fucking gang, of the Marines.

38:54 making the sounds with it, it was the exact same sounds.
38:58 So I think the implication is that she's the one
39:00 communicating with the head of the Marines.

39:10 - Because why would she bother to steal it?

39:38 how you're seeing Zorro starting to lighten up, too.
