WDFNL GF preview: Merrivale A reserve captain Nicole Ferguson and A grade captain Georgia Martin speak to The Standard, with the Tigers represented in five of the six netball deciders.
Transcript
00:00 Georgia Grand Final week with Merival. You've got five teams across seniors and juniors.
00:05 How does it feel?
00:06 Yeah, really good. Really exciting. It's been such a good season and it's been nice to be
00:14 rewarded for that, like with all the teams that have gotten in. The poor 13s obviously
00:19 didn't make it, but for the rest of us it's been awesome.
00:22 What would you say is the secret to Merival's success? Last year you had a lot of representation
00:26 as well, this year again, but just the success that you guys had through all grades in netball.
00:31 I think, well I've been here for 13 years now, so I think it's just the friendship and
00:36 mateship and the community, the family, the families around the club. It's just great.
00:42 Everyone's here playing for each other.
00:44 Yeah, I 100% agree. Obviously this is my first year, so I'd like to say that I'm the difference,
00:49 but I'm not. But yeah, absolutely, all of us, especially the senior teams, we're all
00:58 really good friends, so we all just hang out. It's nice to get around each other. I suppose
01:04 I'm just stuttering now.
01:07 Nicole, you were A-grade captain prior last year. What's it like to welcome Georgia to
01:13 the club this year and see her take the reins of the A-grade team to, again, the heights
01:19 that it's been used to?
01:20 No, it's been really good. Obviously, I've always said I'm getting one of the older ones
01:24 now, so stepping down was definitely a priority. It's good to see the new ones and the young
01:30 ones come through. It's just been great to watch them have such a successful year.
01:37 And Georgia, you've got a lot of junior talent in the A-grade team as well. You've got Peyton,
01:41 all those girls. What's it like to see those girls play, I guess, their junior level, but
01:47 step up into those senior grades as well?
01:50 It's awesome because it just becomes such an easy transition for them. That's the point
01:54 of all of it, isn't it? I remember as a junior wanting to be able to step up and play the
01:58 other girls and everything like that, whereas these girls are the next level. They're so
02:02 talented and to really harness that to get them up to A-grade level and even A-res and
02:08 B-grade girls, they're all getting some pretty good court time. It's really nice to see and
02:14 you don't even really notice the difference, to be honest.
02:17 You've got a few different opponents across the grades, but I think with the Tigers, A-res,
02:20 A-grade, you're playing Miranda. What's the key to not knocking off the boys this year?
02:29 Just level up. Play our game. Level up and just try and keep a cool head. I'm not used
02:37 to having many crowds around you guys, but try and block out all the excess noise and
02:41 just play the game and have fun.
