Cornerback Davon Banks replays his big day against Boise State and his career lead-up.
Transcript
00:00 It was crazy.
00:01 Probably a day or two after I graduated high school,
00:05 I got a call from Coach Harris saying that he's gonna offer me a scholarship,
00:11 stuff like that.
00:13 Had you been talking to him much before that?
00:15 Just a little bit.
00:17 My sophomore year, it was a little off and on, and then I got hurt.
00:20 So I got hurt, and then COVID, so I just wasn't really talking to nobody.
00:25 And then that spring, they said they had one spot left.
00:28 And sent them my film and stuff like that.
00:31 Went to a camp in Redlands, and they liked what they saw, and they offered me.
00:35 Were you starting to make plans for that next school year,
00:39 going to college somewhere else or playing football?
00:41 Shoot, man, I was getting ready to go to a JC and just weighing all my options.
00:47 Didn't really know either JC or walk-on somewhere,
00:51 but I'm happy I got that call from Coach Harris.
00:53 What's JC?
00:55 Cerritos College.
00:57 What was that?
00:59 You went down last year.
01:00 Was that in a game or in practice?
01:01 It was in a game, sir.
01:02 Against Cal?
01:03 Against Oregon State.
01:05 Can you share what happened?
01:08 Shoot, just tried to make a tackle.
01:11 Didn't feel right.
01:12 My shoulder came out, and that's about it.
01:16 Devon, it seemed like that first PBU or two, business as usual,
01:21 you went out and made the play, whatever.
01:23 Then after the third one, I see you sheathed the sword a little bit.
01:26 Tell me what that was all about and starting to have fun out there.
01:29 Shoot, man, it was just kind of like in the moment type of thing.
01:33 I didn't really know what to do, I guess.
01:36 I don't really know.
01:37 I see everybody really do it, so I just, shoot, put that in my little bag of tricks.
01:43 But, yeah, hopefully I got some different ones coming soon.
01:46 It wasn't pre-planned or choreographed or anything like that?
01:48 No, it just popped in my head and I did it.
01:51 Looks like the Boise State guy, you even could have had a second pick.
01:54 Yes, sir.
01:55 It was last year really hard for you because you had your moments.
01:58 That interception at Arizona State was sensational on the sidelines.
02:02 I think you're the only one of that that got a pick last year.
02:06 I guess the Saints and somebody else.
02:10 Then you had a couple of rough times in that game, and you eventually got hurt.
02:16 It was kind of a weird season for you because you got to be a starter for the first time.
02:20 You got the pick, but you got injured.
02:23 You probably won't be here much of the play.
02:26 I just feel like it was a learning experience for me.
02:30 That's what I really think of it.
02:33 If I can go back, shoot, I'll do it again.
02:38 I just say it was a big learning experience for me, and it really helped me,
02:41 and it really gave me something to look at to really work on during the offseason.
02:46 I was watching you when we had a chance to watch practice,
02:50 and I see you kind of sitting off alone during the breaks and stuff.
02:52 It looks like you're really focused.
02:55 Leave me alone. I'm thinking here I'm in competition.
02:58 It just looked like you were really getting out there.
03:01 I just try to be locked in.
03:04 I just try to grab every little detail.
03:07 Sometimes you're not going to get the same rep you're going to get on the field
03:11 that you're going to get off the field,
03:12 so I'm just trying to get those mental reps off the field as well.
