It was a move 16 years in the making but finally, incandescent bulbs are a thing of the past. Mostly. A ban on the sale of them went into effect in August. But like most, you still might have a few holdouts around your house.

00:00 It was a move 16 years in the making,
00:02 but finally incandescent bulbs
00:04 are a thing of the past.
00:05 Mostly a ban on the sale of them
00:08 went into effect in August,
00:09 but like me, you might have a
00:11 few holdouts around your house.
00:13 Now I went all over my home,
00:15 looked at all of my light bulbs.
00:17 I have 48 of them.
00:18 Most of them are LEDs,
00:20 but I did find a few holdouts
00:22 like this one in my basement.
00:24 I also found this bulb on my back porch.
00:26 Both lights I don't really use very much.
00:29 It's only about 50% of the average
00:31 homes electricity use according to
00:33 government data and switching to LED
00:35 lights will save you an estimated
00:37 $225 per year or $3 billion annually
00:39 for consumers as a whole.
00:40 It will also cut 222 metric tons of
00:43 carbon emissions over the next 30 years.
00:45 So do I need to switch my bulbs out right
00:48 away if it were me if it was a commonly
00:51 used area like a lamp or something like that?
00:54 I would probably go ahead and just replace it.
00:57 If it's something like a closet in
00:59 your basement that you use, you know,
01:01 two minutes a month,
01:03 you probably don't need to worry as
01:05 much about it when you do finally
01:07 make the switch, you may pay just
01:09 a bit more per bulb up front,
01:11 but those costs are coming down and
01:13 LED bulbs will last you 25 times
01:16 longer than an incandescent one.
01:17 So you'll see cost savings
01:19 within the first year.
01:20 There are some exceptions for plant
01:22 lights and appliance lights, for instance,
01:24 but ultimately the change is upon us.
01:26 And experts say this switch will make for a brighter future for all of us.
