00:00 We can go ahead and start if you'd like to go ahead with the opening statement.
00:04 >> Yeah, first of all, I just want to say thanks for you guys for
00:07 accommodating this early morning.
00:09 I know it was a late night for you guys and for everybody.
00:11 So obviously, busy day ahead, getting all the tape watched and
00:15 then having to make some difficult decisions.
00:19 So I appreciate you guys hopping on early this morning.
00:21 >> All right, let's go to David Newton followed by Skylar Callahan.
00:27 [BLANK_AUDIO]
00:30 >> Yeah, Coach, from what you were saying last night about the wide receiver,
00:36 it almost sounded like you were planning to move ahead for
00:40 the opener as if you might not have a shark and terrorists.
00:44 Is that kind of the mindset right now or what is the mindset?
00:47 >> Dave, the mindset for me is it's kind of a combination of both those things.
00:53 It is kind of hey, move ahead and then if we get somebody great,
00:57 it's a day to day thing.
00:58 I'm encouraged at the progress that guys are making.
01:03 And I think hopefully we'll get an indication in the next few days,
01:08 how some of those guys are looking for the against Atlanta.
01:13 >> And what did you say out of Bryce, the way he handled not having
01:19 some of his top receivers out there and had to deal with other players?
01:22 >> Yeah, I thought he did a great job.
01:24 I think he's got a lot of confidence in his teammates.
01:28 And the thing about it is since OTAs and training camp,
01:31 those receivers have, he's kind of repped through with all those receivers.
01:36 So that's the positive thing.
01:38 As a young guy coming in, I think he's had a chance to get to work with and
01:42 throw a lot of balls to kind of every receiver on our roster.
01:45 So I think he had a comfort level with all of them.
01:47 >> Thanks, appreciate it.
01:48 >> Hey, Frank, good morning.
01:52 Just wanted to get your thoughts on Matt Corral and
01:54 kind of how you assess the entire body of work that he's had,
01:58 even dating back to when you guys first got him in the building.
02:02 And also kind of how you see the value of carrying a third quarterback versus
02:07 maybe an extra special team or extra receivers or something like that.
02:11 >> Yeah, really encouraged with Matt.
02:15 I think he's made great progress.
02:18 Matt's incredibly athletic.
02:20 He's got a really strong arm.
02:22 I think he's worked as hard as anybody in the building.
02:25 He spent a lot of time in this building.
02:27 Josh McCown has done a great job.
02:31 Those two have put a lot of time in together.
02:34 So happy with the progress that he's made.
02:36 And he's had a lot of snaps in the preseason, and I think he's done a good job.
02:41 As far as keeping the third quarterback on the roster,
02:46 obviously with the new rule, it's something that has to be considered.
02:51 Scott and I have already had several initial discussions about that.
02:56 And that's a decision that will be made here in the next, obviously,
03:03 couple days.
03:04 There's a lot of factors that go into that.
03:07 So, but happy with the progress that Matt has made.
03:11 [BLANK_AUDIO]
03:13 >> All right, let's go to Mike K followed by Bashtai Hurt.
03:16 [BLANK_AUDIO]
03:17 >> Hey Frank, thanks for doing this.
03:20 When you factor in the offensive line,
03:22 you already have a lot of veterans starters.
03:26 How does that impact the way you look at the depth group,
03:29 especially from a leadership standpoint when you're making decisions on who
03:33 should stay and who should go?
03:35 >> Yeah, it does factor in Mike, just because, right?
03:40 I mean, we do have, feel like we do have a solid group up front, a good group.
03:46 But some vets, seasoned vets up front that can help lead that room.
03:52 So you wanna have that mix.
03:55 We wanna have young guys that we can develop, not only on the 53 man roster, but
03:59 also on the practice squad.
04:00 So those will be big decisions here today and tomorrow.
04:04 >> Morning, Coach.
04:07 With cuts looming, how do you philosophically balance
04:13 what you've seen in practice versus what you've seen in preseason games?
04:17 >> Yeah, I think, Vashti, like you said, it's a combination of both.
04:23 Obviously, you get three preseason games.
04:26 So they are weighted more heavily, but
04:29 we have a lot of practices and then three preseason games.
04:32 So it's gotta be the whole body of work.
04:35 It's gotta be what's happened in meetings, in drills.
04:40 Everything gets considered, and I think it's all important.
04:46 And then philosophically, it's just wire in on those decisions and
04:50 then go with the guys that you can trust and you see getting better all the time.
04:54 [BLANK_AUDIO]
04:57 >> Let's go to John Ellis, followed by Darren Gant.
05:00 [BLANK_AUDIO]
05:05 You're on mute, John.
05:06 [BLANK_AUDIO]
05:09 >> Good morning, Coach.
05:10 Sorry about that.
05:12 >> Morning. >> Brian, we talked with him last night,
05:14 and the one thing he said that stood out to me is he's ready to hit somebody.
05:19 How excited are you to get Brian and Justin and
05:22 the rest of the pass rush group out there when real bullets start flying here?
05:26 >> Yeah, very excited.
05:27 I mean, obviously, Brian has had an incredible training camp.
05:33 You can see the type of player he is in everything that we do, in drills,
05:38 in practice, teamwork, pass rush stuff.
05:41 So excited to get him out there.
05:43 Obviously, Derrick Brown didn't play.
05:45 Justin hasn't played.
05:47 Frankie and Shaq didn't play this last week.
05:52 So I'm really excited to get that whole defensive unit out there.
05:55 They've never been on the field together as a starting unit.
05:59 So I'm excited about what Brian and those guys are gonna bring.
06:05 Brian, not just from a player standpoint, but the leader that he is.
06:09 So we'll get that rolling here this week.
06:12 >> Thanks, Coach.
06:16 >> Brian, as you sort of transition from training camp mode in the kind of regular
06:21 season mode and with fewer bodies, what's the biggest difference in the practice
06:25 routines and what you guys put, or what you're putting a team through when you go
06:29 from 90 to 53?
06:31 >> Yeah, now we get into where we're carting practices.
06:35 So the one offense is going up against the scout team.
06:39 Whereas when we're in training camp mode, it's ones versus ones.
06:42 Everything is competitive like that.
06:43 Now, we get into regular season mode.
06:46 When we get the full complement of practice squad players in,
06:50 which takes a couple days after cuts are made,
06:52 then it takes a 24 hour period where we get those guys back.
06:56 But once we have all the practice squad guys, we kind of get into that carted mode.
07:01 We still have some competitive drills one on one, but
07:03 most of it goes to carted periods.
07:05 >> Let's go to Steve Reed, followed by Kevin Tolbert.
07:12 >> Hey, Frank.
07:15 Can you hear me?
07:20 >> I can.
07:20 >> Okay, what position, excuse me, I know they're all difficult.
07:25 And this is awful time for coaches, but what positions are you looking at?
07:31 You're just like, man, this is gonna be tough as far as cuts.
07:35 >> Steve, I just think I wouldn't get into it by position.
07:41 It's a great question.
07:43 Certainly one that Scott and I have talked a lot about.
07:46 But literally every position has battles in place, not just for
07:52 the roster, but play time, who's starting, how we're looking at things.
07:57 So, but the good news is they're hard decisions, right?
08:01 Because we feel good about the guys we had on our roster.
08:03 [BLANK_AUDIO]
08:11 >> Frank, last night Bryce mentioned feeling good about the offense
08:16 getting off to a fast start as they put those drives together.
08:21 Can you talk about what the biggest catalyst was in that effort compared to
08:26 the previous weeks?
08:27 And do you believe that they've turned on a mindset now,
08:31 that's where you want them to be going into the first week?
08:36 >> Yeah, Kevin, I just think it was two things.
08:41 Don't beat yourself with a big mistake, and then,
08:46 but still being able to overcome.
08:49 [BLANK_AUDIO]
08:59 And we also were able to make a few plays.
09:02 And I think that was, you need consistent play making, move the ball down.
09:06 You need consistent play, make plays down as you're moving down the field.
09:11 But there's gonna come times and drives where you need a big play.
09:15 And whether it's third down, red zone, and we saw that last night.
09:18 So that was a good step.
09:20 [BLANK_AUDIO]
09:24 >> All right, let's go to Darren Gale.
09:26 >> Frank, wanted to ask you again about that play with Cam Peoples at the end
09:29 of the game as somebody who's been involved competition committee.
09:33 Just in terms of the rule itself, that fumble out of the end zone,
09:37 that turns into a touchback.
09:38 What do you think about that and just in general?
09:41 >> Yeah, I mean, I'll look forward, I'll give those guys a call
09:47 just to talk through that again.
09:49 But listen, that's been a long standing rule.
09:52 We talk a lot about that as a team.
09:54 We show a lot of tape of all the plays where players are reaching for the pylon.
10:02 And so that goes in our situational football category.
10:07 So for instance, we say don't reach, don't reach unless
10:14 there are certain situations.
10:15 I'm not gonna go into what all those are.
10:17 But we say when you do reach, when you're at the pylon,
10:20 to reach to the outside of the pylon.
10:23 So that if, and you think, well, what are you serious?
10:26 Yeah, we are very serious.
10:28 We have examples of this where you can see a guy and if you're gonna reach,
10:33 reach for the outside of the pylon.
10:35 So that if the ball does come out, you're getting it on the six inch line,
10:40 as opposed to it being a touchback.
10:42 As far as how do I feel about that touchback rule?
10:45 I mean, obviously it's a devastating rule, but hey, it's been around forever.
10:49 You don't see it come into play a whole lot.
10:52 We just gotta take care of business on offense.
10:54 That's the way I see it.
10:54 [BLANK_AUDIO]
10:58 >> Any more questions for coach?
10:59 [BLANK_AUDIO]
11:02 Let's go to John Ellis really quick.
11:03 >> Coach, just on a personal level, Dom Capers is on your staff and
11:08 then John Fox, who coached this team for a while,
11:10 was in the building last night with Detroit.
11:12 Did you have a chance to speak with coach Fox?
11:14 And obviously, how surreal is that to have sort of all three of you back together in
11:18 one building in one night?
11:20 >> Yeah, it was great.
11:22 I worked with coach Fox last year.
11:24 And so it was good to see.
11:28 When coach Fox was here, obviously had a great run here.
11:33 I think he's a tremendous person and a tremendous coach.
11:36 So kind of fun to see him last night.
11:39 And of course, obviously with coach Capers, that's been documented.
11:41 This is a great situation for me here with coach Capers.
11:46 [BLANK_AUDIO]
11:49 Thanks everyone again for this morning.
11:51 >> All right, thanks coach.
11:51 [BLANK_AUDIO]
11:52 [BLANK_AUDIO]
