00:00 For a young prey animal, safety can come in numbers.
00:05 (suspenseful music)
00:08 During the rainy season, buffalo calves are plenty,
00:25 a staple meal for many predators.
00:29 It's the male's job to protect them.
00:32 One ton of muscle and horn,
00:35 a male buffalo is one of the most dangerous animals
00:39 in the African bush.
00:41 Not afraid to take on any predator.
00:45 Even this young calf saw off his attacker,
00:55 but he is badly injured.
00:57 (suspenseful music)
01:01 If he is to stand any chance,
01:03 he needs to get back to his herd.
01:05 Quickly.
01:10 The smell of fresh blood draws in predators and scavengers
01:17 from far and wide.
01:19 He must reach the herd before they reach him.
01:27 (heart beating)
01:29 Hitchhiking oxpeckers pick at his wounds,
01:32 keeping the fresh blood flowing and the trail hot.
01:35 He makes it, and despite being a walking time bomb,
01:49 the herd surrounds him and tries to nurture him
01:52 back to health.
01:53 (suspenseful music)
01:56 Nearby elephants see him as a red rag
02:01 and don't want him anywhere near them.
02:03 This calf's future may be uncertain.
02:23 But the herd's instinct will be to protect him,
02:25 no matter what.
