Joine Kern Living host Ryan Nelson and Kern County Animal Services Director Nick Cullen as they introduce us to the pet of the week: Calliope!
Transcript
00:00 Welcome back. Today is Thursday, so that means it's time for pet of the week with Nick Cullen from Kern County Animal Services. Nick, how are you?
00:09 I'm doing great. I'm doing great. Good to see you, Ryan. I brought with me, her name is Calliope. We call her Callie for short.
00:16 She's one of those dogs that, she's a long stay dog. She's been with us since July 6th.
00:21 Kind of raised in the shelter since she's still a puppy, but she's just such a super good dog.
00:30 She's got a lot of energy, don't let her fool you right now. She's laying on the ottoman here and being very relaxed,
00:35 but she's only doing that because shortly before we got her to the studio, my staff ran her around in circles in the play yard and got it all burned off.
00:42 But she's available for adoption right now at the Kern County Animal Shelter.
00:45 Okay, how old is she by chance?
00:47 She's 102 years, so she's still a puppy. She's still got a little bit of growing to do. She's not going to get too much bigger than she is right now,
00:52 but she's high energy, gets along really well with other dogs.
00:55 That's great, because I know a lot of people when it comes to adopting dogs, sometimes they prefer a younger animal,
00:59 and to be in there since July, that's too long for any animal.
01:03 Especially because she was raised in the shelter, kind of, so it's almost two months ago, so you've got to figure she was even smaller back then.
01:09 It's important for her to get out, and she's going to be somebody's really cool family pet.
01:13 And where exactly can someone in Kern County come pick her up?
01:16 She's at the Kern County Animal Shelter. We're at 3951 Fruitvale Avenue, Fruitvale just north of Rosedale Highway.
01:22 We're open 10 to 4, Monday through Saturday, 2 to 7 on Wednesdays.
01:26 Come out and check us out. We have so many beautiful dogs that need your love.
01:29 Right, right. Now, speaking of that, you also do have a lot of events that go on throughout the week.
01:34 Anything coming up for you all?
01:35 Real big one is we're in the middle of Clear the Shelters. It's a nationwide adoption event.
01:39 We've eliminated all of our adoption fees, so all our adoptions are free this month.
01:44 And we also have our Streets of Bakersfield program coming this Saturday, which is just for you to come down and take a dog out for the day.
01:50 It's a doggy day out program. Helps the dogs, helps the community. It's a really cool thing.
01:54 Is that similar to fostering that you all do?
01:56 It's kind of like a one-day foster, but a lot of our animals can really benefit from leaving the shelter just for the day.
02:01 And that's what the Streets of Bakersfield program is for. Get them out of the shelter for a day.
02:06 And is it similar, again, to fostering where they get a report card and things of that nature?
02:10 That's exactly what it is. It's a quick application. You can actually fill it out online on our website, currentcountyanimalservices.org.
02:17 You can also fill out an application Saturday morning. We give you a dog about 8 or 9 a.m.
02:21 You bring it back to us 2 to 3 p.m. Tell us all about your day.
02:24 And it helps the adopter for those animals get some real good insight about how that animal behaves in a home.
02:30 And I was always wondering, if they have a good report card, do they get a treat?
02:34 They can. But the most important thing about that report card is it tells us so much about the animal.
02:40 A lot of times we have adopters that come to us, and they want to know how the animal gets along in a home.
02:44 Those report cards really tell us what that is, and it makes it so that it's going to stick in the home when it gets adopted.
02:50 That's great. What you guys do is absolutely amazing. Thank you, Nick, so much for bringing the dog in, for coming yourself.
02:55 And that is all the time that we have for today. Thank you so much for watching Kern Living.
02:58 If you could, please get on your phone and give us a follow at Kern Living on Facebook and Instagram and myself at RyanNelson23.
03:06 And I'll see you all Friday morning, same time, same place, for Kern Living.
