00:00 Well, animal rescue organizations are stepping up to help pets impacted by the wildfires
00:06 in Maui.
00:07 Lena Halland has more in today's Positive Story.
00:11 Friday night came a special delivery from Maui.
00:14 Kind of brought a tear to your eye seeing them come off the plane and knowing they're
00:18 safe here.
00:19 Forty dogs and cats that were already in Maui shelters before the fires individually crated
00:24 and shipped to the Bay Area in a coordinated effort by Berkeley Humane.
00:29 What we did was help clear the shelters in Maui so that animals displaced by the fires
00:35 can have a place to go while their owners look for them and hopefully they can be reunited.
00:40 The Animal Rescue Foundation in Walnut Creek taking in a total of five dogs and four kittens,
00:45 one of which has already found its forever home.
00:49 CEO Susan Levick says for her it's personal after growing up in Santa Rosa.
00:55 It means more to me than I can possibly say.
00:59 Catastrophic wildfires ravaged our community twice and I know what that feels like.
01:05 I know the absolute heartbreak and confusion.
01:10 And it doesn't end there.
01:13 Marin Humane, East Bay SPCA, the Alameda Animal Shelter and the Tri-City Animal Shelter also
01:19 stepped up with Berkeley Humane and ARF to take in as many dogs as they had room for.
01:25 Animal welfare in general, we're all family, we're ohana as the Hawaiians call it, and
01:31 so we wanted to help them out.
01:33 The staff right now is overwhelmed with animals in need.
01:36 And by Monday morning, people like Beth Manganaro showed up with an open heart and an open kennel.
01:42 Because my family and I always rescue dogs and it's really important to give a dog another
01:47 chance.
01:48 And that's something that we've always enjoyed as Maui, especially Lahaina.
01:52 So I'm just trying to help out in a way that I can rescue a puppy.
