00:00 The aim of London's ultra-low emission zone is to reduce pollution and cleanse the air
00:04 of the city by discouraging drivers of high-polluting vehicles from using roads.
00:09 The zone is set to expand across all London boroughs from the 29th August, with some 2,750
00:15 cameras being installed as a result.
00:17 The expansion of the zone will see drivers in outer London pay a £12.50 daily fee if
00:22 their vehicles do not meet required emissions standards.
00:26 While cities across the country are employing clean air zones to try and reduce pollution,
00:31 like in Bristol, Birmingham and Newcastle for example, Londoners are especially enraged
00:36 to the point of protest.
00:38 It's thought that the expansion will hit the poorest the hardest and on one occasion has
00:42 even seen a minicab driver start a seven-day hunger strike in protest after claiming the
00:47 expansion will hit his private hire business because his car fails to meet modern emissions
00:52 standards.
00:53 The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has previously described his decision to expand the EULES
00:57 area as "very difficult".
