00:00 As students begin their first days back at school, many will be met with new resources to help them succeed.
00:06 Sometimes students need a boost to reach their full potential. That's where these folks come in.
00:11 You may have seen them inside your own child's school. They're site coordinators from Communities in Schools.
00:16 CIS is a nationwide nonprofit committed to helping students graduate.
00:21 Oftentimes it means addressing non-academic issues that get in the way of learning.
00:25 One of our staff members who is a Communities in Schools site coordinator will identify what are the assets that exist inside a school
00:33 or exist outside in the community that could be helpful when they're working with caseloads of students
00:38 or students who maybe have issues that look like examples around food insecurity, access to health care.
00:45 Ray Saldana runs the program and he says this year, with the help of new funding, the program is expanding.
00:50 Among the states benefiting from this expansion are Florida, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Texas and Virginia.
00:58 Saldana says the need is greater than ever.
01:01 Students are disconnected, disengaged. Students who are talking to our teachers about trauma,
01:06 that we want to have somebody on a campus to focus on that student.
01:10 And if we can't focus on getting deep with that student, they'll never be on a path to graduation.
01:16 They'll continue to miss 10, 15, 20 days of school this season.
01:21 And it's important for us to have that staff in place.
01:24 With this expansion, Communities in Schools will reach an estimated 1.8 million students in more than 3,000 schools across the U.S.
