100 teachers from Mindanao undergo small-scale chemistry training
Transcript
00:00 Over a hundred secondary school teachers across Mindanao were brought together by a small-scale chemical training program
00:06 to revolutionize science education in the region.
00:09 Various institutions have organized the training on innovative small-scale chemical techniques,
00:14 reducing chemical reactions, and using plastic instead of glassware.
00:19 Lu Antonio of PIA Iligan City, Lanao del Norte, for the details.
00:25 A groundbreaking initiative aimed at revolutionizing science education
00:30 has brought together over 100 secondary school teachers from different parts of Mindanao for training.
00:36 The small-scale chemistry training program was jointly organized by the Bangkok Bank Public Company Limited,
00:42 the Chemical Society of Thailand,
00:44 in partnership with the Premier Research Institute of Science and Mathematics of the Mindanao State University
00:50 and the Iligan Institute of Technology, Office of the Vice-Chancellor for International Affairs,
00:55 and the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Public Affairs.
00:59 The training focused on imparting innovative small-scale chemistry techniques,
01:03 which involve reducing the scale of chemical reactions roughly 1,000 times lesser
01:08 and conducting experiments using plastic materials instead of traditional glassware.
01:14 These techniques not only prove to be more cost-effective,
01:17 but also enhance safety protocols, making chemistry experiments more accessible and engaging for students.
01:24 We picked the small-scale because the small-scale allows you to do that in just normal environment,
01:31 like in the classroom. You don't have to have the laboratory or something.
01:34 And the set-up of the kits does not take a lot of time,
01:40 so the teacher can handle that by their own.
01:43 So that will enhance more practical lessons in the school.
01:48 MSU IIT plans to replicate this program to more schools.
01:53 We hope we can actually replicate this program so that we can train more secondary teachers
02:00 that can do this kind of innovative approach to lab experiments without really spending so much,
02:06 without the need of a laboratory facilities,
02:09 but you can actually do your experiments inside the classroom with minimal cost
02:14 and also with minimal risk to the students.
02:17 Abdul Basit Barabato, a teacher from Munay National High School, felt delighted.
02:22 According to him, teaching chemistry became a challenge, especially in the hinterland areas.
02:27 This is why they employed alternative teaching methods.
02:31 He said the training in the chemistry education kits provided to them will be helpful in their teaching.
02:37 Thank you for this opportunity. Thank you for sharing their knowledge.
02:44 Actually, this is really a great opportunity, not only to me, but to the whole secondary teachers.
02:51 I am thankful because I experienced this one-in-a-lifetime experience.
02:56 Meanwhile, Vice President and Department of Education Secretary Sara Duterte Carpio
03:02 conveyed a message of thanks to the organizers
03:05 and emphasized the significant role of teachers in cultivating curiosity, creativity,
03:10 rational, scientific inquiry, and experiential learning.
03:14 She stressed the investment in STEM instructors' professional development to enhance education in the country.
03:21 Lu Antonio of PIA Iligan-Citileno del Norte, for The Nation.
