I'm a Lucozade addict and I get through EIGHT bottles a day - it's harder to give up than class A drugs

  • last year
A grandfather is addicted to Lucozade despite having three heart attacks - and said it's harder to give up than class A drugs.

Garry Johnson, 65, began drinking coffee aged 12 and loved the caffeine buzz.

The now-retired painter and decorator took cocaine and amphetamines in his teens, and after 15 years of on-off drug use went 'cold turkey' when his son Sam was born in 1992.

Keen to stay energised, he took up drinking 380ml bottle bottles of Lucozade Original - and now necks eight a day.

He's had the habit for 29 YEARS and it currently costs him around £150 a month.

And at today's prices, his nearly three decade habit would have cost him more than £42,800.

He had three heart attacks between 2012 and 2014 because of a hereditary heart condition, and doctors encouraged him to ditch caffeinated drinks.

He gave up dairy and every other form of caffeine - but he still necks more than three litres of Lucozade a day.

He said Lucozade is proving harder to give up than class A drugs - because of the "after effect - like that lovely feeling in your mouth after you eat an expensive bit of chocolate."

Garry, from Basildon, Essex, said: "I took cocaine every day but it was a piece of cake to give up - but I'd find it really hard to ever give up Lucozade.

"I love it - not just the taste but the affect on my body makes me feel great.

"If I do go two or three hours without one, I fancy one - God knows how I'd be after two days.

"Lucozade is the thing I wont give up.

"I'm still full of energy at 65 and people say I look 50!"

Single dad-of-three Garry was "obsessed" with David Bowie, who was known for his class-A habits and started taking speed and cocaine aged 15.

He said: "When I watched him play Starman as Ziggy Stardust on Top Of The Pops, my life changed overnight.

"I like to be up all the time, so I always liked stimulants, like David Bowie.

"After starting on speed, I would take cocaine six or seven nights a week, every week.

"It just gave me a buzz before I went out - I even took cocaine on my wedding day."

Garry stopped aged 30, when his son Sam, now 31, was born and went cold turkey because being a new dad was "stimulant enough".

He started drinking Red Bull but found himself with migraines - and eventually moved onto Lucozade.

He initially drank six a day, but has had eight a day for the last seven years.

Now he goes to Tesco every day and buys one or two four-packs - depending how many bottles he already has stacked up in the fridge ready to drink.

00:02 Hi, my name's Gary.
00:10 This is a story about how I became the Lucas Aid man.
00:13 As a kid, I always needed a stimulant.
00:15 So up until about the age of 12,
00:17 I would drink coffee, very weak coffee.
00:20 Then as I become a teenager,
00:22 with all my friends,
00:24 used to take amphetamine.
00:25 And then as I got into my early twenties,
00:27 I moved on to cocaine, like we all did.
00:30 But I've never moved on to alcohol or cigarettes.
00:33 I just stayed with fast drugs.
00:35 And then when I was 30, my eldest son was born.
00:38 And after 15 years of taking fast drugs,
00:40 I just stopped overnight.
00:42 But I wanted something else to give me a stimulant,
00:44 which was legal.
00:45 And I tried guarana juice, guarana powder,
00:49 guarana gum from the Holland and Barrett Health Shop,
00:52 which didn't agree with me.
00:53 I didn't like the taste.
00:55 I then tried Red Bull,
00:56 which was very nice to drink,
00:58 but you had a terrible headache and a migraine.
01:01 And the next day you'd have an upset stomach.
01:03 So I moved on from Red Bull onto Lucas Aid,
01:07 normal orange Lucas Aid.
01:09 And then I was told by a nurse,
01:11 back in the day,
01:12 the National Health used to give original Lucas Aid
01:15 to patients when they was ill
01:17 to make them feel more full of energy after an operation,
01:20 or when they were convalescing.
01:21 So I moved on to the original Lucas Aid.
01:24 And I've been having Lucas Aid every day
01:26 since about 1994.
01:29 And it gradually went from five bottles to six bottles.
01:31 I'm now currently on eight bottles a day of Lucas Aid.
01:35 So I love being full of energy all the time.
01:37 It makes me feel healthy.
01:39 And I don't feel tired when I'm drinking it.
01:43 First thing I'll do when I wake up in the morning,
01:44 before I clean my teeth or anything,
01:46 is have two or three sips of Lucas Aid.
01:48 And then I just drink during the day.
01:50 And if I haven't had one for an hour,
01:51 or an hour and a half, whatever,
01:52 that's when I'll start craving one.
01:53 So I have another one.
01:55 So I'm roughly on eight bottles a day
01:56 at the moment of Lucas Aid.
01:58 I believe it helps me keep young,
02:00 because although I'm 65,
02:03 a lot of people say when they meet me for the first time,
02:05 you were about 50, 52, 53, they say,
02:08 when I'm actually 65.
02:10 And people, my peers, who are my own age group,
02:12 they all got grey hair,
02:14 where my hair has stayed the same colour.
02:16 So again, I put that down to the benefits of Lucas Aid.
02:18 I also do a lot of walking, energy-wise.
02:21 I believe that's down to the Lucas Aid as well.
02:23 Unlike a lot of people my own age,
02:25 I haven't got a beer belly.
02:26 It's not made me fat.
02:27 And the other thing is,
02:28 I don't get a hangover the next day,
02:30 like those who drink so much beer.
02:32 I'll drink so much Lucas Aid,
02:33 but there's no side effects, no dodgy side effects,
02:35 not that I've encountered.
02:37 I can honestly say that drinking eight bottles a day,
02:40 not only makes me full of energy,
02:41 but I honestly believe it's given me the Alexia of youth.
02:44 And I'm gonna have one now.
02:52 Oh, lovely.
02:54 (chewing)
02:56 (water bubbling)
