00:00 Hello and welcome to the WrestleTalk News, I'm Luke Owen and this is wrestling news.
00:11 While much of today's news will focus around last night's SummerSlam, we actually kick
00:15 things off with a bit of news that broke just before the show began.
00:19 Mike Johnson of PWInsider broke the news that Kairi, the former Kairi Sane in WWE, will
00:25 be returning to WWE.
00:27 While there's no time frame given in his report, Johnson wrote that the return would
00:31 be imminent.
00:33 This led to some speculation from viewers waiting for SummerSlam to start a Slam that
00:37 Sane might get involved in the show - perhaps in the Smackdown Women's 3 way as her former
00:41 Kabuki Warrior tag partner was defending her title.
00:44 But those who saw the show will note that Kairi did not return on the show, and Dave
00:48 Meltzer has clarified Johnson's report, noting that she will fulfil her remaining
00:52 date in Japan before heading back to WWE, which would be around November time.
00:57 Kairi Sane left WWE in 2021, and like a lot of departures from around that time, she left
01:02 on good terms.
01:03 She was given a video that chronicled her departure, and was announced as an ambassador
01:07 for the company in Japan before officially leaving in December 2021 when her contract
01:12 expired.
01:13 She has since expressed desires to return to WWE.
01:15 Are you excited for Kairi Sane's return?
01:19 Let me know in the comments down below.
01:21 Moving over to Summerslam now, and Roman Reigns once again retained his world title in the
01:26 main event of the show, beating Jey Uso with the assistance of Jimmy Uso who turned heel
01:31 on his brother.
01:32 Ok, so it wasn't Jey Uso, it wasn't Cody Rhodes, it wasn't Sami Zayn, it wasn't
01:38 Kevin Owens, it wasn't Drew McIntyre, it wasn't even Logan Paul.
01:41 So when will Roman Reigns be dropping the Universal Championship?
01:46 Well following his win over Rhodes at WrestleMania 39, it was reported that the planned main
01:51 event for WrestleMania 40 next year would be the Roman/Cody rematch for the title - which
01:56 would suggest that Reigns ain't dropping the belt before then.
02:00 And according to Fightful Select, we now have a more definitive answer on when Roman Reigns
02:05 will lose the Universal Championship.
02:08 It will be whenever Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman say it f****** ends.
02:13 Well, um, well, that's us told isn't it.
02:17 It also tells us just how much power both Heyman and Reigns have over the Bloodline
02:22 storyline in WWE and their creative.
02:25 It was reported at the Madison Square Garden show last month that Roman and his Bloodline
02:29 segment went 20 minutes over their allotted time, which threw the rest of the show into
02:35 a rewritten chaos.
02:36 Fightful add that Reigns and Heyman will have heavy input as to who that would be when it
02:41 comes to the man to take the title off him.
02:43 A higher up in WWE said of Heyman and Roman, "They are constantly looking at every possibility.
02:49 When they think it's the very best thing for business, they'll know to switch it
02:52 up, do it right, and really make someone doing it."
02:56 The source justified the decision to keep Reigns on top and continue how things are
03:01 going - pointing at Roman, Jey, Jimmy Solo and even Cody being in a better position now
03:06 than they were before.
03:08 But like a piece of string, how much longer is longer?
03:11 In the post-show press conference, Heyman said that this story was in the bottom of
03:15 the third - which is a sportsball reference - and said that they were only just hitting
03:20 their stride.
03:21 Despite being three years into this thing, Heyman said, "There's so much more for
03:25 us to master.
03:26 It's a craft.
03:27 It's an evolving craft."
03:29 Now look, I don't know baseball all that well, I'm more of a basketball man myself,
03:33 but I have been informed by Tempest - who is from Canada and therefore does know about
03:37 baseball - that he once worked retail at a baseball stadium where a baseball game went
03:41 19 innings.
03:44 So if Heyman is talking about that game when saying that this one is bottom of the third,
03:48 we could be looking at Roman beating Bruno's record.
03:51 But as if to quell any of those worries, Heyman added, "Wait till you see what we've got
03:56 in the fourth."
03:57 With yet another swerve taking place in the Bloodline saga, you might be forgiven for
04:01 thinking that perhaps Vince McMahon has some fingers in the creative pie.
04:06 And at the post-show SummerSlam press conference, Brandon Thurston of WrestleNomics posed this
04:11 question to Triple H, specifically asking about McMahon's recent life-altering surgery.
04:17 "Firstly, Hunter noted that I've seen Vince come back from some remarkable things way
04:21 faster than anybody else I've ever seen do it.
04:25 He still brags that he was back quicker from two quad tears at the same time that I was
04:29 from one.
04:30 How long that is, I don't know."
04:33 This flawed the creative side of things, Hunter told Thurston that he would be silly to not
04:37 get advice from Vince from time to time, but noted that he was not in the mix creatively
04:41 on a daily basis.
04:43 He said, "Is he in day to day?
04:44 No.
04:45 Is he in all the time?
04:46 No."
04:47 So if it's not McMahon in the creative hot seat, then I guess it's on Triple H to put
04:50 out the fire that is his disgruntled women's locker room.
04:54 It was revealed in the lead up to SummerSlam that two high-profile women's matches were
04:58 pulled from the card.
04:59 The Women's World Championship match between Rhea Ripley and Raquel Rodriguez, and Becky
05:03 Lynch vs. Trish Stratus.
05:05 While the former was only rumoured for SummerSlam, the latter was actually planned before it
05:10 was pulled - with Fightful Slyke reporting that WWE wanted to limit the amount of matches
05:15 on PPV cards so as for the show to not run long.
05:19 Triple H was asked about this at the press conference where he claimed that nothing was
05:22 pulled from the SummerSlam card, coughed bulls***, and even joked that SummerSlam was already
05:26 quite a long show.
05:28 But despite Hunter's claims, Becky Lynch has been passive aggressively tweeting about
05:32 not being at the show - making a big point yesterday to say that she was not in Detroit
05:37 for SummerSlam, and posted a picture of herself making lemonade out of the lemon she was given
05:42 not being booked.
05:43 Rhea Ripley was also passively aggressively tweeting about not being on the card, and
05:47 Howe said she was just brought into Detroit for interviews - posting a picture of herself
05:52 getting ready to step on me mummy, I mean getting ready to do some media, rather than
05:57 a match - and an upside down smiley emoji when she was promoted to do even more media
06:02 for WWE's TikTok.
06:04 Stephanie Hypes of 10 Count asked Zoey Stark about the decision to not have Becky, Trish,
06:09 Rhea or Raquel on SummerSlam, which she defended saying, "There is a reason, guys.
06:14 Triple H is not just doing it to screw the women.
06:17 He's not.
06:18 He's doing it because he wants to make sure Becky Lynch and Trish Stratus have plenty
06:21 of time to do it."
06:23 And before you take to your keyboard and say, "well, they could have just cut that pointless
06:26 Battle Royal that had no stakes", you'd be wrong.
06:29 Because the stakes were sponsorship, dollery dudes.
06:32 With Fightful noting, the Battle Royal was done specifically as a vehicle for the Slim
06:36 Jim Partnership and LA Knight involvement in it.
06:40 One match that did get plenty of time was Brock Lesnar vs. Cody Rhodes, which ended
06:44 their long-running rivalry that began the night after Mania.
06:47 Rhodes beat Brock with several crossroads, and afterwards Brock took off his gloves for
06:52 a show of respect, pulling Cody in for a hug and raising his hand.
06:56 It was a moment of genuine humanity from Brock, which you don't get to see very often.
07:02 And according to Triple H, we weren't supposed to see it at all.
07:05 Hunter claims that Brock hugging Cody and raising his hands was completely unplanned,
07:10 and was Lesnar going off script.
07:13 Triple H said in the post-show presser that knowing Brock the way he does, the moment
07:17 was a true "holy s***" moment, with Cody clearly, genuinely earning that Brock Lesnar
07:22 respect that ain't easy to come by.
07:25 Elsewhere on the show, Seth Rollins retained his World Heavyweight Championship over Finn
07:29 Balor in a fine match with an excellent finish built around the dissension between Judgment
07:34 Day and the possibility of Damian Priest cashing in his Money in the Bank contract.
07:38 Balor has now lost to Seth twice, and J.D.
07:41 McDonough took to Twitter to note that Finn deserves better.
07:45 It had been reported that McDonough was set to join the ranks of Judgment Day, which was
07:48 even set up on television, but those plans were halted according to @WorkedWrestling
07:53 on Twitter.
07:54 Given that McDonough was tossed out of the Slim Jim Battle Royal only a handful of seconds
07:58 into it, it doesn't look like a big storyline push is coming his way all that soon.
08:04 But with that said, Io Sky lost on Smackdown then won the Women's title 24 hours later,
08:08 so what do I know.
08:09 Speaking of Sky, she was joined at the post-show press conference by Dakota Kai, who made her
08:14 return to TV last night to celebrate with her Damage Control buddies after Io won the
08:18 Women's Championship from Belair, who had just won it from Asuka.
08:22 It was a wonderful and heartwarming moment, as Kai is currently out with a torn ACL which
08:26 will likely keep her out of the ring for the rest of the year.
08:30 In fact, Kai told the press conference that she was "a ways away" from returning to
08:34 action but promised a "crazy" 2024 when she is back.
08:39 Let's just hope your team doesn't implode before you get back, bud.
08:43 That's all from me, go and watch Pete Quinnell's review of WWE SummerSlam by clicking the video
08:48 that's on screen right now while I try and get some sleep after last night's live reaction
08:53 stream.
08:54 Good night.
