00:00 I'm Laurie Blake, welcome to the WrestleTalk News.
00:08 On Wednesdays, because Luke's taking time off after doing SummerSlam stuff this weekend
00:11 and will be covering me on Friday so you can all rack on him then when he inevitably won't
00:14 be wearing pink, which means I'm here now on Wednesday, on a Wednesday we wear pink.
00:19 Our top story involves the big behind the scenes goings on in WWE, i.e. the merger with
00:24 the UFC Endeavour.
00:25 Now those of you with the superstitious mind frame might take Saturday's MMA style match
00:29 between Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler as an indication of how this particular merger
00:33 is going to go.
00:34 I don't know, I can't say, I don't know if it's going to be a harmonious marriage
00:37 made in heaven or a scrappy mess that somehow misses both the point of wrestling and MMA
00:41 simultaneously.
00:42 And yes, one of those was a jab at the match from SummerSlam, can you guess which one?
00:46 Anyway, points go to Shayna for the Chaos Armor gear.
00:49 All's I know is that this merger is happening soon, because at the time of the merger's
00:54 announcement it was revealed that it wouldn't be complete until late 2023 and now thanks
00:58 to an Endeavour press release we know that the transaction to combine the two companies
01:02 will complete mid to late September.
01:05 Which brings with it some bad news.
01:07 The first bit is a report from a while back that Vince's role in WWE creative is likely
01:11 to grow.
01:12 It just says 'oh goody' on here.
01:16 And the fact that part of the reason for the merger will obviously be to consolidate certain
01:20 roles in both companies into a singular role that deals with both WWE and the UFC, which
01:25 inevitably means layoffs are a coming as Endeavour tries to streamline its operations.
01:31 Brandon Thurston of WrestleNomics who reported on the press release was inundated with queries
01:35 about the potential layoffs and whether people imagined it would stretch to talent.
01:40 And he had this to say on Twitter.
01:41 "I don't have a strong impression about whether talent cuts will coincide with closing.
01:46 Employee layoffs are widely expected, unfortunately."
01:50 With the deal going through next month it's only a matter of time before the restructure
01:53 is revealed, so hold on to your butts.
01:56 Back to talk about the actual kayfabe side of wrestling which only has mildly less backstabbing
02:00 and corporate shenanigans.
02:01 Now Saturday night at Summerslam we got the next depth of depravity as Brother turned
02:05 on Brother when Jimmy Uso returned to WWE to take out his twin Jey during his match
02:11 with Roman Reigns.
02:12 Talk about tribal grief.
02:13 Roman Reigns reportedly suffered an injury during the match, which Fightful Select has
02:17 confirmed though the head of the table is still expected to appear on Smackdown this
02:20 Friday.
02:21 But that's about all we know of what's to come next in the ongoing saga.
02:25 Why did you do it Jimmy?
02:27 Jimmy!
02:28 Jimmy Jim Jim Jim Jimmy!
02:29 Why'd you do it man?
02:31 Common consensus is that this will lead to a Brother vs. Brother match, potentially at
02:36 Payback next month in one of the more confusing bits of wrestling to watch since choosing
02:40 to play as Aubrey Edwards in AEW Fight Forever and still having her there as the referee
02:44 also.
02:45 Though apparently some would like the sibling Smackdown to take place on a grander stage
02:49 as reported by WrestleVotes on Twitter, who said hearing that at least one creative force
02:53 backstage wants WWE to wait to WrestleMania to do the first Uso/Brother vs. Brother match.
02:59 Does Uso mean cousin or brother?
03:02 Which one does it mean?
03:03 It means cousin doesn't it?
03:05 Yeah it's like bro.
03:07 Before adding "However, that's unlikely at this point.
03:09 I'm told with the feeling that 35 weeks is too long of a stretch for three years to
03:16 get to this point."
03:17 It's not.
03:18 Following news of not only Roman Reigns' injury worries and Sonya Deville's unfortunate
03:22 torn ACL injury in a matter of days comes yet another potential blow to WWE's plans
03:26 as it appears that Sami Zayn is set to join the injured list.
03:30 If you watched Raw this week this isn't exactly brand new information as Zayn's
03:34 injury was used as a vital plot device facilitating not only JD McDonagh's attempt to impress
03:38 the Judgment Day but also the Shinsuke Nakamura heel turn at the end of the night.
03:43 Also it was sticking out of his arm at a horrible angle.
03:46 However while it was used as part of the storyline on the show there clearly is a real issue
03:50 there, namely that massive golf ball in Sami's left elbow.
03:53 Because yes, in a throwback to John Cena's infamous 2013 injury, Sami's elbow was noticeably
03:59 - and medically - trying to break out of his skin.
04:03 Now we have a bit of clarification as to what the situation is courtesy of Wrestling Observer's
04:06 Dave Meltzer.
04:07 Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio Meltzer confirmed that McDonagh's attack on Zayn
04:10 was a cover for Zayn's legit bursa sack injury, which is the technical term for the
04:15 thing growing out of his elbow.
04:23 Fightful Select also later added that all of Zayn's spots on Raw were planned to happen
04:27 with nothing changing due to the injury.
04:30 Meltzer also speculated on what WWE may do with the undisputed tag titles now that both
04:35 Zayn and Kevin Owens are on the shelf.
04:37 But despite Owens being out Meltzer said that he can still work with the company, just currently
04:41 allowing him time to rest and recover from his ongoing rib injury.
04:44 However this was meant to be short term, hence why Zayn and Owens haven't relinquished
04:48 the tag titles, although now with Zayn also hurt, those plans are less clear.
04:54 We at WrestleTalk would like to wish both Zayn and KO all the best in their recoveries.
04:58 And I'm really hoping this isn't the beginning of the Alien Takeover.
05:01 While Zayn and Owens shouldn't be out for too long, one man that we likely shouldn't
05:05 expect to see on WWE TV for a while is The Beast Brock Lesnar.
05:10 Probably from embarrassment, Chris's shorts split open didn't they.
05:13 That was fun, that was the best bit of Summerslam.
05:16 Following the excellent conclusion to the not so excellent feud with Cody Rhodes at
05:20 Summerslam, Lesnar of course brought Cody in for a good old Brock Lock, aka a nice warm
05:25 embrace.
05:26 Probably in the hopes of shuffling out of the arena without revealing his penis.
05:30 The heartwarming moment of humanity from Lesnar had the feeling of almost passing the torch,
05:36 especially with questions regarding Lesnar's long term WWE future cropping up earlier this
05:39 year.
05:40 Lesnar stated in an interview with UFC legend Daniel Cormier prior to WrestleMania 39 that
05:44 he wasn't sure how long he would continue in WWE, as well as revealing that he even
05:49 considered himself retired as far back as WrestleMania 36 in 2020.
05:54 While this would lead many to perhaps anticipate a Brock Lesnar farewell soon, what we perhaps
05:59 do know is that that farewell did not come at Summerslam.
06:03 Because according to Dave Meltzer from Wrestling Observer Radio, Lesnar will be back in WWE,
06:07 however it likely won't be until around WrestleMania 40 season.
06:10 Meltzer revealed that Lesnar was in fact originally advertised to feature on another premium live
06:15 event later this year, however that now looks to not be the case.
06:18 And with Lesnar embracing Cody at Summerslam, one can only hope this version of Brock we
06:22 see is more happy farmer Brock and well, less angry farmer Brock.
06:29 Sticking with those MMA guys and gals, there is also a little update on the status of Ronda
06:33 Rousey following Summerslam, because reports suggested that the Rowdy one would be set
06:36 to depart WWE following her match with Shayna Baszler on August 5th.
06:40 However according to PWInsider, Rousey is still currently listed on the company's
06:44 internal roster at present.
06:45 But it may only be a matter of time before this changes, as Baszler made a reference
06:50 to sending Ronda packing from WWE on this week's Raw, and Rousey herself took to Instagram
06:55 to say "Baszler you were the reason I got into this business, now I got no reason to
07:00 stay."
07:01 Curiously however, Dave Meltzer did describe Rousey's Summerslam match as her WWE farewell
07:05 at least for now, so perhaps she may be back at some point after all.
07:22 As well as injuries, heel turns and a whole lot of Triple H booking, this week's Raw
07:25 saw the debut of our brand new commentary team on Monday nights going forward.
07:29 The brand new team is of course not very new at all, as WWE decided last week that they
07:34 would be swapping the Raw team of Kevin Patrick and Corey Graves with the Smackdown team of
07:38 Michael Cole and Wade Barrett.
07:40 The exception of course being that Cole would also be remaining on the blue brand as well
07:43 as moving to the red one.
07:46 This is of course a whole heap of Michael Cole in our ears from week to week, with PWInsider
07:50 reporting that the Endeavor Overlords want to establish Cole as the face of the product
07:55 going forward.
07:56 While fans are rather confused by the change, it seems as if the feeling is shared by one
07:59 current commentator within the company also, as NXT's Booker T discussed the decision
08:03 on his Hall of Fame podcast.
08:05 Booker's feeling of perplexity towards the decision is not only because of the toll that
08:09 doing both shows may have on poor Michael Cole, but also why WWE decided to not give
08:13 an opportunity on the main roster to long-time NXT voice Vic Joseph instead.
08:19 Booker said Cole ain't never going to be able to retire, he can forget about it.
08:22 It's hard finding the next Michael Cole too, but I'm glad in a lot of ways, but
08:26 I'm perplexed in certain ways just because I'm waiting on Vic to get a shot.
08:30 I'm waiting on Vic Joseph to get a piece of the action, champagne wishes, caviar dreams
08:35 and all that.
08:36 I have no idea what any of that means.
08:38 Joseph did previously have a brief stint on WWE's main roster on Raw in 2019, but has
08:42 not received another chance since being NXT's lead commentator since August 2020.
08:47 How do you feel about WWE's commentary changes though, and what would you have done to make
08:52 things different?
08:53 The answer is probably Mara Rinaldo, but let us know in the comments down below.
08:56 With us now in the 8th month of 2023 and the Endeavor deal nearing its completion, it seems
09:00 as if finally WWE are set to bust out the old checkbook once again and start signing
09:05 some talent.
09:06 Because yes, despite this time last year where we saw anyone and everyone return to the company,
09:11 2023 has obviously been very quiet for signings reportedly due to the aforementioned Endeavor
09:16 acquisition.
09:17 You gotta stay lean, you gotta stay foxed for corporate acquisitions.
09:20 And now with Kairi Sane seemingly on her way back in the autumn, Nick Eldis potentially
09:24 joining as a producer, which is still weird, and Carlito also...somewhere, an orchard maybe,
09:31 there may be another to officially add to the recruitment list.
09:34 This is former AEW star Brian Pillman Jr, who was previously reported to be potentially
09:39 joining WWE following the expiration of his AEW deal last month.
09:43 Pillman was reportedly at the WWE Performance Center shortly after his AEW departure with
09:48 a deal reportedly in place between the two parties as of two weeks ago.
09:52 And now it seems as if we have some extra confirmation that Pillman will in fact be
09:55 heading to WWE, as Fightful Select have confirmed that the second generation star is in the process
10:00 of relocating to Florida and is believed to have now signed with the company according
10:04 to PWInsider.
10:06 Brian Pillman's got a son.
10:08 PWInsider also notes that Pillman was even slated to be in attendance at last night's
10:12 NXT in Orlando, however it's currently unclear whether that happened.
10:16 Moving across to Pillman's now former home of AEW, and it's time to take a peek at
10:20 those collision ratings.
10:22 You know the ones.
10:24 Went up against SummerSlam.
10:26 And yeah, yeah, yeah, it went about as well as expected.
10:32 Because after a very strong showing in both viewership and the 18-49 demo for the week
10:36 prior to the July 29th episode with 739,000 viewers and 0.27 rating respectively, the
10:43 highest in both since the June 17th premiere, things went way worse this week.
10:50 According to WrestleNomics, the August 5th collision finished 16th overall among cable
10:54 originals and dropped around 43% in viewers, scoring around 417,000 on average.
11:00 Collision also drew just 0.13 in the 18-49 demo, a drop of over 50% on the week prior.
11:08 Those numbers are the show's lowest since its existence began.
11:11 Since time immemorial.
11:12 However, in AEW's defence, not only was there SummerSlam to contend with, but also
11:16 UFC in the anticipated Jake Paul vs Nate Diaz boxing match.
11:20 But still.
11:21 Yikes.
11:22 That's a sore one.
11:23 That's a sore one.
11:24 It's normally the bit where I go happy Friday, but it's just, it's Wednesday,
11:31 so two more days of work.
11:34 Suck it, fellas.
11:34 (upbeat music)
