00:00 Did Taylor Swift fans cause seismic activity? Washington State seismologist Jackie Kaplan
00:06 Auerbach examined seismic wave data from a station located outside of Lumen Field in Seattle,
00:12 where Taylor performed concerts as part of her ERAs tour.
00:16 So what did the seismologist find? She tells CNN that the activity at the stadium on the nights of
00:23 Taylor's concerts caused seismic activity equivalent to a 2.3 magnitude earthquake.
00:30 She explains to the outlet, "For Taylor Swift, I collected about 10 hours of data where rhythm
00:36 controlled the behavior. The music, the speakers, the beat, all that energy can drive into the
00:42 ground and shake it." The seismologist, who was also a geology professor at Western Washington
00:48 University, performed the analysis after a person in the Pacific Northwest Earthquake Group,
00:54 which she moderates, questioned the differences in signal between a Swift concert and a Seattle
01:00 Seahawks game, which are also played at Lumen Field, and can seat about 70,000 people.
01:06 In comparison to the 2011 Beastquake, a moment when fans responded excitedly to a touchdown
01:13 by running back Marshawn "Beast Mode" Lynch, there was a clear winner between the two.
01:19 Kaplan Auerbach tells King 5 News, "I will say Swifties have it in the back. This was much
01:25 bigger than the Beastquake in terms of the raw amplitude of shaking, and it went on for a whole
01:31 lot longer, of course. The Beastquake was a moment in time, but thus far the Swifties really have
01:37 Seahawks fans beat." However, there could be another culprit. Based off of graphs posted to
01:44 Twitter, she notes that data from the concert may not be caused by the fans. It may be the sound
01:50 system. And while the science speaks for itself, fans attending Swift's Seattle shows detail the
01:56 experience from inside the venue. One Facebook user writes, "I was at the Sunday performance.
02:03 That stadium really shook. It definitely felt like an earthquake. The bass tone was so intense
02:09 it felt like it was going through my body. Sounds odd, but that's how it felt. Concerts are always
02:15 loud, but this one was different. Nobody can shake it off like Taylor Swift and her fans."
02:20 And this may just be a scientific fact.
