Former US president Donald Trump is facing a fresh charge in the Secret Documents case. The fresh charge alleges that he attempted to obstruct the investigation into the mishandling of top-secret documents by conspiring to delete surveillance footage at his Mar-a-Lago property in Florida. Yesterday, the new charges came as Trump said that his lawyers met with Justice Department officials ahead of a separate expected indictment over his alleged efforts to overturn the result of the 2020 election. Federal prosecutors unsealed the new indictment targeting the front-runner in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, who is set to go on trial as the election heats up in May of next year. Yesterday’s superseding indictment accuses Donald Trump of acting with his co-defendant in the case, personal aide Waltine “Walt” Nauta…and a new defendant, property manager Carlos de Oliveira, to delete security camera footage at Mar-a-Lago. Trump has now been charged with one more count of wilful retention of defence information and two of obstruction.

00:00 Former US President Donald Trump is facing a slew of fresh charges in the secret documents
00:15 case.
00:16 The fresh charges allege that he attempted to obstruct the investigation into the mishandling
00:21 of top secret documents by conspiring to delete surveillance footage at his Mar-a-Lago property
00:26 in Florida.
00:28 Yesterday, the new charges came as Trump said that his lawyers met with Justice Department
00:33 officials ahead of a separate expected indictment over his alleged efforts to overturn the result
00:39 of the 2020 election.
00:42 Federal prosecutors unsealed the new indictment targeting the frontrunner in the 2024 Republican
00:48 presidential primary, who is set to go on trial as the election heats up in May of next
00:52 year.
00:53 Yesterday's superseding indictment accuses Donald Trump of acting with his co-defendant
00:58 in the case, personal aide Walton "Walt" Nauta, and a new defendant, property manager Carlos
01:04 de Oliveira, to delete security camera footage at Mar-a-Lago.
01:09 Trump has now been charged with one more count of willful retention of defense information
01:14 and two of obstruction.
01:16 The twice-impeached former president was first indicted in the classified documents case
01:20 last month, accused of endangering national security by holding on to top-secret nuclear
01:26 and defense information after leaving the White House.
01:30 According to the indictment, Trump kept the files, which included records from the Pentagon,
01:35 CIA, and National Security Agency, unsecured at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida and thwarted
01:40 official efforts to retrieve them.
01:43 The fresh charges add to the existing counts of willful retention of national defense information
01:48 and charges of conspiracy to obstruct justice, making false statements, and other offenses
01:53 to which Trump had pleaded not guilty last month.
01:57 The new indictment recounts a conversation between de Oliveira and a fourth unnamed employee
02:03 in which de Oliveira says that the boss wants the server deleted.
02:07 It also adds an extra count under the Espionage Act related to Trump allegedly retaining a
02:12 classified document concerning military activity in a foreign country.
02:17 Trump has repeatedly attacked the investigation as a political witch hunt.
02:21 The latest charge against him adds to a growing list of legal problems for him.
02:25 He is currently awaiting trial for a hush money case in which he faces 34 felony counts.
02:30 Apart from that case, he is also facing civil charges in a defamation case and Georgia prosecutors
02:36 are still weighing whether or not to press charges over an alleged effort of overturning
02:41 the election results there.
