00:03 My first encounter with magic when I was five years old,
00:07 I happened to go to [INAUDIBLE] and I saw a magic show
00:11 for roadside magician.
00:13 And I was really intrigued because that was the first time
00:17 I was seeing magic.
00:18 I just ran up to the magician after the show,
00:20 and I said, can you please teach me?
00:22 So sometimes kids just say anything,
00:25 so he thought I'm just talking nonsense.
00:27 Just to get rid of me, he taught me two tricks.
00:30 And I learned it so well, so I took two or three of his props
00:33 and started performing there for the audience.
00:36 So the audience loved it, you know, and such a young girl
00:38 performing some magic.
00:39 And they started coming to me and said,
00:41 can I get your autograph?
00:42 Can I get your photograph?
00:43 So I thought, this is so wonderful.
00:45 Like, even if I get full marks in my studies,
00:47 don't take my autograph or picture with me.
00:50 So I think it was the recognition which
00:51 really caught my eye.
00:52 And post that, there was no looking back.
00:54 I think post that, magic really chose me.
00:57 I really wanted to learn magic, but there
01:08 were no avenues at that time.
01:09 We didn't have YouTubes and exposure
01:12 to the international world.
01:13 I was really determined to learn magic,
01:16 and therefore I found out ways.
01:17 So when people used to show me magic,
01:20 I used to always ask them, can you please teach me one trick?
01:23 And they would be like, oh, you're too young to learn it.
01:25 Oh, it's not your cup of tea, et cetera.
01:28 So I would say, OK, fine.
01:29 I'm going to figure out a way.
01:31 And so they would show me a trick,
01:34 and I would try to figure out how it's done,
01:36 and show it back to them and say, you know,
01:37 this is an old trick.
01:38 When I was eight years old, I met with my guru,
01:46 who's Mr. William Zimbago.
01:47 And he taught me the big illusions,
01:49 things like David Copperfield on stage,
01:51 you know, vanishing, your assistants,
01:53 vanishing the Taj Mahal, et cetera.
01:54 I think that was a dream as a child,
01:56 that I want to do such big magics, big stuff, big props,
02:00 needed assistance.
02:01 So I remember my first show at the age of eight
02:04 was at the Bharti Vidya Bhavan in Mumbai with 45 assistants.
02:09 So I'm commanding 45 people around me.
02:12 But after I finished my engineering,
02:14 I had to take a career choice.
02:16 So I did make an effort, rather, to do an engineering job.
02:19 But I really felt that this is not really
02:21 what I am meant to do.
02:23 In a place like India, magic is never
02:27 considered as something where you can earn money.
02:31 I've always wanted to do something different
02:34 and take it to a level wherein I'm
02:36 able to give magic the respect that it really deserves.
02:40 So I started finding out different kind
02:43 of applications of magic, where you can use magic as therapy
02:48 for special children, autistic children, where you can actually
02:51 train them in a fun way with occupational therapy,
02:55 fine motor skills, et cetera.
02:56 So I started finding different applications onto it.
02:59 And I started using magic as my language.
03:01 So I came up with an environmental magic show.
03:03 And I received a United Nations award for the same.
03:06 It's never been easy being a woman in a man's world
03:17 for any profession.
03:18 So it was the same with magic also.
03:20 From learning magic, to being heckled at at events,
03:24 to even being disqualified at an event,
03:27 because they thought that I was not
03:30 good enough to be competing amongst the people, et cetera.
03:34 And they asked me, oh, you're so young.
03:38 You're going to be talking to all of us.
03:40 What is this young girl going to do?
03:42 So I think that's something that I face every day.
03:47 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:50 What really prevents women from getting into magic
03:55 is also perceived as something supernatural
03:59 by a lot of people.
04:00 There's a lot of black magic kind of thing
04:04 associated with it.
04:05 And a lot of women are kept away from it,
04:08 because it kind of scares people away.
04:15 So my message to all the little girls who
04:17 want to get into the field of magic
04:19 is, please, follow your dreams.
04:22 If you believe in magic, have your sense of wonder with you.
04:26 And no matter whether you choose magic or any other profession,
04:29 know one thing for sure.
04:30 Nothing is impossible.
04:32 And do your best, and God will do the rest.
