00:06 - Mickey Featherstone said,
00:11 "If somebody was talking to me,
00:12 "I would just take a bottle of beer,
00:14 "break it down on the counter,
00:15 "and I would rip their face."
00:17 - To take a life from somebody, that's not a bad thing.
00:19 Cunanan seemed to enjoy it,
00:21 it didn't really bother him.
00:23 - The Italian mafia always kills for a reason.
00:25 The Irish don't kill for a reason.
00:27 The whole West Side was dead.
00:30 We killed it all.
00:33 (dramatic music)
00:39 (dramatic music)
00:52 - West of Manhattan, May 1977.
00:56 (dramatic music)
00:59 - He was a loan shark's loan shark.
01:08 In addition to earning money,
01:10 he lent money to loan sharks to lend out.
01:14 - The number one loan shark in the United States of America,
01:16 no question about it.
01:18 - Stein thinks that the Irish gangster
01:20 brought him to this bar to talk business.
01:23 But Cunanan has other plans.
01:27 He wants to take hold of the black book of the loan shark,
01:29 where all of his debtors' names are inscribed.
01:33 By holding this notebook,
01:35 Cunanan will be able to take control of Stein's affairs.
01:38 - Ruby Stein's notebook
01:39 listed all the people he lent money to.
01:40 So Ruby Stein is no longer around,
01:42 which means I got your notebook,
01:45 you now owe me the money.
01:47 - Stein is trapped.
01:49 Before he even had time to understand,
01:52 Cunanan's men, including Billy Beatty,
01:54 ambush him.
01:56 - I slammed the door, knocked on the door,
01:58 and I heard boom, boom, boom.
02:01 - Stein is dead.
02:03 Now Cunanan must make the body disappear.
02:06 The Irish take his body to the back room
02:10 and cut it into pieces.
02:11 - We found an arm in a dump bag
02:15 and a leg in another black bag.
02:17 - They then throw Stein's body into the East River
02:22 before returning to the bar.
02:23 - He had disappeared.
02:27 - Codini.
02:29 - We cleaned up quickly, we told Mickey,
02:31 "Let the bartender in, we have to get the bar open."
02:33 And then we saw the customers come in
02:35 with their chickens to have a few drinks.
02:38 - Without the body, the police can't open an investigation.
02:41 Jimmy Cunanan is untouchable.

03:04 (speaking in foreign language)
03:10 - Even though it was a pretty big neighborhood,
03:15 everybody knew each other.
03:16 Everybody knew somebody's older brother, older sister,
03:20 an uncle, aunt, uncle.
03:21 (speaking in foreign language)
03:26 - It was sort of a code of our side
03:29 that you didn't talk about people in particular ways,
03:31 because if something was wrong,
03:33 they don't come to the investigation.
03:34 They've been like that for generations.
03:36 - It was like the law of the land in a way.
03:39 You know, you don't squeal.
03:41 And people that did squeal would have a problem.
03:43 (speaking in foreign language)
03:48 (dramatic music)
03:51 - The press was ignoring the Irish mafia on the West Side
04:13 because they weren't interested in guys
04:15 that you wanted to emulate.

04:52 (dramatic music)
04:55 - Mickey's plan is that he was doing a lot of kidnapping.
05:15 And sometimes you kidnap people,
05:18 you leave some money for them and you release them.
05:20 (dramatic music)

10:26 - Somebody in more conventional society
10:33 would agree with doing such a thing,
10:35 but this someone who had been young
10:37 and had no sense of limits,
10:40 he had altered for us his reputation.
10:43 (dramatic music)
10:44 (speaking in foreign language)

20:50 (speaking in foreign language)
20:54 - The police radio comes in.
21:03 Shots fired in the air as they were coming to a location.
21:07 And I said to my driver, "That's Mickey Spillane,"
21:10 'cause I knew where he lived.
21:11 And we get there and we see Spillane
21:13 is laying between the gold parka and the car.
21:16 - The gold parka.
21:19 - Jimmy was happy as a pig in the (beep).
21:23 He was so thrilled that he had his whole life
21:28 waiting to kill this guy.
21:30 And he was gone.
21:30 (speaking in foreign language)
21:36 (speaking in foreign language)
21:44 (gun firing)
21:48 (speaking in foreign language)
21:52 - His reputation for being a mental patient was on it.
22:03 And it was getting worse in the neighborhood.
22:06 They knew he was a psychopath.
22:07 So, Kunan used that on the safe making idea of,
22:11 "I'm gonna send Mickey."
22:12 (speaking in foreign language)
22:16 (speaking in foreign language)
22:20 (gun firing)
22:23 (speaking in foreign language)
22:27 (sirens blaring)
22:30 (speaking in foreign language)
22:34 - We get called to a meeting
22:41 and we're briefed on what was gonna be taken on.
22:43 (speaking in foreign language)
23:13 - We would be overt.
23:14 We were going to hit all these places
23:16 and we'd harass them, we'd scream at people
23:18 and we'd hit people against walls and all that stuff.
23:21 And he was always on the lookout to see
23:24 where the bad guys were after we left.
23:27 (dramatic music)
23:28 (speaking in foreign language)
23:32 - You start early in the morning,
23:37 you arrive late at night,
23:38 you try to get patterns on what they're doing,
23:40 what they're doing in the way they're going.
23:43 And until the case, we did a full surveillance.
23:47 (dramatic music)
23:49 - Even within the team, we would hear,
24:01 "Hey, guys, you know what?
24:01 "You should work on some real criminals.
24:03 "They're just little chaps."
24:05 - If Jimmy Kunan and the way they took us on
24:08 were to come this far right now,
24:10 we'd take them with open hearts.
24:12 Clean cut, and we'd give them a place in the city of crime.
24:15 I mean, look now, how many years
24:17 they've taken on the gangsters that they were.
24:20 (speaking in foreign language)
24:24 (dramatic music)
24:27 (speaking in foreign language)
24:31 (speaking in foreign language)
24:35 (dramatic music)
24:37 (speaking in foreign language)
24:41 - He doesn't sit down with just anybody.
25:02 So at the same time, they've been told,
25:05 "The boss wants to see you, so you come to see him."
25:08 And you come, so you don't come and you say it's a problem.
25:11 (speaking in foreign language)
25:31 (dramatic music)
25:34 (speaking in foreign language)
25:38 (dramatic music)
25:41 (speaking in foreign language)

25:54 (speaking in foreign language)
25:58 (dramatic music)
26:01 (dramatic music)
26:04 (speaking in foreign language)
26:11 - She went there with some of the guys,
26:27 and their idea was just to sit at a restaurant
26:30 and just keep an eye on him,
26:31 and keep an eye on his eyes and ears,
26:32 and see what was going on.
26:33 And if anything went so wrong,
26:34 they'd make a phone call,
26:35 and the rest of the troops would come in,
26:36 and try to spice up if they had to.
26:38 (dramatic music)
26:41 (speaking in foreign language)

27:14 (speaking in foreign language)
27:18 (speaking in foreign language)
27:42 - The protection of saying, you're with us,
27:45 but you need to stop doing these random killings.
27:50 You need to only do it with our consent.
27:53 (dramatic music)
27:54 (speaking in foreign language)
27:58 (speaking in foreign language)
28:09 (dramatic music)
28:12 (speaking in foreign language)
28:18 - How are you gonna learn to handle the role of its boss
28:34 in watching the firefighter?
28:36 You take in how Michael Corleone grows
28:39 from being somewhat of an innocent
28:41 to a killer, to a head of a family.
28:44 So he watches that, and he thinks he's learning from it.

35:31 (explosion booms)
35:40 - Billy Bokun had a red birthmark
35:42 down the middle of his face.
35:44 So obviously if he were to commit a murder,
35:46 he would easily identify by any witness.
35:49 So Bokun used tape to take a cover
35:52 of his birthmark.
35:55 - Mickey Featherstone got it into his head
35:58 that Bokun had done the make-out
36:01 assisted by other gang members
36:03 to make Billy Bokun look like Mickey Featherstone.

42:07 from gang members.
42:10 You look at the prosecutor who's asking the questions
42:13 or you look at the defense attorney.
42:15 You don't need to look at the defendants.
