As 1.3 million people are expected to fly through Newcastle Airport this year we ask them for some travel advice and see where people are travelling to during the summer holidays
Transcript
00:00 I think the holiday, the main holiday for the North East Travelling public has always
00:04 been really important. I think they're prioritising it. People work hard all year and they definitely
00:09 deserve their holiday.
00:10 With the summer holidays starting, people will be jetting off on holiday, whether it's
00:14 for a city break or for some relaxing time off.
00:18 Newcastle Airport is expected to be busy this year, with millions of people set to be visiting.
00:24 So between the Scottish and English school holidays, over 1.3 million people will be
00:30 passing through the airport, which is 10% up on last year. So yeah, a lot of people
00:34 travelling for the first time.
00:36 With so many people expected through the doors at Newcastle Airport, we asked for some advice
00:41 for those who are planning to fly this summer.
00:44 They'll be pleased to hear Newcastle's an easy airport to get through. We'd urge people
00:48 to get here at the time that the airline says, they don't need to get here any earlier. Prepare
00:54 for security. The security rules haven't changed here at Newcastle Airport yet. So get your
01:00 liquids in. If you're putting liquids in your hand luggage, get the clear plastic bag and
01:06 the 100ml maximum containers for all of those liquids. So they go into the clear plastic
01:11 bag. When they're approaching security, make sure you get your belts off, etc. Get your
01:17 laptops or your iPads out of your bag and then you'll be in good shape.
01:21 The airport is always evolving with new facilities and restaurants and every year the airport
01:27 changes. So if you're travelling through Newcastle Airport this year, you'll see some of the
01:31 changes that they are making.
01:35 We've got Starbucks back, Landside, which is absolutely brilliant. We've got a new currency
01:39 operator change group, both Landside and Airside. When people go through security, they'll see
01:44 that we've done half of the upgrade of the security area with new decor and aesthetics.
01:51 So that's a much more pleasant experience. And then when they get into the departure
01:55 lounge, we've got a new outlet called Soul and Grain, which is fresh produce and healthier
02:02 options for people. So the airport is always changing. So when they come through this year,
02:07 they'll notice differences and again, when they come through next year, they'll see it's
02:11 changed all over again.
02:13 And of course, as the airport evolves, more and more operators are being added to the
02:17 list with plenty of new destinations. But it seems to be that the people of the North
02:22 East are sticking to those all-time favourite destinations for a holiday this year.
02:28 Still a lot of the old favourites, the likes of the Canaries, Ibiza, Mallorca and mainland
02:35 Spain, the Greek islands and Turkey. But you're right, people are travelling further afield
02:39 via our hubs. What I've heard over the last few days is the likes of Miami, New York,
02:45 Istanbul, Bangkok and the rest of Thailand.
02:49 We've also got two new operators. We've got Aegean, which is the Greek flag carrier at
02:53 Athens and then we've got Sun Express operating to Antalya in Turkey. Both of them have got
02:59 off to a very good start. So new options for people travelling.
