00:00 Welcome back. It's estimated breast cancer will take the lives of nearly 41,000 women in this country this year alone.
00:06 One of the most powerful ways to reduce that number, of course, is to raise awareness about the disease.
00:11 We've been promising this all morning. Madam Meshugganah, she's Kristen Alonzo.
00:16 She's a Savannah Derby Devil. And here in our studio to do something that's very brave,
00:19 she's gonna shave her head. And well, actually, I'm gonna do it. How are you?
00:24 Good. How are you today?
00:25 I thought maybe you would back out because this is huge.
00:28 In truth, you know, the woman that you are gonna be shaving your head in honor of is more brave. Don't you agree?
00:34 I do. Blair Schrautemeier is 26 years old. She's a Savannah resident and on Saturday
00:39 she had surgery, a double mastectomy to remove breast cancer.
00:42 Truly, she's really going through something, but she's so optimistic about going into remission and kicking this thing.
00:48 So you're gonna shave your head. I am. A lot of her friends are writing the same thing tonight. That's awesome.
00:53 There's a huge benefit tonight.
00:55 We have all the details on that on our website, thecoastalsource.com.
00:58 People trying to raise money for her because she has no health insurance.
01:01 And that's a big problem. And today a lot of people, even when they do have health insurance,
01:05 can't pay all the bills that are associated with this. You can't work with that kind of situation.
01:09 So, we're pulling together to help her out. All right, we've kind of put together this like makeshift
01:13 salon here. I am not
01:19 at all. Are you okay with this? I'm okay with that. If we can get it shaved later and clean it up if we need to.
01:25 We will send it somewhere.
01:26 If I start hurting you. Look at these little clippers here. They're brand new, but they're kind of small.
01:32 And they work. Well, we're gonna be doing that a little bit later on. But how's your husband?
01:37 Oh, he's okay with it. He's used to me doing crazy things. I just called him on Friday and let him know I'd be doing this.
01:41 He thinks it's great. He likes Blair. He loves the Real Pub as well, just like I do.
01:46 She works at the Real Pub. Probably if you didn't catch it, we've been talking to her all morning.
01:50 And they're showing how just everybody at the Real Pub is just, oh, they're pulling for her.
01:54 And they're really trying to help out. So, we're gonna be coming back in just a little while.
01:59 Buzz you bald. Is that okay with you? Sounds great. I can't wait. This is all for a great cause. We'll be right back.
02:07 Thanks so much for watching. Good morning, here at WJCO.
02:09 [Music]
02:15 Savannah Derby Devil Madame Meshugana, this is Kristen Alonzo, is here with me to have her head shaved bald.
02:21 She's gonna do this in honor of 26-year-old Savannah resident Blair Schrautemeier, who today, actually on Saturday, she had surgery to remove breast cancer.
02:29 Now, this young woman has no health insurance, and the community is coming together to help raise money for Blair, pay her bills while she tries to beat cancer.
02:38 So, are you ready for this? I am. Let's get started. Oh, my goodness.
02:42 These are little clippers here. Should I make a pass? I guess... Oh, my goodness. Here we go. You ready?
02:48 Mm-hmm. I'm so nervous. You got it.
02:50 Oh! Oh, my goodness. It's like really... Are you sure? I'm sure. It's fine.
02:58 Wow. She is doing this to help Blair not feel alone. A lot are shaving their heads. I cannot believe I'm doing this.
03:06 Oh! Is it hurting? No, no, no. You're doing great. I guess because these are new clippers here.
03:12 Yeah. You are a Savannah Derby Devil, and you... She's awesome, first of all. I have seen her.
03:19 I love to say this is gonna make you more aerodynamic. However, you already wear a helmet. We do.
03:25 Well, we really appreciate you doing this because tonight is a big fundraiser at the Rail Pub in downtown Savannah.
03:33 Everybody's gonna be out there eating, drinking, having a good time, and raising money for Blair, who does not have any health insurance.
03:42 Oh, I'm kind of shocked here. I gotta be honest with you. I shaved my husband's head. He's in the Army, and he has to have short hair.
03:48 But, wow. Woo! It's nice for summer. Yeah, this is gonna keep you cool.
03:53 But if you want more information on the event tonight, go on to our website, thecoastalsource.com,
04:00 and you can get all the details on what's gonna be going on tonight.
04:03 People are gonna be tossing money up into pink umbrellas hanging from the ceiling. That's why we got you in a pink towel today.
04:09 It's the color for breast cancer awareness. Oh, I tell you what. You got a great face for this short hair.
04:15 I can tell you. You really wear this well. Look at this hair just falling off. You're doing great.
04:21 I'm gonna keep at this here, and we're gonna go to a break, but Kristen is quite, quite, quite brave.
04:27 Our Savannah Derby Devil right here. We'll be right back. Thanks so much for watching.
04:31 Good morning. I'm WJCL, The Coastal Source.
04:34 Okay, so Madam Ms. Sugana, Kristen Alonzo, she's a Savannah Derby Devil.
04:40 She has graciously agreed to lose her hair every last strand to support a 26-year-old Savannah resident who was battling breast cancer.
04:48 Blair Schraudemeier underwent breast cancer surgery on Saturday.
04:51 She had a double mastectomy all because of this disease, and you're here today to show support for her,
04:57 and a lot of people are shaving their heads. The Rail Pub is where she works, where Blair works,
05:02 and people are just really rallying around her.
05:05 She has no health insurance, and that's the issue here, and everybody's gonna be trying to raise some money tonight at the Rail Pub in downtown Savannah.
05:12 You can get information on that on our website, thecoastalsource.com.
05:16 Look at her. She's sitting here with us. This is quite funky. Maybe we're gonna start a trend here. Quite progressive.
05:22 I'm gonna want to do it like this, though.
05:24 We're gonna finish up this here, but in the meantime, have you gotten a call from your husband yet on your cell phone saying, "Oh, my goodness!"
05:31 I haven't checked. I'm not sure if he knew how short it would be.
05:34 But you said he's very much in support of this, huh?
05:37 Yes.
05:38 Wow. I gotta tell you here, I have never shaved a head down this short.
05:45 I'm trying to get it even here. I'm gonna have to do some touch-ups probably after the show.
05:50 But you are so brave for doing this, and we really appreciate it because this is such a good cause.
05:55 Everybody's gonna be tossing money up into hanging umbrellas.
05:58 Maybe you've caught the video earlier in our broadcast, but we're gonna be trying to raise money for Blair because, you know, it's tough.
06:05 It's tough when you get that kind of surgery like that, and you can't work, and you're trying to recover and go through something so difficult.
06:13 It's just wonderful to know that people are supporting you.
06:16 So great job here. Let me get these final patches. Let's see.
06:21 I got a real funky patch right on top of your head.
06:25 You know the whole, like, "I cook, you clean"? I won't make you clean.
06:29 Chase, you wanna clean up the hair, actually?
06:33 He's already said, "Who's gonna clean up this hair?"
06:35 I should put it in a baggie for you.
06:38 You're gonna share with your family one day. You're not gonna believe what I did on TV in Savannah.
06:43 Oh, gosh. I think, you know what, maybe my clippers are starting to...
06:46 Well, that's...we're gonna even it up for her, but look at that.
06:49 You look...you actually have a beautiful face, and we really appreciate you doing this.
06:54 All for breast cancer awareness. Awesome job, Kristen.
06:57 And tonight, head on out to the Rail Pub downtown Savannah.
07:00 Get information on our website, thecoastalsource.com.
07:03 Thanks for being with Good Morning. We'll be right back.
