00:00 Alright, Lara, for this first showing, this is a bank foreclosure.
00:04 This house is 1,300 square feet, three bedrooms, two baths.
00:09 It's been on the market for about two months, and they're asking $77,000 for it.
00:14 It's kind of a mess.
00:15 You can barely see the house from in front with all the trees and shrubs.
00:18 Still only $59 a square foot.
00:20 Alright, come on in, guys.
00:24 Looks like it's got some updates on it.
00:27 We've got newer windows, hardwood floors.
00:29 They really look like they're in nice shape.
00:31 Plaster walls.
00:32 Plaster walls, wet plaster, real solid foundation.
00:33 Got a fireplace.
00:35 I like it.
00:36 It's cute.
00:37 Here's the dining room.
00:39 Hardwood floors, natural lighting.
00:41 I can see you inviting mom and dad over here to cook.
00:43 We can do that.
00:44 The kitchen's a little small.
00:46 It's tiny.
00:47 Got a ceramic tile floor, oak cabinets, Formica tops, really durable, and a stainless steel
00:52 sink.
00:53 It feels small.
00:54 It feels really small.
00:55 What can we do, dad?
00:57 We're going to have to do a lot in here.
00:59 Take this wall out, open it up to the living room, maybe move this island over a little
01:03 bit to give you a little more space.
01:04 It's going to take some work in here, but it's doable.
01:07 Alright, here's a cute little bathroom.
01:10 Original tile, really in good condition.
01:12 It is.
01:13 I like the fixtures.
01:14 You like the black accent?
01:15 It looks pretty nice.
01:16 Yeah, I don't mind this.
01:17 It's a nice shower.
01:18 Next, they check out two bedrooms.
01:25 Then head upstairs to the master.
01:27 You're going to like this room.
01:29 It's a cute little sitting room, TV room.
01:31 Put a little plasma on the wall.
01:33 This is exactly what you need for all that stuff that's still in my house.
01:37 Right, dad.
01:38 Let's move into the bedroom.
01:41 Nice master bedroom and voila.
01:43 Oh man, Laura, you could put everything you need in this room.
01:48 Perfect.
01:49 The hardwood floors up here are really nice.
01:52 The sun rises in the east, so it'll come in through this window.
01:55 It'll give you a good wake up in the morning.
01:56 That is nice.
01:57 It's a good size bedroom.
01:58 It'll work out for you.
01:59 Alright, let's go downstairs.
02:00 Oh, take a look at this.
02:04 This is the party house.
02:05 Oh wow.
02:07 My own bar, finally.
02:08 You've got pine planks on the floor.
02:11 Elevate the floor.
02:12 Now the floor is softer on your feet, so you can party a little bit longer.
02:15 Just better than any room in our house.
02:16 I can have a little fun down here.
02:17 You've got glass blocks.
02:18 I need a bartender.
02:19 I like this.
02:20 Great.
02:21 I'll be a bartender.
02:22 Can you pour?
02:23 Anytime.
02:24 They take a quick look at the house.
02:27 Laura has a new look to go along with her new house in Harper Woods, Michigan.
02:31 But picking a hairstyle was easy compared to choosing which place to buy.
02:36 Priced at $77,000, her first option is a 1,300 square foot, three bedroom, two bath bungalow.
02:44 That's hardwood floors throughout and a fireplace in the living room.
02:47 There's a finished basement, big backyard, and a two car garage.
02:50 My concern is it might be too much yard for me.
02:52 The lot is huge.
02:53 The room sizes are small.
02:55 With a $75,000 price tag, her second option is a 1,400 square foot, three bedroom, one
03:01 and a half bath home.
03:03 It has hardwood floors throughout the home.
03:05 There's a fenced in yard and a two car attached garage.
03:07 My concern is that the basement is not quite finished.
03:10 Option number three is priced the lowest at $70,000, but the three bedroom, one bath house
03:16 is also the smallest with only 1,000 square feet.
03:19 I love the tear down bungalow that my dad likes so much.
03:22 It has hardwood floors throughout the house.
03:24 It's got a nice formal dining room.
03:25 My concern is that there's a lot of work to be done and although my dad loves that, I'm
03:29 not sure I'm up for it.
03:31 So which one did she choose?
03:43 I ended up choosing the little brick bungalow with the finished basement and the big backyard.
03:50 Buying this house was like a new beginning for me.
03:52 I feel totally liberated.
03:53 I cut my hair, moved into a new place and I feel awesome.
03:56 Hi, house hunters.
03:59 It's been five months.
04:00 I have a new puppy and a great new house to go with it, of course.
04:03 Come on in.
04:04 This is my favorite room of the house.
04:07 We've done a lot of changes in this room to really brighten it up and make it my favorite
04:11 living space.
04:12 I got a new flat screen TV.
04:13 I redid the fireplace.
04:15 My dad put in a new hearth.
04:17 My mom picked out some great blinds that my dad had made.
04:20 These were my grandparents' chairs, three generations now that my dad renovated.
04:24 I didn't do a lot to the dining room but changed up the color, made it a little bit brighter.
04:29 I got a nice new dining room table.
04:31 It's a fun, bright place to eat.
04:33 Let me show you what we did in the kitchen.
04:36 Of course, my dad's still hard at work in the kitchen.
04:38 Five months ago, this was a wall.
04:41 So luckily, I can get from the couch to the fridge to the sink in a snap.
04:46 We really made a lot of changes to this room.
04:49 We brightened it up a lot with the paint color.
04:51 We kept the cabinets, just painted them, threw on some new hardware, got some appliances.
04:55 What else did we do, Dad?
04:56 We had to raise this refrigerator up so that you didn't have to lean over to get your ice.
05:00 And every so often, something new came up, like every 10 minutes, and we accommodated
05:05 you.
05:06 I'm so glad that I got this bold red in here because it's just really a fabulous color.
05:11 It only took me four times to get the color red the way you liked it.
05:14 You know, most of my clients would pay for it.
05:16 It's good to be your only client, though.
05:18 Well, you are now.
05:22 Here in my office, I kept this wall color that the previous owners had because I just
05:27 really liked this bold dark red.
05:29 And what really made it pop is the polka dot window treatments that my dad had made.
05:34 I was able to throw in some storage shelves for my printer and all my stuff and take full
05:40 advantage of the closet space that I didn't have before, living in my parents' attic.
05:44 I am able to put everything out of sight so I can really feel good in this living space.
05:49 (upbeat music)
