00:00 Nature is pretty darn scary and can even be downright shocking at times.
00:05 It's a tough world out there for a wild animal and they do what they have to to survive.
00:11 Even if that means eating their prey alive.
00:14 In this video, we're going to take a look at 6 animals that eat their prey alive.
00:29 Deep in the jungles of Indonesia live giant creatures.
00:33 These animals look like they just walked off the set of Jurassic Park and are named after
00:38 some of the most fearsome mythical creatures in history.
00:43 But perhaps the scariest thing about the Komodo dragon is how they choose to eat their meal.
00:53 These two Komodo dragons have stumbled upon an injured deer.
00:57 Before going in for their first bite, they flick their tongues to taste their prey.
01:02 Once they've decided they'd like a bite, they dive in with no intention to kill the animal
01:07 before they eat it.
01:09 That is terrifying and a brutal way for the deer to die.
01:13 But hey, that's the animal kingdom for you.
01:18 Although they might look cute and cuddly, soft and furry, bears should be handled with
01:23 extreme caution.
01:25 Bears are the largest predatory animal that lives on land and are equipped to take down
01:30 prey up to 1,500 pounds.
01:34 When they finally find their prey, bears do not kill it before they eat it.
01:39 Unlike big cats that crash the windpipe and suffocate the animal, bears simply use their
01:45 massive size to hold the prey down while they devour it alive.
01:49 This is part of what makes bear encounters so scary.
01:53 Although a bear could kill you with a few bites, it won't, preferring to eat you while
01:58 you're still conscious enough to realize what's happening.
02:05 Just like their North American relative, the wolf, African wild dogs don't overpower their
02:11 prey.
02:12 They outsmart them and run them down.
02:14 This impala can run faster and is more nimble than a pack of African wild dogs.
02:20 However, after a few miles, the impala starts to get tired.
02:25 The dogs, they can run forever.
02:28 Once the prey is exhausted, the wild dogs pounce.
02:32 But these dogs don't eat their meals out of cute little bowls like the family dog at
02:36 home.
02:37 No, these dogs eat their prey whole, alive, and still kicking.
02:45 Despite their reputation as goofy, clownish creatures, hyenas are exceptionally smart
02:51 and can even perform small calculations like counting the number of hyenas in a rival group,
02:56 then deciding on the best course of action based on those numbers.
03:01 While it's not advanced calculus, this shows that hyenas are more intelligent than most.
03:07 This intelligence is what makes their eating habits so devilish.
03:11 Despite their powerful jaws and ill temper, hyenas rarely kill an animal before devouring
03:17 it, opting instead to rip it to shreds while it's still alive and breathing.
03:25 Wolves are extremely social and intelligent animals.
03:29 Their hunting ability comes down to their ability to rely on and communicate with other
03:34 members of their pack in real time during a hunt.
03:39 One of the scariest things about wolves is how they choose to eat their prey.
03:44 A wolf doesn't have the ability to easily suffocate a large prey animal like a big cat
03:50 would.
03:51 That means the wolf typically eats its prey alive.
03:55 With large game, they start by biting and eating the snout, working their way through
04:00 the midsection until there is nothing but skin and bones left.
04:08 Crocs are the largest lizards on Earth and are truly dinosaurs among us.
04:14 Their sharp teeth protrude from their powerful snapping jaws like a giant serrated knife.
04:21 They relax in the water holes where they know the land animals come to get a drink when
04:25 they're thirsty.
04:27 Get too close, the crocs will drag you under so fast it'll make your head spin.
04:33 Once they get you in the water, you're in their world.
04:36 Crocs can kill in so many ways.
04:38 They can chomp you, twist you, or drown you.
04:42 But there's one thing we know for sure, and that's that crocodiles rarely if ever kill
04:47 their prey before devouring it.
