Shocking footage has emerged of a women's soccer team in Congo chasing after a referee and attacking him after they were reportedly denied a penalty.

Players from DC Motema Pembe targeted the match official on the pitch with five members of the team running after him following a seemingly controversial decision.

The referee managed to break free from the initial charge, running off the field of play as he made his way onto the Athletics track circling it but the onslaught continued.

One male individual is seen trying to get involved next to the team benches on the sidelines by swinging a punch but he fails to land the blow. It is not known if the man belonged to the same team.

The referee managed to escape for a brief period by running behind the dugout but he was then surrounded again just outside the tunnel.

Some players caught up and one kicked out at him while the male individual threw more punches.

The referee tried to take cover and cannot be seen in the video at this stage of the attack.

Stadium staff tried to break up the beatdown and prevented the same player who kicked out from picking up a bucket.

A staff member managed to pull the referee free and usher him down the tunnel, but some players did not relent and followed.

The media account which shared the video reported that DC Motema Pembe was not given a penalty when they were losing 5-1 against TP Mazembe Women in Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The country's Football Association has suspended some DC Motema Pembe players and has launched an investigation into the incident, according to GhanaWeb.
