I wrote “The Ghosts Of Guthrie Green” in 2013 after being told the real story of the Tulsa Race Massacre by Mike Day, local musician and member of the cast of, “Red Dirt On 66”, (a movie that was being filmed in Oklahoma at that time).

We were in downtown Tulsa on Location and while we were waiting between takes he said, “you know that Black people were shot down on the very place we’re standing. Their homes and businesses set on fire, too…” He was well-educated on the subject and knew the facts as he went on to describe the Massacre. I did some research and found those facts to be true. Unbelievable yes, but oh my God, true.

Even though I had lived a third of my life in Tulsa, I never actually knew until then.

I’d heard about the “Tulsa Race Riot” not Massacre, only twice before and not in detail. White people didn’t talk about. We wern’t taught about it in Public School. I knew they played great jazz in Greenwood but that really was about it. I had no idea of the scope of evil and of the human suffering that had happened. When they plowed I-244 down the middle of Greenwood I had no idea of the signifigance of that action either as destroying old neighborhoods to build highways was normal in Tulsa.

I wish I would have known sooner.

This is my Lament.
