Sixty-four years after crowning its first star, the prestigious Ballon d'Or will not be awarded this year after the Coronavirus pandemic disrupted soccer this season.

Awarded by France Football magazine, there has been a men's Ballon d'or winner every year since Englishman Stanley Matthews in 1956. Lionel Messi has won it a record six times, one more than his longtime rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

But Ronaldo won't catch Messi this year, and neither Megan Rapinoe nor Ada Hegerberg will move ahead this time in the women's contest.

France Football's editor Pascal Ferre explained how it was a difficult but ultimately fair reasoning to cancel the award, given how truncated the season has been amid unprecedented circumstances.
