冬の雪国に伝わる民話といって、すぐに思い出されるのは、各地に伝わる「雪女」の話です。「雪女」の話というと、真っ先に思い出されるのは、ラフカディオ・ハーン(小泉八雲)の「怪談」に収録された有名な話です。舞台は開拓時代の北海道滝川である。雪の舞う夕方、色白の女が空知川の畔に立っていました。故郷の山形に恋人をおいて出稼ぎに来ていた若い男が、恋人に良く似たこの女に誘われるまま恋仲になってしまいます。

One of the folk tales of the winter snow country that is immediately remembered is the story of the "snow girl" that is transmitted in various places. The first thing that comes to mind when talking about "Snow Woman" is the famous story recorded in Lafcadio Hearn's "Kaidan". The stage is Takigawa, Hokkaido in the pioneering era. In the snowy evening, a fair-skinned woman was standing by the Sorachi River. A young man, who had a lover in his hometown Yamagata and came to work, falls in love while being invited by this woman who is very similar to her lover.
